Family Affair 1966 Uncle Bill meets Jody for the first time and Sissy for the first time in many years. This wonderful family oriented series which ran from 1966-1971 explored the trials of well-to-do civil engineer and bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith), as he attempted to raise his brother's orphaned children in his luxury New York City apartment. Davis's stuffy English butler Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot), also had adjustments to make as he was usually saddled with the responsibility of caring for 15-year-old Cissy (Kathy Garver) and the 6-year-old twins, Jody (Johnny Whitaker) and Buffy (Anissa Jones). Brian Keith was nominated for an Emmy three times for his role as Uncle Bill. On August 28, 1976, after partying all night at the beach town of Oceanside, California, Anissa Jones was found dead in the bedroom of a friend's house, she was only 18. The coroner's report listed her death as accidental drug overdose. Found in her system were cocaine, PCP, methaqualone and Seconal. The coroner who examined Jones reported that she had died from one of the most severe drug overdoses he had ever seen. In 1984, her brother, Paul Jones, also died of a drug overdose.

Anissa Jones Anissa Jones was the first of a long line of child stars from the television era whose life spiralled downward after her acting career had ended. Jones first acted in a cereal commercial at age six in 1964. At age eight, in 1966, Jones was cast as Elizabeth (Buffy) Patterson-Davis in the sitcom Family Affair. Part of Buffy's persona were the amusing conversations she had with her doll, Mrs. Beasley. Mrs. Beasley dolls became popular toys. (Jones' tightly curled pigtails inspired Cindy Brady's similar hairdo on The Brady Bunch.) Family Affair went off the air in 1971 when Jones was 13. Jones commented she was glad the series ended so she no longer had to carry the doll. Although Jones was offered a teenage role in The Brian Keith Show, she turned it down to unsuccessfully seek movie roles. (In contrast, Jones' Family Affair co-star Johnny Whitaker worked regularly on television and in Disney movies for many years.) Jones enrolled in high school but dropped out before graduating. Her parents' nasty divorce cause a rift in her family. At one point Jones was working in a donut shop. When she turned 18 she was able to access her $180,000 in Family Affair earnings from a trust fund. Later that same year, on August 28, 1976, Jones died of a drug overdose at a house party. The coroner claimed it was one of the most severe overdoses he had ever encountered. Jones' brother also died of an overdose in 1984.

Marian Mercer Passes at age 75 Marian Mercer, whose five-decade career also included dozens of television appearances, has died in California at age 75. Her husband, Patrick Hogan, tells the Los Angeles Times that Mercer died April 27 of Alzheimer's disease complications in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks, about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Besides her 1969 Broadway hit "Promises, Promises," Mercer won praise for the 1978 revival of "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off" co-starring Sammy Davis Jr. On television, she starred in the ABC-TV comedy "It's a Living" from 1980 to 1982. She also had roles on "St. Elsewhere," ''Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and "Love, American Style." Besides her husband of 31 years, Mercer is survived by a daughter, Deirdre Whitaker, of Seattle.
