During the 1990s she was outspoken about her political views on such issues as immigration, Islam in France, miscegenation, and homosexuality. She is a sympathizer with the far right. Johnny Carson Confronts Don Rickles Despite not being particularly popular, this series is often remembered for an incident that occurred on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. During production of the series, Rickles appeared on Tonight Show with guest host Bob Newhart. While poking fun at Newhart, in faux-anger, Rickles slammed the cigarette box which Johnny Carson kept on his desk and broke it. When Carson returned to the show and discovered this, he took a camera crew to the studio next door where Sharkey was being taped. Carson disrupted the taping in order to tease Rickles about it, to the delight of the studio audiences of both shows. Carson also teased Harrison Page by speaking to him in an exaggerated AAVE accent. This incident was often replayed in Tonight Show retrospectives and was considered a highlight of the 1970s era of the show.

Hollywoods Sex Goddess Rita Hayworth Rita Hayworth was born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn NY, on October 17, 1918. She found fame as an American actress during the 1940's as the era's leading sex symbol. Although there was prejudice against Hispanic actors at the time, she is now widely regarded to be one of the first Hispanic-American "sex goddess" of "Golden Age" Hollywood with leading roles in film. Rita left her film career in 1948 to marry Prince Aly Khan, the son of the Aga Khan, the leader of the Ismaili sect of Shia Islam. After the marriage collapsed in 1951, Rita returned to America to star in a string of hit films, Affair in Trinidad, Salome, and Miss Sadie Thompson. Then she was off the big screen for another four years, due mainly to a tumultuous marriage to singer Dick Haymes. In 1957 she starred in Fire Down Below. Her last musical was Pal Joey. She got good reviews for her acting in such films as Separate Tables, and The Story on Page One, and continued working throughout the 1960s. It was during that time that she suffered an early onset of Alzheimer's disease, which was not diagnosed until 1980. In 1964 she appeared with John Wayne in Circus World and in 1972 she made her last film, The Wrath of God. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease in 1987 at age 68.

Eric Clapton Live LAYLA The story behind the song goes something like this. In 1966, George Harrison married Pattie Boyd, a model he met during the filming of A Hard Day's Night. During the late 1960s, Clapton and Harrison became good friends. Clapton contributed guitar work on Harrison's song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on The Beatles' White Album but remained uncredited, and Harrison played guitar pseudonymously on Cream's "Badge" from Goodbye. However, trouble was brewing for Clapton. Besides his difficulty in keeping a band together and his growing heroin addiction, when Boyd came to him for aid during marital troubles, Clapton fell desperately in love with her. The title, "Layla", was inspired by the Persian love story, The Story of Layla, by the Persian classical poet Nezami. When he wrote "Layla", Clapton had recently been given a copy of the story by a friend who was in the process of converting to Islam. Nezami's tale, about a moon-princess who was married off by her father to someone other than the man who was desperately in love with her, resulting in his madness, struck a deep chord with Clapton. Boyd divorced Harrison in 1977 and married Clapton in 1979. Harrison was not bitter about the divorce and attended Clapton's wedding with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. During their relationship, Clapton wrote another love ballad for her, "Wonderful Tonight." Clapton and Boyd divorced in 1989 after several years of separation.

Jan and Dean Baby Talk Jan Berry and Dean Torrence first became friends on the football team at L.A.'s University High, but Dean's first success came with Arnie Ginsburg (not the Boston DJ the duo scored a big doo-wop hit as Jan and Arnie with 1958's "Jennie Lee." That song, actually written about a stripper, gained Berry some friends in the business, including Herb Alpert and producer Lou Adler. Together with friend Torrence, who'd just returned from an Army stint, they developed a song called "Baby Talk." It was a smash, but it wasn't until 1963, with the release of the Four Seasons' inspired "Linda," that the Jan and Dean sound began to take shape. After meeting the Beach Boys on the L.A. scene, Jan befriended leader Brian Wilson, and thw two began work on what would become "Surf City." Inspired by the local scene and Wilson's very recent hits, "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari" -- and benefiting from Berry's amazing self-taught production skills, it went straight to Number One. The duo of Jan and Dean flourished well into the mid-sixties, weathering even the British Invasion. But on April 12, 1966, Berry's Stingray slammed into a parked gardener's truck (not at the site mentioned in "Dead Man's Curve," despite legend), and Jan entered a decade-long nightmare of physical recovery, drug abuse, and depression. By the mid-Seventies, amazingly, Berry could perform almost at normal, and the duo began an amazing comeback that lasted well into the mid-Eighties. Berry passed away in 2004.

Margaret Court Wins Grand Slam Here is a historic sports clip: The last four games of the 1970 U.S. Open women's singles final at Forest Hills. Margaret (Smith) Court thumps Rosie Casals to capture the Grand Slam. Only one other female had achieved the feat previously: Maureen Connolly in 1953. Only one woman has done it since: Steffi Graf in 1988. Bud Collins and Billie Jean King provide the commentary. (Check out Bud's trousers! He was always a flashy dresser.)

Anne White Tennis Body Suit Anne White was an American tennis player whose peak ranking on the WTA tour was 19th. Since she never got past the fourth round of a Grand Slam event, she is most famous for her first-round match at Wimbledon versus Pam Shriver in 1985 in which she wore a tight-fitting white body suit. The photographers had a field day with "White's whites." White did not figure she had done anything wrong as she had adhered to Wimbledon's all-white dress code. Nevertheless, when her match was suspended due to darkness, tournament referee Alan Mills told White to wear something more traditional the following day. Opponent Pam Shriver described White's outfit as "bizarre."

Ernie Kovacs Fatal Car Crash Early on the morning of January 13, 1962, comedian Ernie Kovacs was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Beverly Hills. He was 10 days away from his 43rd birthday. Kovacs had attended a party at the home of Milton Berle to celebrate the Christening of Berle's son. Kovacs and wife Edie Adams arrived in separate cars. Adams left the party not long before her husband. During a sudden rainstorm, Kovacs lost control of his vehicle on a curve. It slammed into a utility pole, partially ejecting Kovacs from the car. He died instantly from massive head and chest injuries. Police theorized Kovacs may have lost control of the car while groping for one of his trademark cigars. Kovacs was driving a Corvair, a vehicle later exposed by Ralph Nader for being unsafe in turns. Many newspapers featured a photo of Kovacs' dead body at the accident scene. Largely forgotten today, Kovacs was a brilliant comedian whose off-the-wall humor was years ahead of his time. David Letterman cites Kovacs as a huge influence. At the time of his death Kovacs was deeply in debt with the IRS. (Kovacs believed the taxation system was unfair so he steadfastly refused to pay income tax.) His widow worked for years to clear his debt. A daughter of Kovacs and Adams also died in a car crash in 1982.
