Man Catches Bullet Between His Teeth This clip is an excerpt from an old 50's TV program called 'You Asked For It', a popular human-interest show that originally aired on TV between 1950-59. On the show, viewers were asked to send in postcards describing something that they wanted to see on television, such as the reenactment of William Tell shooting an apple off his son's head. (1950 US National Archery Champion Stan Overby performed the feat, shooting an apple off his assistant's head.) Short film clips were also presented, with the selections based upon viewer requests. As a consequence, many of the clips were presented multiple times. Some of the more popular clips included a tour of the bizarre Winchester Mystery House and the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The program was named 'The Art Baker Show', after the series creator and host. In April 1951, the show's title was changed to 'You Asked For It'. Originally airing on the cash-strapped DuMont Network from December 1950 to December 1951, it moved to ABC, where it remained until the end of its original run in September 1959. The show was sponsored by Skippy peanut butter and Studebaker Automobiles. I remember watching this series as a kid, but if I'd seen this show it would have definitely stood out in my memory! No way did this man perform this 'feat', but it sure must have left kids wondering back then..he probably had the bullet already in his mouth and the officer was shooting blanks...duh..I mean..shooting a real bullet almost point blank into a man's face on live tv is going to be messy, to say the least..

Ken Burns Civil War opening I generally avoid hyperbole, but Ken Burns' 1989 PBS documentary The Civil War was the best program I've ever seen on television. Here is the first nine minutes. It just oozes quality.

Did Mallory Conquer Everest First Thirty-seven-year-old British mountaineer George Mallory may have reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1924--29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary achieved the feat. In June 1924, Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted to reach Everest's summit via the North Col route. The twosome were last spotted a few hundred metres from the summit by geologist Noel Odell. They were not seen alive again. Mallory's well preserved frozen body was not found until 1999. (Irvine's body has yet to be found.) Did Mallory die trying to reach the summit or did he reach it and perish on the descent? Nobody knows for certain. His camera has not been found. However, Mallory intended to leave a photo of his wife at Everest's summit if he got there. The photo was not found on Mallory's body.

The Ladies Who Lunch by Dinah Shore Jane Russell (personally I think Jane wasn't drinking grape juice) This gem comes from a 1979 episode of "Dinah!" subtitled "Glamour Is..." with classic glamour gals Diahann Carroll, Jean Peters, Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds and Jane Russell as well as the designer Bill Travilla who Dinah refers to in this song from Stephen Sondheim's "Company". I've never seen this one as a duet but it may be the only video record of Miss Russell's performance. Someone please let me know if I'm wrong. Jane was the replacement for Elaine Stritch in the original Broadway production and judging by her contribution here, probably did a bang-up job.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs Bruce Finch 1982 Sugar Ray Leonard was at the peak of his abilities in February 1982 when he dispatched Bruce Finch in three rounds in Reno, Nevada to retain his world welterweight championship. Ray was the best fighter I've seen in my three decades of watching the sweet science. He had no weaknesses.

Parachutist Disrupts Heavyweight Title Fight I thought I'd seen every weird occurrence at a sports event until I saw this. During a 1993 bout between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe for the world havyweight title at an outdoor venue in Las Vegas, a parachutist attempted to descend into the ring in the seventh round. His chute snagged and he became entangled in the ropes. Reports say Bowe's entourage gave the intruder a pretty good pummeling before security staff intervened.
