The Man Who Inspired Rocky Chuck Wepner's surprisingly good showing against Muhammad Ali in 1975 inspired Sylvester Stallone's Rocky. Here is Wepner on the cover of Sports Illustrated prior to the Ali bout.

Longest-owned restaurant in America question mark Okay, friends, I'm going to try this again, because I just found out that the reason no one could access this post was because of the question mark in the title. Here's a challenge for you. In my community there is a restaurant called Ramon's Cactus Patch, and it's been owned and operated by Ramon Sanchez since 1938. I admit that most of the work is done today by his son Roque (pronounced Rocky) and his daughter Ramona, but Ramon, in his mid-nineties, is still the boss! Can you come up with a restaurant still operating with the same owner for a longer time? Not just the same family, but the same individual. The Cactus Patch has been in its present location since 1962.

Rocky Marciano Wins Heavyweight Title One of boxing's most memorable knockout punches: The date is September 23, 1952. Trailing on the scorecards after 12 rounds, challenger Rocky Marciano knocks out champion Jersey Joe Walcott with one devastating right hand in he fateful 13th round. (The commentary is in Italian.)

Rocky Marciano Battles Ezzard Charles On June 17, 1954, world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano had his toughest title defense. Challenger Ezzard Charles (a former champ) took Marciano the 15-round distance. It was a rugged affair, as this photo shows.

Alferd G Packer - Cannibal The only person in American history to be convicted of cannibalism was Alferd (sometimes written 'Alfred') G. Packer. Packer, a Civil War veteran, was one of 21 prospectors who intended to try their luck in the Colorado gold fields. The group got to Provo, Utah in February 1874. Against the advice of the locals, Packer and five others decided to continue their trek across the Rocky Mountains in the dead of winter. They quickly got lost and ran out of provisions. Packer was the only survivor. Two months later Packer was seen by other members of the original prospectors' group who didn't believe his story that his companions never returned from a search for food. Packer eventually confessed to cannibalism, escaped custody twice, but was found in Wyoming in 1883. Packer was sentenced to 40 years in jail. He was paroled by Colorado's governor in 1901 and died six years later at age 65. In 1968, as a gag, students at the University of Colorado at Boulder voted to name their school cafeteria the Alferd G. Packer Memorial Grill. It bears the slogan, 'Have a friend for lunch!' A statue of Packer was erected on campus in 1982.

Rocky Marciano Punch Photo One of my favorite sports photographs: Challenger Rocky Marciano lands a solid right hand on champ Jersey Joe Walcott's jaw during their September 23, 1952 world heavyweight title fight in Philadelphia. Trailing on the scorecards, Marciano rallied to win by a 13th-round kayo. Many people wrongly assume this was the knockout punch; it wasn't. Walcott was along the ropes when Marciano caught him with the fateful blow.

The Slap Maxwell Story Dabney Coleman played egotistical sportswriter Slap Maxwell in The Slap Maxwell Story--a short-lived "dramady" that ran for 22 episodes on ABC during the 1987-88 season. Maxwell was a thoroughly dislikable character. The old-school Maxwell wrote his column, Slap's Shots, on a manual typewriter. It was filled with libelous rumors and innuendos which caused his second-rate newspaper, The Ledger, to be the frequent recipient of lawsuits. Maxwell's personal life was also a mess. It included rocky relationships with his girlfriend, ex-wife, and estranged son. None of the 22 episodes had titles. Curiously, in 1983-84 Coleman had played a similarly dislikable TV talk show host in the equally short-lived NBC sitcom Buffalo Bill. It, though, was a favorite among critics and was nominated for several awards before being axed due to poor ratings.
