On The Set with Steven Spielberg In a career that spans almost four decades his stories never cease to amaze, thrill and touch our hearts. Spielberg has also begun plans for an Abraham Lincoln biopic, titled 'Lincoln', which will star Liam Neeson as the 16th US President, and is also scheduled for release in 2008. He's also started working on a space travel movie entitled 'Interstellar'. It will be based on real scientific theories of black holes, worm holes, time travel, and gravity. Steven is also planning a motion capture film trilogy based on The Adventures of Tintin. 'Jurassic Park IV' is also in development, and another of his upcoming projects is a miniseries which he will produce with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, titled 'The Pacific'.

The Jetsons ABC TV Promo A Rare black and white promo from 1962. "The Jetsons," aired on prime time after 16 months in development, was set in 2062, 100 years after the first episode was broadcast. Supposedly, the series had no chance at survival, because it was scheduled opposite "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" and "Dennis the Menace," which had both built up an audience in previous seasons. However, ABC continued to show the original 24 episodes of "The Jetsons" for 15 years! The laugh track was removed when Worldvision syndicated these episodes in 1985. Episode title cards were added to all of the Jetsons shows, old and new, and a remake of the old Jetsons theme song was employed for use.

Robin Cousins Amazing Performance This was just way too cool! Tap dancing on ice skates! And I just LOVE this song...Tommy Dorsey performed it, I believe. Cousins has made the successful transfer from sport to stage, playing the Prince in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Munkustrap in Cats, and Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Show in the West End. He also starred in, produced, directed, and/or choreographed many international TV ice spectaculars such as The Nutcracker on Ice, Sleeping Beauty on Ice, The Wizard of Oz on Ice, Toy Story on Ice, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express on Ice, Holiday on Ice, and the movie The Cutting Edge. He appeared as the head judge on the show Dancing on Ice in January - March 2006, again in 2007 and scheduled for 2008.

Ten-Cent Beer Night Riot On June 4, 1974 the Cleveland Indians held the most short-sighted promotion in pro sports history: Ten-Cent Beer Night. There was no limit to the amount of 10-ounce Stroh's beers one could buy for a dime each. Hey, what could possibly go wrong? The promotion drew a crowd of 25,000 people--about three times what the Indians were usually drawing in 1974. The souses chugged down more than 65,000 cups of beer. The effects of the discount brews caused rowdyism to break out in the stands from the get-go. It eventually spread to the field. Among the lowlights: Fans tossed firecrackers at the Rangers players. A naked man ran onto the field and slid into second base. A father and son duo ran onto the field and mooned the crowd. The climax occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning. A fan entered the field and tried to swipe Jeff Burroughs' glove. When he resisted, punches were exchanged and more fans entered the field to join the frey. Both the Rangers and the Indians came out of their dugouts wielding bats to defend Burroughs. Mayhem ensued. Fans ripped chairs from the stadium and tossed them in all directions. The game was abandoned by the umpires with the score tied 5-5. The visiting Texas Rangers were awarded a forfeit win. The Indians had several more discount beer promotions scheduled--and still intended to hold them--but the American League outlawed them.

Glenn Miller Disappearance Renowned band leader Glenn Miller's disappearance in 1944 has led to some interesting speculation. On December 15, 1944, Miller, a major in the U.S. Army, and two other military personnel departed from an RAF base in England in a small aircraft bound for Paris. Miller was scheduled to meet with his band and begin a concert tour for U.S troops in recently liberated areas of France. Miller's airplane never arrived. No wreckage nor any bodies were ever found. The prevailing wisdom is that bad weather over the English Channel caused the plane to crash into the sea killing all aboard. Two other possibilities have emerged: That same day a squadron of bombers destined for Germany had their mission aborted because of the inclement weather. Unable to return with their payload of explosives, the squadron was ordered to jettison their bombs into the English Channel. Years later one aviator claimed some of the discarded bombs accidentally caused a small aircraft flying below the squadron--which could have been Miller's--to crash into the sea. A more lurid tale claims Miller landed safely in France but died of a heart attack in a Parisian brothel. According to this yarn, Miller's seedy death was covered up by the military for propaganda reasons. This latter rumor circulated during the war and was given new life when the German tabloid Bild reprinted the brothel tale in 1997. Miller biographers consider that story to be sheer nonsense. They rightly ask, 'What became of Flight Officer John Morgan and Lt. Col. Norman F. Baessell (the other two men aboard Miller's plane) who also vanished?'

Bewitched Switches Darrins A great many TV sitcoms have experienced cast changes during their runs. None, however, was more startling to the average viewer than when the role of Darrin Stephens on Bewitched went suddenly from Dick York to Dick Sargent in 1969. York had portrayed Darrin since the series premiered in 1964. However, York had suffered a severe back injury while filming a movie in 1959. He became heavily dependent on pain killers for sleeping and getting through the day. By 1968 York's back injury was so crippling that he had to be written out of several episodes and/or the show's shooting schedule had to be changed to accommodate his absences. Often, when York was able to work, his scenes were structured so he could lie down on a couch or a bed. Finally in January 1969 he passed out during a taping and had to be rushed to a hospital. During York's hospitalization, producer William Asher asked York if he wanted out of the show. York knew he couldn't continue so he reluctantly agreed. He was replaced by the much taller Dick Sargent who played a more assertive version of Darrin. How did the show account for the dramatic change in appearance of its leading male character? One idea was to have Darrin the victim of a spell that made him grow. Eventually it was decided that nothing would be said; Sargent just assumed York's old role without explanation. Sargent played Darrin until the show's run ended in 1972. Bewitched fans constantly debate which actor played Darrin better. Sadly, York fell on hard times after leaving the series. Bad investments drained his savings. He died in poverty in 1992.

Tammy Grimes Show 1966 Frank's comment about ABC's 1966-67 schedule made reference to the short-lived Tammy Grimes Show. Here is a black-and-white version of the first 10 minutes of the first episode. Broadway star Tammy Grimes played madcap, free-spending bank heiress Tamantha Ward. Dick Sargent (later to be the second Darrin on Bewitched) played her brother, Terence. Only 10 episodes were ever made, and only four were aired before the series was axed. The Tammy Grimes show was produced by William Dozier, the man responsible for making Batman a huge hit on ABC. The network hoped Dozier could strike gold again with The Tammy Grimes Show. It didn't happen. Slotted against My Three Sons and Star Trek, poor ratings and negative reviews quickly killed this show.
