KO Magazine KO Magazine ('The Knockout Boxing Magazine,' as it was billed) was a boxing publication that at one time rivalled The Ring, the longtime stately 'Bible of Boxing,' for readership. It first appeared in 1980 as a monthly publication when pro boxing was experiencing a renaissance. KO quickly captured the attention of boxing fans with its well written stories, lengthy interviews--and especially its color centerfolds of prominent fighters. Its annual award issue was often filled with laugh-provoking absurdities. (One such kudo targetting TV's irritating boxing announcers was the Howard Cosell Talks A Lot But Says Nothing Award. The shortest TV fight of the year was given the Don't Get Up To Get A Beer Award.) Steve Farhood, who now writes excellent boxing pieces for Sports Illustrated, got his start at KO. KO eventually became a victim of boxing's declining popularity. It was eventually acquired by The Ring and absorbed into the latter. The last distinct issue of KO was published in 2006. Heavyweight champion Larry Holmes is shown on the cover of this issue from 1982.

The 51st State of America-Jefferson--almost In October 1941, the mayor of Port Orford, Oregon, Gilbert Gable, announced that the Oregon counties of Curry, Josephine, Jackson, and Klamath should join with the California counties of Del Norte, Siskiyou, and Modoc to form a new state, later named Jefferson. The first blow was the death of Mayor Gable on December 2, followed five days later by the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7. Secessionists focused their efforts on the war effort, which crippled the movement

Bananadine Hoax 1967 Bananadine is a fictional psychoactive substance which is supposedly extracted from banana peels. A hoax recipe for its extraction from banana peels was originally published in the Berkeley Barb in March 1967. It became more widely known when William Powell, believing it to be true, reproduced the method in The Anarchist Cookbook in 1970. The original hoax was designed to raise questions about the ethics of making psychoactive drugs illegal and prosecuting those who took them: 'What if the common banana contained psychoactive properties, how would the government react?" One book of one-liner joke comics, published in 1971, contained a comic in which a teen is secretly handing bunches of bananas to a zoo gorilla at night, uttering the line, 'Just throw the skins back, man!' Researchers at New York University have found that banana peel contains no intoxicating chemicals, and that smoking it produces only a placebo effect. Over the years, there has been considerable speculation regarding the psychoactive properties of banana skins. Donovan's hit single Mellow Yellow was released a few months prior to the Berkeley Barb article, and in the popular culture of the era, the song was assumed to be about smoking banana peels. Shortly after the 'Berkeley Barb' and the song, bananadine was featured in the New York Times.

Eric Burdon and The Animals: Sky Pilot {1968} You have heard many combative stories before, and perhaps a few articles concerning this all very important subject, which became entirely clear by the end of its message. Back in the late 1960s, Eric and his wild pals were referred to the war of that time, but in parts. For them, it was a bold message that required more time to evidently tell. All in all, it did provide the framework to what had started back then, the great casualties that occurred, and those that showed up for service for their country. They had the world ahead of themselves. It seemed so headstrong, as in a short break, it flew up to fourteen, as it had appeared on the air with a growth of success thanks to the young Englishman and the five others behind him. Also, it should be said, the Newcastle upon Tyne boys had many personal issues together, most which occurred in the '60s. Those issues broke some of them apart, as many came and went over the course of time together. Everything that came with it may of been too much for the boys. A revolving door had started. Overall, it cannot be argued, their message is about a minister using his clear duty for a number of soldiers, carrying a mission of singular importance for their country. It is evident as everything becomes clear by the end. *E*

Carly Simon: Anticipation (originally from 1971) How can you ignore someone so full of the past in the present of today. She had a very long stint with her unique signature coming from her, which was more than notable. She has been real couragous in recent times, and has come back with the same energy she has had in years passed. Also, she has been staying up with the times that's been keeping her unusual life more than interesting with being creative. She was exactly that, with waiting for the lateness of a certain date in her life with minutes to spare. He was late! She used that chance of time with being creative. All she needed was paper, pencil, and a lot of anticipating for a certain man. Have you picked up on who yet? No, it wasn't James T. How many of you recall a certain Massachusetts island event from '88? She did more than a pretty good job at showing different sides to her under the lights. It was quite rare to deliver that. Amazingly enough, the woman is known to have a ton of insecurities when it comes to being in front of a lot of us. But that was a back a few years or so. You may recall, it was no secret that she was missing from one golden big-night in the mid 1970s. It may of been unexpected for some who had no idea then of her terrified condition. Fear. She took the shortcut out. Now you may know the circumstances to that. It was a real disadvantage that took away days from her. The question is has she totally recovered? It might be very hard to say yes to that. I mean, she was so acclaimed then. These years, time has passed with her still in her successful earthly craft. Great! For you people, she means a lot of things; as it may be obvious as she is still today a unique person capable of being out there. That's what it is with her. Did you even know that she was born in NYC in 1945? Or is a fan of foreign culture on screen? I don't know about you, but do you know much about her? Sure you do. She never gave up. She had strength to carry her incredibly gifted sound in her from the summer of '70. Yeah, she has perseverance, real staying power. She has intrigued many since coming into that prominence she started way into '73. This is when she reached the top over all others. In different parts of the country, including the world. True, she caught the attention that never seemed to stop. She can really take you by surprise with what she can come up with. Even with a line of difficulties, she still is remembered in the present-day as glowing considerably. *E*

Captain America: The Nineties Well, how about another try, but this time adding a bit of an edge with an environmentalist ring. It was considerably better than the last one, but apparently it wasn't what was expected (again). It was sorta rushed out. Not a good idea. And it had to be taken back for one reason, more Yugoslavia action needed to be placed. Was that an afterthought? Also, the dates of it playing when it was showcased were constantly changing. Specifically, that all took less then 3 years to get it re-developed. Finally, it was aimed squarely for the small paying a fee box at home instead of where it should of been. But if you were livin' abroad, or even across the border, you'd be okay to see the one who valued your personal safety so to speak on a larger wall. You really got to love a guy who is against a hatched trapping scheme of anti-depredation. CA, he is the man with that broad smile, and can flex dramatically his covered muscles for you. All in all, it was a different take on the man who bashes. What did you think? Am I trying to provoke you? Nope, not a chance. Confused? I tell ya what, look below. *E*

Ronstadt: Just One Look (1978-9) Interestingly enough, what's pointed out, you may not know much about it, but in fact, it's remained in our culture for many years, ever since the mid '60s when it 1st came out. One of the originators, Miss Doris Troy, was the who made it a part of our youths. And in truth, its actually been redone by the Hollies in the early sixties, too. It's what brought them into place in the lights. Remember Miss Anne Murray, she tried it in '74. With regarding that, this may be the reason you know about it, or was it the old transistor you had then? Anyhow, we are focusing on 09-78, and even a few months later when JOL was charted, from one who is absolutely gorgeous and beloved. Do you remember early winter of say Seventy-Nine? That was the time when it was going on and on, no matter what hour it was. That made it every bit worth remembering. Of course, you remember back then. Round the globe, LR is known to be of Mexican descent, which definitely contributed to making her appealing to too many then. There is no joke in not being able to bury the fact that over thirty discs have been brought out from the woman of change. You may know, it takes a lot of confidence to pull-off what she did. Tucsonans are proud of her ever-changing abilities. Know what a Tucsonan is? Hey, wanna know just a little more? Well then, read far,far below the lines. By the way, you may notice a reference towards a day. I was pointing out a magazine issue with a cover from that time period a bit too fast. She was on so many other titles too! Then, it was just a high-point for her that would bring so many more covers. How many remember the variations of change that took place in the Eighties for the woman. It seemed to work, despite all that I could ever say, she was all-over the place with various styles then. It was hard to ignore with her success going through that time. And the thing is, she still is looking into the camera today. *E*

Mr. T and Tina - 1976 Sitcom Flop Mr. T and Tina was a forgettable ABC sitcom that aired for just five episodes on ABC in the fall of 1976. (Four other episodes were made but never aired.) It starred Pat Morita who had played restaurateur Arnold on Happy Days. Morita had also appeared on an episode of Welcome Back, Kotter as eccentric inventor Taro Takahashi. ABC bigwigs thought the character had the strength to successfully carry a series. Nope. Viewers still associated Morita with Happy Days and never took a liking to the wacky inventor. Nevertheless, the show was the first American sitcom centered on a person of Asian descent. In the series Morita played a widowed Japanese inventor who hires free-spirited Tina Kelly (Susan Blanchard) to be a governess for his children. Also in the cast was Ted Lange who, thanks to this show's quick cancellation, was able to sign onto a more successful ABC series--The Love Boat. Morita went on to co-star in the equally short-lived series Blansky's Beauties a few months later, making him one of the few actors to star in two unsuccessful, unrelated TV series during the same season.

Blanskys Beauties - 1977 Sitcom Flop After being part of two successful TV series in the early 1970s, Nancy Walker had two sitcoms in which she played the starring role cancelled in the same 1976-77 TV season. In September 1976, The Nancy Walker Show premiered. In it Walker played talent agent Nancy Kitteridge who was learning to live with her husband who had been away at sea for most of their 29-year marriage. The show bombed and was cancelled before New Year's Day. Undeterred, ABC cast Walker in another sitcom. This time she played Howard Cunningham's visiting cousin Nancy Blansky from Las Vegas on the February 4, 1977 episode of Happy Days. Blansky's Beauties premiered eight days later. In this show Nancy Blansky was a Las Vegas showbiz vet and current den mother to a bevy of beautiful showgirls. In addition to keeping order in the chaotic apartment complex where they all lived, Nancy staged the girls' big numbers at the Oasis Hotel. (Strangely, the Happy Days episode on which Nancy first appeared took place circa 1960, yet Blansky's Beauties was set in 1977.) Sixteen-year-old Scott Baio played the role of a "12-year-old going on 28." Eddie Mekka from Laverne and Shirley was also part of the cast. Blansky's Beauties ran for just 13 weeks before being axed. Recalled once critic, "This show had every 1970s teeny bopper element aimed to appeal to the lowest intellect and thus make it a hit--except this time cute boys and inane, jiggly, dumb blondes were not enough to cover for horrible scripts, contrived situations, bad acting, and unbelievable plots. The show tried to be a spin-off/tie-in to Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley (or at least ride on their successes) by utilizing actors - most notably Eddie Mekka and Scott Baio - from those shows and making the title role the cousin of Happy Days' Howard Cunningham. Having Nancy Walker as its star, scantily-clad bimbos wiggling around the set, and pretty boy co-stars to elicit screams from young girls in the audience, however, could never have saved it from itself. This show is a best-forgotten footnote to bad television."
