Hans Schmidt - Murdering Priest Father Hans Schmidt, a handsome Catholic priest originally from Germany, is the only person from his profession ever to be executed in American history. Born in Bavaria in 1881, Schmidt immigrated to the United States in 1909. He was first assigned to a church in Louisville, KY, but a dispute with a fellow priest prompted his relocation to St. Boniface Church in New York City. He quickly gained a reputation of being a fiery orator whose sermons often warned about the temptations of the flesh. Anna Aumuller, an attractive Austrian housekeeper employed by the rectory, caught his eye. The feeling was mutual. Contrary his vows of celibacy, Schmidt became sexually involved with Anna. It was later discovered the two were secretly married in a service of dubious legal standing performed by Schmidt himself! Anna became pregnant shortly thereafter. Schmidt realized this development would be the end of his priesthood, so he slit Anna's throat on September 2, 1913, dismembered her body, and dumped the pieces into the Hudson River. Nevertheless, the victim was identified because parts of the body had been wrapped in monogrammed linen that Anna had specially ordered. Confronted with this evidence, Schmidt confessed to the murder but attempted an insanity defense. It resulted in one hung jury but he was convicted in a second trial. Schmidt went to his death at Sing Sing Prison's electric chair on February 18, 1916. Police later found that Schmidt had another criminal enterprise: a secret apartment well stocked with counterfeiting equipment. Worse still, it was discovered that a nine-year-old girl had been murdered at Schmidt's former church in Louisville and the body--which the killer had tried to dismember--was buried in the church's basement. The church's janitor had been convicted of the crime, however.

The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz Who remembers this Cold War-era movie? Four members of the TV sitcom Hogan's Heroes (Bob Crane, John Banner, Leon Askin, and Werner Klemperer) starred alongside the comely Elke Sommer in The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz. The plot has Sommer playing the title character. She's an East German athlete who, while training for the 1968 Olympics, decides to pole vault over the Berlin Wall to freedom in the West. Crane plays an amoral American businessman with black market connections in East Germany who is willing to sell Schultz to either East or West Germany. Banner, Askin and Klemperer all play bumbling East German agents who come to the obvious conclusion that retrieving the sexy pole vaulter would be good for communist propaganda. The film was both a box office and critical disaster. Movie critic Leonard Maltin describes it as 'a laughless dud.'

Irene Ryan and Bob Crane on Password Irene Ryan (Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies) and Bob Crane (colonel Hogan from Hogan's Heroes) are the celebrity players from this episode of Password circa 1967. Donna Douglas (Elly Mae from The Beverly Hillbillies) makes a surprise appearance as a contestant. The game's producers had a bit of fun with Donna's unmistakable good looks. (No doubt today's anti-sexism crowd would be up in arms over such obvious objectifying.)

Howard Unruh - Camden NJ Mass Murderer On Tuesday, September 6, 1949, 28-year-old Howard Unruh shot and killed 13 people in Camden, NJ in a space of just 12 minutes. Three other victims suffered non-fatal wounds. The calm demeanor Unruh showed during shootings came to be known as "Camden's Walk of Death." Unruh, a decorated Second World War combat veteran, was a closet homosexual who believed he was the target of malicious gossip. The previous evening a date had failed to meet him at a local movie theater for a late-night screening. An angry Unruh stayed to watch the movie by himself and arrived home at about 3 a.m. to find that a fence he had erected between his house and his neighbor's adjacent lot to resolve a property dispute had been taken down, further aggravating him. Later that morning, Unruh suddenly snapped at his mother (whom he lived with) during breakfast. He chased her out of the house. At 9:20 a.m. Unruh proceeded on his murderous rampage through nearby businesses on River Road. With deadly accuracy, Unruh shot customers and proprietors randomly at a barber shop, a tailor shop, a shoe-repair shop and a pharmacy. Some luckless bystanders were gunned down in their cars while stopped at intersections. The youngest of Unruh's victims was just two years old. The toddler was killed as he looked out of an apartment window. When Unruh ran out of ammunition, he made his way back home and awaited his fate. Incredibly he spoke calmly, politely and amicably on the telephone to a local newspaper reporter while he awaited arrest. Unruh was shot in the leg by an armed citizen during his rampage but seemed oblivious to his wound. He was judged to be insane and thus not fit to stand trial under New Jersey law. He was held in a mental institution for more than 60 years before dying in 2009 at the age of 88. Hardly remorseful, in his last known interview Unruh said he would have happily killed thousands of people had he had the opportunity.
