Lou Gehrig set several Major League and American League records and was voted the greatest first baseman of all time by the Baseball Writers' Association. His record for most career grand slam home runs still stands today. He was a native of New York City, and played for the New York Yankees until his career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly referred to in the US as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Gehrig was known as The Iron Horse for his durability. Over a 15 season span between 1925 and 1939, he played in 2,130 consecutive games. The streak was broken when Gehrig became disabled with the fatal disease that claimed his life two years later. His streak, long believed to be one of baseball's few unbreakable records, stood for 56 years until finally broken by Cal Ripken, Jr., of the Baltimore Orioles on September 6, 1995.

Popular folklore says that if an athlete or team appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated, something negative often happens to the subject shortly thereafter. The alleged SI 'cover jinx' began with this November 18, 1957 issue. It proclaimed the University of Oklahoma's football team--a squad that was riding a fantastic 47-game winning streak--was unbeatable. Guess what happened in their next game? Notre Dame scored a late touchdown to upset Oklahoma 28-21.

At the 1974 Academy Awards, a streaker interrupted the goings-on just before the Best Picture Oscar was about to be presented. Host David Niven is rattled for a moment and then makes a witty remark.

I remember trying to make one of these in woodwork class. It looked like it but didn't work all that well.

No one is surprised that photographers are always there to document Britney's every move, but I wonder how this 1942 photo of Frances Farmer came to be. Did cops tip off the press in advance?
Initially, Farmer was arrested by Santa Monica police for drunk driving. She got into a heated exchange with a cop before being dragged off to jail. By the time she was re-arrested for violation of parole, Farmer had dislocated a hairdresser's jaw, got into a late night bar brawl, and streaked topless through Sunset Strip. She signed "Cocksucker" as her occupation at the Hollywood police station.
there is nothing new in the world...

The most spectacular of all baseball records is Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in 1941. (This photo was taken after DiMaggio tied the old record of 44 straight games with a hit set by Willie Keeler back in 1897.) No one has really seriously challenged it in all the years since. Depending on which mathematician you believe, DiMaggio's streak is supposedly safe for another 500 to 3,100 years!
