Swiss Spaghetti Trees 1957 April 1 In this b&w clip, first broadcast on BBC Panorama on 1st April 1957, a very young Richard Dimbleby revealed the wonderful world of Swiss spaghetti production to millions of deprived and hungry post-war Brits. (did I hear someone say...do it to me one more time???)-The spaghetti tree is a fictitious tree and the subject of a 3-minute spoof report on the Swiss spaghetti harvest beside Lake Lugano broadcast by the BBC current affairs programme Panorama. -The report was first produced as an April Fools' Day joke in 1957, reporting on the bumper spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, resulting from the mild winter and "virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil." ... Do You remember that??? I don't remember this, but after seeing this today, My kids will never forget it or what I gave them to plant on this day 2009! Their very own Spaghetti Tree!!

Theme Building LAX This is the famous "Theme Building" at the Los Angeles International Airport. This restaurant was designed in the early 1960's, when L.A. was still new and hope for the future abounded. Everyone thought the future would be just like "The Jetsons". The building was recently refurbished, and now the interior is intentionally retro-60's.

Springhill Mining Disaster 1958 One of the first major 'ongoing' news stories to be covered live on television was the coal mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada on October 23, 1958. That night 174 miners were trapped 13,000 feet below ground when a 'bump' caused a huge section of the mine to collapse. It was the third major disaster at the mine since 1891. Exactly 100 miners were rescued; some were trapped for five days before being saved. The bodies of the other 74 were all eventually recovered. Because of the heat at that depth, many of the corpses had badly decomposed by the time they were found. The mine never reopened.

Randix 57 Chevy AM FM Radio Cassette Here is a '57 Chevy AM/FM radio/cassette player from the '80's. The front hood opens to insert the cassette and the rear trunk opens to hold the batteries and AC cord. The headlights are the speakers, the windshield is the carrying handle and the antenna is, well, the antenna. The front driving lights light up when the unit is on. The front license plate says "RANDIX '57 Chevy." It was marketed by the RANDIX Co. but was manufactured in China! (It's probably been giving out melamine rays all these years!) I actually bought this at a Toys "R" Us. For those of you who watch reruns of "Home Improvement," you might have noticed one of these sitting on the shelf of the "Tool Time" set. (One of my favorite shows.)

Career Academy Reel to Reel Tape Machine This is a small, portable reel to reel tape recorder that was made in Japan for the "Career Academy School of Famous Broadcasters." I attended that Academy in Milwaukee, Wisconsin back in 1969. These tape recorders were offered to students so that we had something on which to practice our "announcer voice" while we were not in class. It could handle 5" or smaller reels. It still works. At the time I attended the school two rather famous people were sponsors of it. Broadcaster, author and lecturer Robert St. John, and NBA star Kareem Abdul Jabbar, (of course, back then in 1969 he was known as Lew Alcindor, and played for the Milwaukee Bucks.) I got to meet both of these gentlemen. Mr. St. John was actually the author of the textbook we used. I became a radio broadcaster… but never a famous one. :-( This was back in the days when you could lose your broadcasting license and even your job for saying ‘hell’ or ‘damn’ over the air. Somewhere along the way the FCC has curled up and died!

KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER Opening Network series that ran from 1974-1975. Carl Kolchak, played so well by Darren McGavin, was a reporter for Chicago's Independent News Service, and a magnet for situations involving the supernatural. He turned his investigative skills to vampires, werewolves, zombies and all kinds of legendary creatures, but in the end he always failed to convince his skeptical editor, Tony Vincenzo, played by Simon Oakland, that the stories weren't just products of his own overworked imagination. I was so faithful to this show, and was so disappointed when they cancelled it.
