"Kayleigh" I loved this song so much in high school that when I was desperately searching for a girl's name for my youngest child it was one of the first thoughts that I had. She was supposed to be "Bethany" but when another woman that had her baby a couple of weeks before me took that name I decided I couldn't use it anymore (Pregnancy hormones, I guess).

I heard the tail end of this song a couple of weeks ago and it's been driving me crazy ever since. It's hard to Google the answer so let's see who gets this one.

A few weeks ago I posted Jack Paar's mystery challenger appearance on What's My Line in 1960. Here is Jack's first attempt to stump the WML panel, on March 9, 1958.

Erich Kaestner, believed to be the last surviving German First World War veteran, died on January 1, 2008 at the age of 107. While other countries have held--or plan to hold--state funerals for their last serviceman from the Great War, Kaestner's death went almost unnoticed in Germany. Several weeks went by before the media was alerted by a Wikipedia update. Curiously, the German government does not keep official records of its WWI and WWII veterans. In Kaestner's later years he often received autograph requests from Americans. He never answered them.

A one hit wonder that was released in 1977 from artist Debbie Boone. It was huge when it was released. Ten entire weeks at the number one spot.
She did receive an award for the Best New Artist plus an AMA for Favorite Pop Single. She appeared on numerous programs due to the popularity of the tune.
It was produced by Joe Brooks for the film it was intended for. Brooks, he was the composer for his film, and was given a 1978 Grammy, and an Oscar for the radio hit. Actress Didi Conn was featured in the movie of the same name, but the song was sung by neither her or Debbie Boone.
Kinda strange.
Did you hear what happened to Joe in 2011?
A real shame that ain't worth repeating.

On Christmas Day 1977, Charlie Chaplin died at the age of 88 at his estate in Vevey, Switzerland. He was buried in a local cemetery. Sixty-eight days later, on March 3, 1978, Chaplin's coffin was disinterred by grave robbers. Shortly thereafter Chaplin's family began receiving calls from a man demanding $600,000 for the return of Chaplin's remains. Mrs. Chaplin had no intention of paying any ransom, but she kept in contact with the criminals so the police could hunt them down. Eventually they were nabbed 11 weeks after the crime. The culprits had reburied Chaplin's coffin in a corn field. Chaplin's coffin was reinterred in its original burial place--under six feet of concrete to deter further grave-robbing attempts. The criminals, recent refugees from eastern Europe, were convicted of 'disturbing the peace of the dead.'

Earlier I posted the Sports Illustrated cover photo of 16-year-old Laurence Owen. Here she is winning the 1961 U.S. championship in Colorado Springs on January 25, 1961--three weeks before she (and the rest of the U.S. team) were killed in a plane crash in Belgium. This was the first time the U.S. Figure Skating Championships were broadcast on network television. (Miss Owen's first name is misspelled on the TV graphic.) Yes, that is the familiar voice of Dick Button providing the commentary--back in 1961!

Naomi alerted me to this terrific video a couple of weeks ago. It's too good not to share with everyone. At 8 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2009, this joyful, creative stunt was staged at Antwerp, Belgium's Central Station. It was designed to publicize a cast search for The Sound of Music. Watch as dozens of dancers (in regular street clothes) emerge from the crowd and begin their surprise show! This is really uplifting. I wish I had been there!

Tighten Up LIVE - 1967 Tighten Up by Archie Bell was recorded during the time when Bell was drafted into the Army to serve in Vietnam. While on a short leave, he recorded the single "Tighten It Up" with musical backing by The TSU Tornadoes. Issued in December 1967, "Tighten It Up" became a huge hit in Houston and was picked up for distribution by New York-based Atlantic Records. "Tighten Up," written by Bell and Billy Butler sold more than three million copies, holding both the #1 R&B and the #1 Pop spot for two weeks on Billboard's charts in spring 1968. The Tighten Up LP hit #15 R&B and #142 Pop in summer 1968. Unfortunately, Bell was stationed in Germany while all of this was happening.
