Marion Jones Tainted 100 Metres Gold Medal American sprinter Marion Jones 'won' the women's 100 metres at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Trouble was she was doped up on illegal steroids. Drug testing didn't catch her, but Jones later admitted to doping and returned her five Olympic medals from Sydney. On January 11, 2008 she was sentenced to six months in the sneezer for lying under oath.

Ben Johnson Steroid Scandal Can it be 20 years ago that this major sports scandal broke? Canada's Ben Johnson won the men's 100-metre sprint at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in a world-record time of 9.79 seconds. He didn't keep his gold medal very long. Two days later he tested positive for stanozolol--a banned steroid and was stripped of his gold medal. Track and field has never recovered from the scandal. Numerous other drug cheats have been busted since that infamous day in 1988. Whenever a world record is now broken, people tend to view it with great suspicion.

East German Steroid Swimmers At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.
