Remco Toys Monkey Division Whirlybird 1964 A mint in the box Remco Whirlybird. Remco made many variations of this whirlybird. This is the Monkey Division variation. Monkey Division was a line of toys Remco made and touted it as their "Guerilla War" line of toys. The had helmets, guns, rifles, bazookas, etc. Another wildly popular 60s toy put out during the Vietnam era. Toys glorifying war began to wane when the reports of scores of soliders getting killed filled our TV screens and the "Living Room War" we viewed on the news became unpopular, also it was more fun to make Love not War and the hippie era was ushered in. Parents began to object to toys glorifying war. The set also came with 25 soldiers, a tank, a jeep and truck. The whirlybird also carried all the stuff and had a working cargo hoist too. You are looking at a rarity. The soliders etc. are not shown but are still in their original package. I've often wondered how some of these toys these toys remain unplayed with? Perhaps it is old store stock and I've also heard that sometimes parents would leave the room of a deceased child the way it was when they passed. That is kind of creepy to me.

1976 Swine Flu fiasco Critics accurately called it the Epidemic That Never Was. In February 1976, a 19-year-old Army recruit, Pvt. David Lewis, reported to his drill sergeant at Fort Dix that he was feeling lethargic. Shortly thereafter he died of something similar to the deadly Spanish influenza that killed 20 million people in 1918 and 1919. After four other soldiers at Fort Dix became ill, Congress decided to enact an ambitious $135 million program with the lofty goal to innoculate all 220 milliion people in the United States against Swine Flu--so called because it was usually found in pigs. This photo shows president Gerald Ford signing the legislation into law. It proved to be wholly unnecessary. Only one person, Pvt. David Lewis, died of the flu. Many more are believed to have died from adverse reactions to the innoculations. The end result was national cynicism about all innoculation programs.

British First World War Executions During the First World War, the British army executed more than 300 of its own soldiers who were convicted of cowardice. Many of these troops had suffered mental breakdowns because of the horrors of trench warfare. A movement is now afoot to have them posthumously pardoned.

Paths of Glory Trailer Here is the original theatrical trailer from the First World War flick Paths of Glory (1957). Directed by Stanley Kubrick, it tells the story of inhuman French generals ordering a suicidal attack on an impregnable German position. When the attack fails, for the sake of morale and discipline, three soldiers are chosen to be executed for cowardice. One is selected randomly, another is chosen because he is 'socially undesirable,' and the third is chosen because the general has a personal issue with him. Kirk Douglas gives a great performance as regimental commander Colonel Dax who tries to stop the insanity. This film was banned in France until 1975. (It was also banned in Germany, where it was filmed, because the German government did not want to harm its diplomatic relations with France.)

Bloody Wednesday "Overshadowing September 11, 2001, another September day 139 years earlier remains the bloodiest single day in American history. On September 17, 1862, there were more than twice the number of fatalities that were suffered in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon . The number of casualties at Antietam was four times greater than American casualties at Normandy. more American soldiers died at Sharspburg (The Confederate name for the battle) than died in combat in all the other wars fought by this country in the nineteenth century combined:" — James McPherson, historian This day has come to be remembered as Bloody Wednesday Bloody Wednesday Sharpsburg - September 17, 1862 Photos .. America Comes of Age The Korean War America Comes of Age - The Korean War Like Lambs to the Slaughter US defense spending had reached a modern day low. The military was ill-prepared and ill-equipped, those in authority embraced questionable doctrines. From a post World War II soft life in Japan, with servants to wash their clothes and shine their boots, these American youth were suddenly uprooted and flung into harm's way. There was no "Remember Pearl Harbor." The North Korean People's Army was on a roll. The North Korean People's Army had invaded the Republic of Korea in South Korea only 11 days earlier and overwhelmed the ill-equipped Republic of Korea armed forces. The North Korean People's Army steamrolled into Seoul, driving refugees and regrouping Republic of Korea Army units before it, clogging roads and throwing the countryside into a panic. The invasion caught General Douglas MacArthur and his Far East Command and Eighth Army by surprise, despite recent intelligence reports that North Korea was planning for an attack on the Republic of Korea. General MacArthur had disregarded the reports, saying he did not believe war with North Korea was imminent. The events that unfolded on the Korean peninsula some 45 years ago offer a telling reminder of what happens when a force goes to war unprepared. Disaster lurks around every bend. Facing a force of 130,000 NKP soldiers, 3,000 Soviet advisors, a full array of heavy weapons, aircraft and the formidable T-34/85, arguably the best tank to come out of World War II. American GIs fought bravely at times. At other times when confronted with overwhelming, numerically superior forces, they "bugged-out" to the rear, cursing their government for sending them to this stinking, God-forsaken place where human feces were used to fertilize the land. THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF WWII The Greatest Mass Rape in History One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union. As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women. Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists." The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor. As Author Antony Beevor put it, "If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution."
