December 1978: California Suite - Commercial Preview The 17th of December from that year. Do you remember that? How many recall four stories wrapped-up into one? I do. And you? A group of guests have something in common. They've all travelled to a certain vacation spot. Though, it will get kinda unexpectedly zany after a short while on their seemingly perfect stay to a vacation hotel. Like comedies and sight-gags? Well, this is it. Is it for you? Specifically, I really enjoyed the performers. My initial reaction was on Christmas Day then. I recognized them all easily. Just to sit and see how incessantly a shot play can become a part of me, all thanks to Simon. A guy that I would embrace if I had a chance. The variety of people are primarily there to make sure this doesn't become a bad mess, which tends to happen without good timing and bad directions. But in this case, it never happened, due to the fact of cool personalities with a real sense of fun and humor. Staying at a hotel never looked like this? How did they all get along? *E*

King Kong: Theatrically Showcased December 1976 Remember December of '76? The 17th? Chances are, you couldn't open a newspaper without seeing the excessive print advertising in numerous papers. Want to get exceptionally technical? How can I document the era without? Well, the attempt of over-expressed hype with a contemporary 40 foot high simian was put to the test with a challenging expedition. Remember, everyone came out to see him fall down. Too many! It sort of got dangerous with the crowd. As mentioned already, remember the advertising. It never matched the pose of the beastly gorilla. What happened? Did you have an experience then in NYC with it then? Remember the huge publicity that had started a year prior to it? Did you know it was taken in on a Hawaiian island. Remember the puzzles and Seven-Eleven cups, or the recreated posters that were synonymous with outlandish hype. Helicopters appeared instead of jets?! They had lost the jets in the long process. Totally disappeared from sight? Though, it was still brought together with a huge scale with the updated story. The hype, it was hard to avoid then. Magazines, newspapers, bubblegum. Anything possible was printed up. Most of the hype consisted of sixty-one tons of metal in total weight. Sure, it could of gone wrong with the animosity being created by someone behind the lens and the publicity that was connected to it. Mean and occasional confrontational towards others were the rumors. So many personalities were being protected by Dino then. Mister D. could express himself easily with the vivid project. So, how do you create a trans-formative idea into an event for Christmas, while under pressure for a specific date? Holding to patience and budget and keeping the name in the news. Perceptions were made strong for the life-like beast with the constant push of hype. We all knew the errors that were made with whispers in the cinema. It just didn't match-up. What happened? But with most of the kids, they don't care what they saw. Then, there were many big inconsistencies along the way. Especially during the months leading up to the day. Drawings, sculpture's were far-fetched from its final visual presentation that cost over a million, all constructed by an Italian for Mr. D. He would later work again for the man, but this time with another white animal. With the work put in weekly then, 31,000 in hydraulic hose and 4,500 in electrical wires looked like it did cost a lot of money. The workshop must've been busy for months. It was. Did you know the beast had an arm span of 20 feet! His arms and hands were able to move in 16 positions. Remember the waterfall part? A real high-tech deal then. It was urgent that they hurried on it for the coming December. The date had already been placed - an entire year away in newspapers. Did you know, the huge furry creation was created to walk and turn - but we all know how that turned out. Fabricated lies. The motion was not good. Too mechanical. His still eyes and open mouth were supposed to be close-to-life as the complex hydraulic valves were pressed and pulled. It is funny, little was said of who was actually being shot for closeups and long shots. A secret kept for months. Nobody really knew what to expect, when actually it was an innovative electrical-wired-mask that was made for an actual makeup man. The gorilla costumed now actor was actually ignored many times during the days they were working. The man nowadays, he is a big deal in recent years. Know him? Who is he? You should know. It had to be sweaty under all that. Then, at the time, it was very constraining to be dealt in that way. To be ignored, left in a corner - alone. Alienated. There’s more to this thing than you could imagine. Hard to just rip it away. But then, it was all new. Unlike the renowned 30's one. Too different. That was the appeal as it eventually came off more like a homage. The secret to the big and tall balanced figure was - well-made proportionally hydraulic valves, as they were assembled together using wires running to a crane by a control system run by six operators. It looked dangerous when set-up for balancing. Did you know that 4,000 pounds of horse tails from Argentina were added to the exterior of its appearance. Four kinds of netting contributed in months of preparation, all by securing into panels individually; then glued on a plastic mold - entirely covering the frame of the metal underneath meticulously. A lot of patience for the end result. Once organized, a huge cost to build the furry machine. The funny, almost absurd thing is, it didn't look real. Robotic and unnatural. You could see, once put together, it was only seen for a few mere seconds. A glimpse? That was it. Seconds? All that work and money for a $1.7 moment. Of course, the rest was done with award winning, groundbreaking blue screen technology with the fearsome suit added in. But did you know, it recovered its 24 million budget -by three times! True. I assume, some of that came from the wide merchandising too. Remember View-Master? The proof is in the pudding, despite the best efforts then with going to Hawaii and NYC for weeks. Now, just maybe, you have a totally different opinion on it. I can understand. Did you know that Jess, she went off to learn more on her craft on performing, including photography. She wasn't clueless with the unique virtue she had placed then. Also, I thought she had done a great job with the big primate. Then again, I do pay full attention to details with trying to explain it all smoothly. I suppose you realize this now. Did you ever catch the second part to the story in the mid-80s? I walked out of it. Boy, talk about being short-lived. That was one thing that hype could not buy. A dull story. As usual, there just wasn't enough of it. Too bad. They had missed the mark on it. *E*

Supertramp: Take The Long Way Home (1979) One of the most known memories for many from that era was from the United Kingdom. It was never mistaken at being what it is. Memorable. This was thanks to a group of brass instruments and a piano at times. We all knew them. Did you know they had a very uncool name to themselves. True. Long before settling on what we all know today. Funny enough, they really weren't deemed at being big in that period, compared to other parts of the world. Only in the United Kingdom and Canada where they garnered a bigger response. Still, I remember them commonly on the radio then. Remember the those summer months of '79? Together, they had actually started out in the the later half of the 1960s, getting cash backed-up from a Dutchman they knew. He was their hope at the time. They even played around with their name too. Eventually settling on a what we know today. Actually, they were inspired by a book of someone very famous from years prior. Ever heard of William Henry Davies? He took away the cheesy name they almost settled on. About the recognized melody, it was actually thought of before the members had agreed to partner-up together with Roger. He had been much younger when he put it down for himself. Actually, more than ten years prior to what was eventually brought out. From the mid 70's, the men, they became more and more stronger as a unit together, especially with the sounds of a harpsichord mixed with a clarinet and the cool trombone. It set them apart from others at the time, providing them with what they really wanted. Can you think of any other now that you could compare them with? Together, they were individuals, who in numerous ways would be remembered for something that would become tirelessly great. Fact, there was a time when they couldn't be productive at all. You could laugh now, as in the Eighties, they were seriously known as being well-known around the world. Genuinely cool. It started with Crime of the Century, brought to us in 09/74. It could be said, they could've been overwhelmed by the explosion of hype around them. Luckily, this did not happen. How many do remember that? You? This wasn't disposable nonsense. They were inventive. But so were many others were at the time. They even brought themselves over to America to live in the country that eventually recognized them. It sounded too good to be true. They had made it. *E*

1964: Fly Me to the Moon: Frank Sinatra and Count Basie Did you know when it comes to a standard, I can't forget it. Just like you. Do you know about Bart Howard? A long-time writer from the past. It was his idea that really gave him a lift then. Especially in a few cabarets where it was basically heard at first. I don't think I have ever been to one of those places. Have you? Mister Howard eventually saw that things eventually changed with his composition being a success for himself. It lasted for years. Do you know that the man had an entire list of titles (49) that broke things open for him. This is what happens when you know how to get exposure with a lot of luck and efforts. Easier then (perhaps?) Originally, it was first heard way back in '54 in NYC. That must've been a fun time to be there. We know that. A lot of brilliant ideas were being signed with those you may know. Since then, it has become known across the country. The writer, he had chosen his words carefully, as it was once called "In Other Words". Did you know that Bart, he was getting his name across with his seperate works to the right people. Within a short time, the '54 number was redone by Frank in the seventh year of that decade. This was a time when Frank was getting a new start, revamping himself, as he was fallin' out from the rest who were rising over him, on a whole different level when compared to him. He just wasn't fitting in with trends, and was in danger of losing it all as others were more modern and "with it". In no time though, he accomplished a new rise with winning a golden man for a flick he was seen in at the time. Know it? Of course, things were not always good behind the doors. It's just the way things are for those who do that sort of thing. Now, he was rediscovered by more than women, all thanks to a lot of great chances to prove himself again. Show after show really did it for him. Remember? By the way, when it comes to the ambitious tune, people were really paying attention, as it was their second go together at it. It did well for both, especially with widening their social circle with close-ties along their way. The sparks were flying then for both with their careers on the move. It couldn't be avoided as both were eager with their creative efforts. They were then sure bets, and both hard to avoid with catching ears with a slew of invites around the world. They enjoyed each other too well, and could be seen together over the years doing significant work that hardened their partnership. On Basie, he was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, and is best remembered for the banner influential work he set in our culture throughout his lifetime. *E*

Count On Me: Jefferson Starship (1978) Forget about everything you might not know. Forget about everything. Go stick your earphones in and slide your seat up. Now disparate problems that have nothing to do with you. Fight back at that and just think. Think back to another time. And, of course, if that sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Sorry. But, just like most good things in life, there is no detour to always thinking back to a better day. Let me bring somebody to the light now. Cofused? No need for it. Shown is one guy who you gotta know. He held himself up for a few years, then dropped out only to return. Reasons? There were many in-fights that could last for hours or even years. Take about messy. Together, they just couldn't keep things together as a unit. A lot of changes took place with members leaving. Nobody could get along with the difference of personalities. Trying to hold it all together was difficult then. How true. Recall Marty? That's right, the guy with the moustache. Mr. Balin was just trying to contribute in his own way. He did his best, as he was always talking spiritualism. He didn't let things stop him though. Man, he had been with them since the 60s! As some of you may know, he went on to other projects that he loves. Did you know he lives near Tampa, Florida. It goes without saying, you can remember those days you lived back then. It is natural to remember the time when you were hardly ever home. Given a choice, I bet you would've chosen to stay like that, in say the year being stated now. Addressing the time now, they carried a lot of happiness for people. I bet you had a few favorite days and nites when you went to the vinyl stores on another shopping spree. Disposable coins on March 11th of that year. When it went up the respected list. Hard to forget. All you wanted to do was get home and let it be heard. You may know them well, but do you remember the then ongoing years of these individuals? Most disappointingly, there were a lot of problems keeping them together. If it sounded too good, well it just isn't going to last. Problems instill more problems, as things always broke down for them, as their front man wasn't ready to give all his time to them. That would change later on for the better. You know, Marty, he is also a painter and can still be be often seen with those close to him on a stage even now. Definite cool. Opening the jacket up and ... you get the picture. Once it was opened, it stayed on the turntable for weeks. *E*

1932 NFL Championship Game One of the most important games in the history of the National Football League was the 1932 NFL Championship Game. It provided many firsts: Most significantly it was the NFL's first championship game--and it was the first NFL game to be played indoors. Prior to 1933 there was no official league championship game. The league title went to the team with the best record--which was often disputed because teams did not play anything resembling a balanced schedule. In 1932, both the Chicago Bears and Portsmouth (OH) Spartans had six wins and a loss. By rule, tie games were ignored in the standings. Portsmouth had four ties and the Bears had six! During the regular season, both games between the Bears and Spartans had ended in ties. With the NFL's blessings, the Bears and Spartans agreed to play a one-game tie-breaker at Chicago's Wrigley Field on December 18. However, a forecast of a blizzard and minus-40-degree temperatures prompted the game to be moved indoors to Chicago Stadium, an arena more suited for hockey than football. Dirt from a recent circus was spread on the arena's concrete floor to form somethin akin to a regular gridiron. The cozy confines forced some playing rules to be revised. Because there were only 80 yards between the goal lines, as soon as a team advanced the ball beyond midfield, it was moved back 20 yards! The goalposts were moved from the endline to the goal line (where they stayed until 1974). Also, because the field was ten yards narrower than usual, before every play from scrimmage the ball was placed between hashmarks ten yards from the sideline. Chicago won the game 9-0, all their points coming in the fourth quarter on a controversial forward-pass touchdown and a safety. (The touchdown play caused the NFL's passing rules to be modernized the following season.) Not long afterward the Spartans moved to Detroit and became the Lions. The game was a huge success and inspired the NFL to split itself into two divisions and hold an annual championship game between the divisional champs. That system determined the NFL champion each year until the Super Bowl era began in 1966.

Strawberry Letter Number 23: The Brothers Johnson (1977) Remember what was happening in the year stated? Sure you do. Now, don't get me wrong on it, I know it is long ago. Ever had a conversation about it? Did you know that it was really inspired from a fruit-scented note that had been written for someone close to the original reclusive writer/instrument player. True. Who was he, the writer? Heard of him? Well, it was a guy named Shuggie Otis. For years, I had been previously unaware of the fact until a New Year's Eve conversation about the string player. As the story goes, he had no idea that by the time it was redone and finished, it would be as big as his own modest self. Down the five years, it worked out just fine for him. But, it really could of launched his budding career. His fortunes could of changed for himself for much of his life. But, Otis did seem content with it. Even though, as I said, he could never of anticipated it. It was just a love letter that spawned it. A relationship that went from one to another. All in all, it was particularly useful for him in the long run of things, as he was just a teenager when he put down his own feelings about it to a girl. He must of realized soon enough that he could draw a lot from it($). I bet, to his surprise, he had became the winning element when the original was reworked into something cooler by a few top-people who cleverly knew that were on to something. Resulting into something that fared better than the 1st try that he had made in the early '70s. Seems that the writer (Otis) had a female cousin, and because of this, one of the brothers came across the vinyl effort by accident by dating her. This is how a 2nd chance can come back around with a little more of an effort with a new idea added, and not being obliged to be faithful to the 1st source. There was a lot of accompaniment on the 2nd try. Do you know who was on it? It was a different sound altogether. Due to this, it made its way into our lives because of those involved. Even today, look no further, it is immensely enjoyable still. On the brothers, Louis and George, their association with Mister Jones was a welcomed chance to get them known around the world, thanks to his cousin. And now with particularly heading to Japan, QJ gave them the consistency that others would beg for then. As years went on, they experimented with other genres that would separate them all from their earlier days, especially with such things as church music. However, they would really not repeat back what they had done previously. Only choosing to go another way. By the late eighties, they had left due to more contemporary trends that were appearing. *E*

Dexys Midnight Runners: Come On Eileen (1982) Storytime continues: Anyone here or there looking for that Kevin (the lead) to follow through on his big one from then will have to wait a lot longer. What was he waiting for! Seems that just recently, he had tried it all over again. It didn't work out. Too much time had passed by for a 2nd chance. And topping it all off, he had made a series of mistakes that were a real loss for himself. Did you know that "Dexy" (the word) is what was known as a pill used for diet purposes, out of a once evidenced way of life that was known as the "Northern Soul Style". This was from the decade before the 70's. The 1960's. Did you know about that? Then, it was all too common for a community of people in that area to get their kicks from it. It was usually in clubs and on the streets for that sort of thing. It was all tough, living a tough to get by dire Birmingham, England. That was the reality in the later part of the Seventies, as these few managed change by waiting for a form of fate to intervene. To have something going for themselves collectively as a apparent group waiting for a chance. But, the only thing they really had was motivation from Kevin at that time, and a theater picture that made them find themselves with a proper look for people who would believe in them. Also, they were caught up in their own countries soul scene from the then 1960's. And with that, they had received a lot of positive feedback for their unique wardrobe, which was inspired by the picture called "Mean Streets". I had to think about that one. So after some time, a few them with Kevin had enough of the pressure to follow up with something new. This was because, they had no say on what they should do. In other words, nobody was listening to what direction to take from Kevin. Kevin had a difficult time with it. All were on opposite sides, but at some point, it was suggested, back in early '82 to change to an Ireland-inspired folk, gypsy and soul, all scruff appearance. It worked. It was unlike anything then. It seemed to have worked immediately. But as we have come to observe, the breaking point was about to come. Some of them were too overwhelmed with it and left. Matching that again would pass by. The opportunity was just not there for them, even though they tried a few years back with a few other newbies. One mistake could be said, changing themselves repeatedly wasn't really what they wanted to do. Their clothing, they became like a fashion show. As told, Kevin had missed his chance with a loss of confidence among other things. These were the most important factors to all of it. *E*

Eddie Money: Baby Hold On (1977-1978) Where do I start? There is no mistaking him. Too much of a good thing back then? Ever put a thought of any kind to him? Early on, it had the wrong effect on him [success]. He waited around till the Eighties to continue where he had left off. But something was missing from his previous days. Still, he was able to keep himself working with consistency. Some good. Some not so good [years]. He never stopped. But there were many challenges along the way. One was regarding to styles. Styles that were changing as fast as today's. It was of concern to not only him. It was not what you would want at the time. An unwanted holiday. Hard to match his previous years. Early in his life in NYC, he spent his time being a cadet. A cadet that couldn't help himself. He was unable to stop from doing things that just were too out of the ordinary for a professional. Still, he felt something with his desires to be interacting on a stage, instead of being over powered with the wrong career move. He tried to see another side to what his parents wanted him to do. Being an ambitious officer. But the effect of having spent time on the other side was more appealing than that profession being talked of now. Pursuing his dream was largely what he wanted. His parents were trying to ignore what he really wanted. But they failed once he grew his hair. Besides, he had never seen or heard of such disregard for those that were long-term, working for NYC, trying to enforce regulations on those that opposed the uniform. He never got it during that period in his life. To have a continuous job that some of the public didn't respect. He never demonstrated the willingness for it. The reality is, he would lead himself over to the west coast of California, where he would become a name in no time. But due to extreme excess, he always came up short till the early '90s. This is when he reemerged again for a short time, only to be swiped away due to the arrival of new trends. It wasn't preventable with most that followed that time. Turns out, this is how it is. You and I know it. In '80 it was common knowledge, he had a serious body cramming, failing miserably with a chemical intake by accident. I don't think something like that was done out of spite. But due to it, it caused him to bend down, hunched over, for over ten hours in a very difficult position. In truth, it really cramped his lower leg. It would be some time, as he was in no condition to manage. A short time later though, I was surprised to see him with a cane. He got himself up, literally holding the walking stick in place, waking up after that bad experience with a lot of things to think of then. After all, it did bodily harm to him, as well at that time. He made it on himself to clean himself up, which he did, with a full recovery. He just wanted to get back what he had. As a result of his determination, he has remained consistent since then. Getting back to the way his friend Bill would have wanted. After all, it was Bill who had lent his hand. Remember Bill? *E*
