McDonalds Arch Deluxe flop McDonalds has had a few flops on their menu over the years. None was more costly than the Arch Deluxe fiasco of 1996. McDonald's marketed the sandwich as an adults-only burger. A very odd $100-million advertising campaign was launched to emphasize the point. Commercials featured kids who didn't want anything to do with the burger. (Some even said it was yucky.) Surveys showed the bizarre ad campaign was turning off potential customers from all demographic groups. Moreover, the Arch Deluxe was the highest priced burger on the menu, which did not help sales either. McDonald's then tried to salvage the burger with a more traditional advertising approach: This time the commercials showed McDonald's icon Ronald McDonald enoying the burger while doing adult activities, such as playing golf. It was too late, though. Even coupons allowing people to buy the burger for just a dollar failed to save the Arch Deluxe from extinction. McDonalds discontinued the sandwich in 1997.

Buster Brown Shoes oh, i have a HORRIBLE story to share with you about Buster Browns!! YEA, HUH? When my Dad was little, his Uncle gave him a little goat . . (that's the good part) they were very poor and it was time for Dad to get a new outfit. They didn't have any money, so HIS MOTHER sold the goat unbeknownst to my Dad . . Daddy came home with this incredibly uncomfortable Buster Brown outfit . . and THEN couldn't find his little knot-headed buddy!! Of all the nerve!! Bothered him all his life . . So one year for Christmas, i got him a life-sized carved goat that a 'fellow' whittled out of wood, and i put it outside the picture window at my parent's house with a big red bow on it. On Christmas morning when my sister and I got down there (now in our 40's) and we had opened all our presents, i went and opened the curtains . .TA DA!! Dad was THRILLED . .Mom is STILL mad because it's an eye sore!! LOL

Shirley Temple Dances with Buddy Ebsen Shirley Temple and Buddy Ebsen dance 'At The Codfish Ball.' This is from the movie Captain January (1936). Given the huge disparity in size between the two of them, this must have been a tough number to choreograph! Apparently Shirley learned the routine perfectly in about an hour.

1968 Wonderbra Commercial This is one in the series of early Wonderbra television advertisements. This one features the models in a photo shoot to emphasize the fashion of the product. The use of mannequins to showcase the bras are more pronounced. In 1969 the company was allowed by Canadian broadcasters to show live models with the bra. . .

1945 Look Cover Look was a bi-weekly, general-interest magazine published in Des Moines, Iowa from 1937 to 1971, with more of an emphasis on photographs than articles. A large-size magazine of 11 by 14 inches, it was generally considered the also-ran to Life magazine, which began publication only months earlier and also ended in 1971 . . .

Charlie Chaplin Beats The Kaiser Charlie Chaplin made a public service/propaganda movie in 1918. Titled 'The Bond,' the movie highlighted the bonds of friendship and the bonds of marriage, but emphasized the most important bond was...the Liberty Bond! Here's about half a minute of it.

Robert Wadlow Worlds Tallest Man The tallest man who ever lived was Robert Wadlow of Alton, Illinois. He was measured at an amazing 8 feet 11 inches just before his death in 1940. His enormous height was due to an overactive pituitary gland. Apparently surgery to correct the problem was deemed too risky. Wadlow's growth showed no signs of ever stopping. At age eight Wadlow stood 6-foot-2 and he was already taller and stronger than his father. At 13, when he was a Boy Scout, he was 7-foot-4. He attended college for one year until his size made such tasks as note-taking impossible. (His hands were too huge to manipulate a pen.) By the time he was 20, Wadlow needed special metal braces to support his legs. They inadvertently caused his death at age 21: One brace chafed Wadlow's leg causing an infection that led to a fatal case of blood poisoning. Wadlow's coffin was encased in cement to prevent grave robbers from stealing it.
