'I never called one wrong!' Bill Klem once immodestly told a reporter. Klem is still widely regarded as baseball's greatest umpire nearly 70 years after he last worked a game. He was a National League arbiter from 1906 through 1941. The innovative Klem (pictured here in 1914) was the first umpire to wear an inside chest protector and the first to use hand signals to keep fans and players informed about his calls. (Klem said, 'The fan in the 25-cent bleacher seat has just as much right to know what I called as the fan in the box seat near home plate.') Klem was so skilled at calling balls and strikes that he only worked behind the plate for a number of years. He worked 18 World Series--a record that will never be broken because MLB now uses a rotation system rather than a merit system to assign umpires to post-season games. Klem was affectionately called 'The Old Arbitrator'--a nickname he adored. The jowly and thick-lipped Klem hated the nickname 'Catfish.' Any player who addressed him that way was quickly ejected. He had a strange relationship with New York Giants' manager John McGraw. Off the field the two were good friends; on the field they feuded bitterly. My favorite Bill Klem story: In 1941, while working the bases, he called a runner out on a tag play at second base. The runner angrily insisted the tag had missed him. Klem informed the irate player, 'I thought you were out.' Then the realization hit him: For the first time in his long career Klem only thought a player was out--he wasn't certain. Klem resigned the next day.

Cass Elliot was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on Sept 19th 1941. Her restauranteur father nicknamed her'Cass' after the Trojan princess, Cassandra. She adopted the name Cass Elliot during her teens. The name Mama Cass evolved from her involvement with the Mamas and Papas.
This is what John Phillips said about Cass in an interview in August 1995 at Paramount Studios: "Her father had a deli in New York. I remember her as a little, chubby girl, with the stained apron on, behind the counter. [Laughs] We were sort of infamous in that area, and when she got to New York, she knew who we were, but we didn't know who she was. And she had met Denny, and Denny said, "I know this girl that sings wonderfully. We should have her over and sing with her." It happened to be that LSD was actually legal at the time. It wasn't a banned drug or anything. We searched all over the Village and found some contemporary artist who had some and he gave it to us. We were about to take it that night, when the knock on the door came and Cass came in. So we all had it together the same night, for the first time, and I think that formed a bond between the four of us that we just never stopped singing. We just went on and on and on and on, until the trip wore off, which was about four years later."
Cass Elliott died July 29, 1974. Contrary to what many people have been led to believe over the years, she did not choke on a sandwich. According to her doctor, the cause was heart failure.

For a short time during the early 1940s, Lake was considered one of the most reliable box office draws in Hollywood and was also known for her onscreen pairings with actor Alan Ladd. At first, the couple was teamed together merely out of physical necessity: Alan Ladd was just 5 feet 5 inches tall and the only actress then on the Paramount lot short enough to pair with him was Veronica, who stood just 4 feet 11½ inches. They made four films together: THIS GUN FOR HIRE, THE GLASS KEY, THE BLUE DAHLIA, and SAIGON. . i love this black and white photo of them!

I just read a new twist on an old trick. This time they are using a Mystery Shopper ploy. Here is how they go:
You receive a check in the mail, often times a cashier's check that looks very real. It is always made out for a large amount, they tell you to cash it and send the difference back to them. The problem is the check will bounce, you will be liable for the money and penalties and you just mailed real money to the crooks. In this case they are send out $4,000 checks, telling you to spend $600 on start up expenses and a few test purchases. When you fill out the paperwork on this test you are to send them the $3,400 to them to see if you qualify as a mystery shopper.

Born Sofia Villani Scicolone, in Rome Italy on September 20, 1934. An illegitimate child from a poor home in Naples, she became a teenage beauty queen and model. Her film debut was as an extra. She came under contract to film producer Carlo Ponti, later her husband, and blossomed as an actress. An international career followed and she won an Oscar for La Ciociara, (1961, translation Two Women). Frequently appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, her many films include The Millionairess (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964). In 1979 she published Sophia Loren: Living and Loving (with A E Hotchner) which was filmed for television as Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980), in which she played herself and her mother. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991.
How she stays so gorgeous is anyone's guess, but being Sicilian myself, I would be willing to bet there's something in the olive oil, no kidding. In any case, I better get me a few barrels of it lol

yes, i'm on a kick! i just love the glamour shots of (esp) the 40's and 50's . . . here is Dorothy Malone. I was wondering what i had seen her in . . yes, she won an Oscar for WRITTEN ON THE WIND in 1956 which also starred Lauren Bacall, Rock Hudson and Robert Stack. But, i remember her as Constance MacKenzie on the ABC primetime serial PEYTON PLACE, on which she starred from 1964 through 1968.

Bewitching Elizabeth Montgomery was the daughter of silver-screen actor Robert Montgomery, and got her start on his TV show ROBERT MONTGOMERY PRESENTS. After marrying second husband Gig Young in 1956, Montgomery shied away from films but made numerous appearances on popular TV shows. Upon their 1963 divorce, Montgomery returned to making films, but third husband William Asher cast her as "Samantha" on the 1964-72 ABC-TV series BEWITCHED. If you look fast, you can see her in a cameo role in the 1965 beach party flick HOW TO STUFF A WILD BIKINI, at the end of the film. After ending BEWITCHED, Asher and Montgomery divorced; she then went on to make many TV movies and married her sometime costar, Robert Foxworth. Sadly, Montgomery passed away at the age of 62 in 1995...this early glamour shot of "Sam" blows me away . . not the way i am used to seeing her!

Often cited as one of the great comedies of its time, the film version won critical acclaim and became the biggest US box office hit in the summer of 1955. It contains one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century in which Marilyn Monroe's dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on. A famous quote, "Isn't it delicious?" has originated from this scene and was even posed as a question on the game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and a bit more TRIVIA ~ both Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau were considered for the part of the middle-aged husband, tempted by his sexy, blonde neighbor . . . . . .

During the Second World War, the U.S. government produced a series of anti-Japanese propaganda posters featuring a caricature dubbed the Tokio Kid. (Tokio was a common spelling of Tokyo at the time.) These posters, featuring absurd exaggerations of Asian facial features and pidgin English, warned Americans that wasteful habits and slacking off on the job could aid the enemy.

Alice Ghostley, the Tony Award-winning actress best known on television for playing Esmeralda on "Bewitched" and Bernice on "Designing Women," has died. She was 81.
Ghostley died Friday at her home in Studio City after a long battle with colon cancer and a series of strokes, longtime friend Jim Pinkston said.
