Born Lyon Chiam Green on Feb 12, 1915 in Ottawa, Ontario to Russian Jewish immigrants. The first of his American television roles was as family patriarch Ben Cartwright on the long-running western series Bonanza (1959–1973), making Greene a household name. After the cancellation of Bonanza, he was host for the CBS nature documentary series Last of the Wild from 1974 to 1975. In the 1977 miniseries Roots, he played the first master of Kunta Kinte, John Reynolds. Greene's next best-known role was Commander Adama, another patriarchal figure, in the science fiction feature film and television series Battlestar Galactica (1978–1979) and Galactica 1980 (1980). He was also the host and narrator of the nature series, Lorne Greene's New Wilderness. For nearly a decade, Lorne co-hosted the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC. Sadly, he died of pneumonia on September 11, 1987 in Santa Monica, California at the age of 72. Only weeks before his death, he had been signed to appear in a revival of Bonanza. The song on this video was performed by Lorne, entitled The Place Where I Worship. It's very fitting for this day and I hope, no matter what your religious beliefs, it will give you a feeling of peace.

Cleft-chinned, steely-eyed, and ruggedly handsome, Kirk Douglas is a star of international cinema who rose from being "the ragman's son" (the name give to his best-selling 1988 autobiography) of Russian-Jewish ancestry to become a bona fide superstar. When I was 7 yrs old my grandmother (being a big fan) took me to see my first Kirk Douglas film, Man Without a Star, and he became my first hero. If you're also a fan, I hope this clip will bring back a lot of fond memories.

Only one episode of Hogan's Heroes was ever shot in black-and-white: the pilot episode. Here is the introduction. You'll note a few changes from the later introductions. The pilot episode had a Russian character in it and Sergeant Carter was absent. Once the series began in earnest, the Russian character was ditched and replaced by Larry Hovis' Sgt. Carter. (Hovis had appeared in the pilot episode as a guest character.) This move actually better reflected reality. Russians captured by the Germans were not treated nearly as well as those from other Allied countries. There would have been no Russians in a Luftstalag.

Danny was born David Daniel Kaminsky in Brooklyn in 1913, the son of an immigrant Russian tailor. After dropping out of high school he worked for a radio station and later as a comedian in the Catskills. After his solo success in the Catskills, he joined the dancing act of Harvey and Young in 1933. On opening night he lost his balance and the audience broke into a roar of laughter. He would later incorporate this into his act. Enjoying growing popularity in 1939, Danny won over the Broadway crowd that same year with his show-stopping comic singing in "Lady in the Dark," in which he rattled off the names of more than fifty polysyllabic Russian composers in 39 seconds in a song called "Tchaikovsky." Throughout the early 1940's he performed night club acts, on Broadway, and to support the troops overseas during WWII. Though he appeared in his first film in 1937, it wasn’t until almost 10 years later that his film career hit its stride. Throughout his career he starred in seventeen movies, including THE KID FROM BROADWAY (1946), THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (1947), THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949), HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1952), and the incomparable THE COURT JESTER (1956). In one of his final performances, he proved the versatility of his talent and earned rave reviews for his impassioned portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in the 1981 television movie SKOKIE. In 1987 Danny died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. An amazing actor, singer, dancer, comic, and all-around entertainer, he was a Renaissance man off the stage as well as on, where he was a celebrated chef, a baseball team owner, and an airplane pilot, flying everything from Piper Cubs to Boeing 747’s. His deep and continued commitment to the betterment of the people of the world was an inspiration, and his intelligent humor created a style all his own that made him one of the most beloved entertainers of his time. This is Jocelyn Wildenstein. She's become something of a celebrity since her plastic surgery, having been on The Tonight Show several years ago, and she is actually known internationally as the Cat Woman. She made herself look like this in order to get her husband back, by getting numerous silicone injections in the cheeks, lips, and in the chin, had her eyes lifted and pulled back, and a rhynoplasty, the results were to resemble a cat-like figure. The plan to look like this backfired when her husband began an affair with a Russian Model.

Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein's silent 1927 masterpiece Battleship Potemkin, about the failed 1905 Russian Revolution, contains this memorable and powerful scene. Tzarist troops open fire on demonstrators assembled on a staircase in Odessa. One is a mother with a baby carriage.

Stevens originally wrote this song as part of a proposed musical project with actor Nigel Hawthorn called 'Revolussia', which was set during the Russian Revolution; the song was about a boy who wanted to join the revolution against the wishes of his father. The musical project faded away but 'Father and Son' remained, now in a more general context that reflected not just the societal conflict of Stevens' time, but also captured the impulses of older and younger generations in general.
