Upstairs, Downstairs was a BAFTA and Emmy award-winning British drama set in a large townhouse in Edwardian London that depicted the lives of the servants "downstairs" and their masters "upstairs". It ran on ITV for five series from 1971 to 1975. First shown in the US in 1974.
Upstairs, Downstairs attempted to portray life in a high-status house set against the events of early 20th century. Great events are featured prominently in the episodes but minor or gradual changes are noted as well. It stands as a document of the social and technological changes that occurred between 1903 and 1930. The lives of the servants are integral to the story.

This sensational bathing-suit photo, with her head looking over her right shoulder, became the number-one pin-up girl of the WWII era. It was later included in Life 100 Photos that Changed the World.
Grable was best-known for her shapely legs, which were showcased in all of her 20th Century Fox Technicolor musicals and were famously insured by her studio for $1,000,000 per leg at Lloyds of London.

The Howdy Doody Show was one of the first and easily the most popular children's television show in the 1950s and a reflection of the wonder, technical fascination, and business realities associated with early television. While Howdy and his friends entertained American children, they also sold television sets to American parents and demonstrated the potential of the new medium to advertisers.

A clip from The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. Buddy was born Charles Hardin Holley on Sept 7th 1936. He jumped into rock & roll from his background in country and western music. He played the guitar and sang, and also had a strong interest in recording studio production techniques. He's credited with being the first to use overdubbing and double-tracking. Buddy was killed in a plane crash in 1959, along with fellow rockers Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. That fatal plane crash was recalled as "the day the music died" in Don McLean's song "American Pie"... Holly's backing band was known as the Crickets, which inspired Paul McCartney and John Lennon to name their band the Beatles. Francis Ford Coppola borrowed Holly's song title for his 1986 movie Peggy Sue Got Married. We'll always remember you, Buddy, RIP.

Exciting new technology for 1955, I don't think there could have been much channel hopping then.
