I love this program for two reasons: First, it's simply beautiful. Second, it's from one of my favorite sports events in history--the 1939 Rose Bowl game. Going into the game, Duke University had won every one of its football games in 1938 by shutout. They led USC 3-0 until the final minute when the Trojans got a late touchdown and won 7-3. How heartbreaking would that loss have been?

The most talked about play in NFL history was the 'Immaculate Reception' in a 1972 Steelers-Raiders playoff game. Franco Harris caught a last-minute touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw. Under 1972 NFL rules, an offensive player could not legally catch a forward pass that had been last touched by a teammate. To this day a debate rages about who last touched the ball before Harris. Was it Jack Tatum of the Oakland Raiders or Frenchy Fuqua of the Pittsburgh Steelers? Judge for yourself.

O.J. Simpson of the USC Trojans scores on a 64-yard touchdown run versus UCLA in their 1967 meeting. Gee, whatever became of him?

Popular folklore says that if an athlete or team appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated, something negative often happens to the subject shortly thereafter. The alleged SI 'cover jinx' began with this November 18, 1957 issue. It proclaimed the University of Oklahoma's football team--a squad that was riding a fantastic 47-game winning streak--was unbeatable. Guess what happened in their next game? Notre Dame scored a late touchdown to upset Oklahoma 28-21.

It was the wildest play in the history of college football. (Okay, it was the wildest play in the history of sports!) On November 20, 1982, on the final play of the Cal-Stanford game, the Golden Bears improvise their way to a touchdown through the Stanford defense--and the school's marching band!

December 12, 1965 was a pretty good day for rookie Chicago Bears runningback Gale Sayers. He scored six touchdowns!
