Life With Lucy - Opening Credits After being away from sitcoms for 12 years, Lucille Ball returned to TV in the fall of 1986 with great fanfare at age 75 as the star of the ABC comedy Life With Lucy. (Here is the opening montage. The theme song was performed by Eydie Gorme.) Madelyn Davis and Bob Carroll, who had written scripts for I Love Lucy, were the show's producers. The premise of the show was that the recently widowed Lucy Barker decides to help out at the hardware store her husband ran. The only problem was she had had nothing to do with the store while her husband was alive, so she was clueless about everything. Eighty-year-old Gale Gordon also came out of retirement to play Lucy's husband's business partner Curtis McGibbon. Lucy had just moved in with her daughter Margo's family. Margo was married to Curtis's son, a law student. At the end of the first episode Curtis moves into the same house too. Got it? After a decent showing in the ratings for the first episode, Life With Lucy steadily plummeted downward. Even guest appearances by John Ritter and Audrey Meadows failed to halt the show's decline. After eight weeks it was dismally ranked 73rd out of 76 shows. Even though ABC had committed to 22 episodes, the scripts for 14 shows had been written, and 13 had been filmed, ABC pulled the plug after the eighth episode aired. Lucy was said to have been heartbroken that the public no longer wanted to see her on TV. She died about 30 months later.

Dymo Label Makers Anyone remember this gadget? The Dymo Label Maker was quite popular for a while in the 1970s. A version of it had actually been around for years, but only for industrial use. Once the product became easily accessible and small enough to be held in one's hand did it become well known. Apparently you can still buy the colorful label rolls if you look hard enough for them.

Boston Bruins vs NY Rangers Fans - 1979 The NHL in the 1970s could often be wild. This was epitomized as the decade neared its end on Sunday, December 23, 1979. On that date the visiting Boston Bruins angrily invaded the stands at Madison Square Garden to administer frontier-style justice on a few New York Rangers fans who had taken some liberties. (It's hard to see the exact cause of the fracas in this video, but this is what happened: A fan, 30-year-old John Kaptain, reached over the glass and belted Boston's Stan Jonathan across the face with a rolled-up program and drew blood. Kaptain then grabbed Jonathan's stick. After that...mayhem ensued!) Among the most enraged Bruins was the normally peaceable Peter McNab. Feisty Terry O'Reilly, not surprisingly, was the most zealous participant. The enduring image, however, is Mike Milbury ripping a shoe from Kaptain's foot and beating him with it! Milbury eventually threw Kaptain's shoe onto the ice. O'Reilly and Milbury would both later coach the Bruins. Kaptain, who attended the game with his brother James and his father Manny, had to make his way home from Madison Square Garden minus one shoe. Some 300 Ranger fans attacked the Bruins' bus outside the arena. Because of this crazy incident, the NHL mandated the height of the protective glass surrounding all teams' ice surfaces be dramatically increased. John Kaptain died in 1999.

Unknown Chaplin Film Found - Zepped In 2009 a British film buff named Morace Park purchased an old nitrate film canister on eBay for $5. When Park got his purchase he was surprised to find a roll of old silent film inside. He was downright shocked to discover it was a 1916 Charlie Chaplin comedy called Zepped that no one had ever heard of--including his neighbor who was a film historian. It turned out that Zepped was produced without Chaplin's knowledge by using outtakes from three known Chaplin films from 1914 and 1915 along with some animated sequences. The seven-minute film's climax is when Kaiser Wilhelm emerges from a gigantic sausage and Charlie knocks him out--presumably for the sake of bolstering the spirits of Londoners who suffered through sporadic German zeppelin raids during the First World War. Since the initial discovery, two other copies of the film have turned up--and researchers have found documented evidence that Zepped was shown by some British exhibitors in 1916 and 1917. Based on the notations on the film and titles that use the uniquely English term 'blighty,' the film was put together illegally either in Great Britain or Egypt. Who was behind the illegal project will probably never be known for certain.

Hypnotist on WML Jackie Carroll, a fetching 18-year-old female hypnotist, is a contestant on the January 5, 1958 episode of What's My Line. Some of the questions she's asked can be interpreted rather salaciously if one had thoughts along those lines.
