Ebbets Field Perhaps the most nostalgic ballpark of them all was Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, home of the National League's Dodgers for 45 seasons. Built in 1913, it was one of the era's new concrete and steel stadiums. It held 32,000 of baseball's most loyal and colorful supporters. Brooklyn fans witnessed some of the worst baseball ever played in the National League--and some of the very best. Despite consistently strong fan support since 1890, after the 1957 season owner Walter O'Malley ripped the heart out of the borough by uprooting the Dodgers and moving the club 3,000 miles away to Los Angeles. Most Brooklynites would have preferred seeing the Brooklyn Bridge dismantled rather than lose their beloved baseball club.

Walter Cronkite reporting of UFOs Prompted by Lava's posting of Amelia Earhart, UFOs have pretty much been regularly in the news since at least the 1950s. Do You Believe?

Room 222 Promo remember this show? . . . the series focused on an American History class at Walt Whitman High School in Los Angeles, though it also covered other events at the school. The class, Room 222, was taught by Pete Dixon (Lloyd Haynes), an idealistic African-American teacher. Other characters featured in the show were guidance counselor Liz McIntyre (Denise Nicholas), who was also Pete's girlfriend; the principal, Seymour Kaufman (Michael Constantine) and fidgety, somewhat "wacky" Alice Johnson (Karen Valentine) as a student teacher. . . Cliffy posted a clip of this in color, but i like this one too, in black and white and with Dudley Doright!!

Walter Johnson One of my all-time favorite baseball players: Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators. The scouting report on Johnson's blazing fastball noted, 'You can't hit what you can't see.' Once Johnson pitched three complete-game shutouts in a single weekend. For years his lifetime total of 3,508 strikeouts seemed insurmountable. Johnson retired in 1927. It took nearly 50 years for another pitcher to reach 3,000 strikeouts. Johnson became a beloved baseball figure--largely because he had the misfortune to spend his entire career with the lowly Senators. In 1924, when Johnson finally got to pitch in a World Series at age 36, the public rejoiced when he won the seventh and decisive game to give Washington its only World Series triumph.

America Comes of Age Where Dreams are Born t has been called the great American Pastime. From sand lots to vacant lots, there isn't a young boy ... or girl, for that matter, that hasn't had the dream. The dream of being up to bat, in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and "touching them all" to the deafening roar of the crowd. Baseball is truly as American as Apple Pie and the Fourth of July. Where Dreams are Born is a journey back .. To when legendary ballplayers were mere mortals .. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Bucky Harris, and Walter Johnson. The 1924/25 major league season. April 18 1906 The Day the Hills Trembled At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906 The San Francisco Bay area erupted as the earth unleashed her fury. The violent shocks punctuated the strong shaking which lasting nearly 60 seconds. The quake was felt from southern Oregon to south of Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada. The ground had ripped open for more than 270 miles along a great fault - the San Andreas rift. The quake lasted only a minute but caused the one of the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. The damages were estimated at $400,000,000 in 1906 dollars, That would translate to nearly 10 billion dollars today. Photos The Library of Congress J. B.
