Howard Johnsons Restaurants Another iconic American business has ended. The last remaining Howard Johnson's restaurant--located in Lake George, NY--shut its doors in 2017. First established in 1954, at one time HoJo's numbered more than 600 restaurants. They were common sights along America's highways, often attached to motor inns. The chain is fondly remembered for its large portions of quality food and its wide variety of ice cream selections. However, competition from fast food restaurants took its toll. By 2009 only three Howard Johnson's restaurants remained. Here's a photo montage from the Lake Placid HoJo's.

Forgotten Show : Run Joe Run The reference book Total Television describes Run, Joe Run as a cross between Lassie and The Fugitive--which is quite accurate. The premise of this NBC kids' show (which ran on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976) was that an army German Shepherd named Joe is wrongly accused of attacking his trainer in the K-9 Unit, Sgt. William Corey. Joe flees but is relentlessly pursued by reward-seeking folks who want him to face retribution for the crime he did not commit! While on the lam, Joe would help people in distress. It was one of a scant few live-action Saturday morning shows. During the first season, Arch Whiting played Sgt. Corey who also pursued Joe--to tell him he'd been exonerated. In the second season, the show's focus shifted. A new character was added: a young biker named Josh McCoy (played by Chad States) who became Joe's do-gooding ally. Here are the opening and closing montages from the first season.

Cheers - Death of Eddie Lebec Jay Thomas, who appeared as Eddie Lebec in nine episodes of the TV sitcom Cheers, died from cancer on August 24, 2017 at the age of 69. On Cheers, Lebec was a French-Canadian goalie for the Boston Bruins whom Carla (Rhea Perlman) meets while he is riding a hot streak. However, as soon as Eddie and Carla start dating, he slumps badly. (To thwart the jinx, Eddie and Carla continue to date, but they go through a 'breakup' ritual before every game.) The Eddie Lebec character was popular, so the show's writers decided to have Carla and Eddie marry. However, Thomas, who hosted a radio show, got himself into hot water one day when a caller innocently asked him what it was like to be a Cheers cast member. The irrepressible Tomas replied, Its brutal. I have to kiss Rhea Perlman. Perlman happened to be listening to the broadcast--and Thomas never made another appearance on Cheers. The show's writers had to come up with a way to drop Eddie Lebec from the show. In his final episode on Cheers, Eddie's hockey career was over so he had gotten a job in an ice show as a skating penguin. The writers came up with the memorable idea of killing Eddie off in a Zamboni accident in an episode cleverly titled "Death Takes a Holiday on Ice." (The premise is quite ridiculous: Have you ever seen how slowly a Zamboni moves? Its design makes it almost impossible for a Zamboni to run over anyone.) Despite the absurdity of the plot twist, Cheers fans loved it. Eddie's death also led to a further plot development: At Eddie's funeral it was revealed that he was a bigamist whose second wife was strikingly similar to Carla! According to writer Ken Levine, this idea worked well as it made Eddie look like a heel, thus viewers were happy he was no longer part of the show.

Gonzales-Pasarell 1969 Wimbledon Marathon Before the advent of tiebreakers in tennis, every set needed to be played until one player had won six games with at least a two-game advantage. In the first round of the 1969 Wimbledon tourney, Pancho Gonzales and former NCAA champ Charlie Pasarell needed more than five hours and 112 games to decide a winner in a match spread over two days (June 25 and 26). Here is five minutes of terrific video from that match with original BBC commentary by Dan Maskell. After dropping the first set 22-24, the 41-year-old Gonzales, who was hot-tempered, was irked when play wasn't suspended due to impending darkness. He basically tanked the second set. Nevertheless, Gonzales rallied to win in five sets the next day. The final score was 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9. The 112 games played in a single men's match stood as a Wimbledon record for 41 years. (Note that the electric scoreboard could not handle set scores in the twenties. It shows Pasarell winning the opening set 4-2 instead of 24-22.)

Good Heavens - Failed 1976 Sitcom Does anyone remember this short-lived sitcom from the spring of 1976? Good Heavens starred Carl Reiner as Mr. Angel--a visitor from the hereafter who descends to earth to answer wishes and do good deeds for deserving people. Reiner was the show's only recurring character. Guest stars included Susan Dey, Florence Henderson, Penny Marshall, Alex Karras and Don Ameche. Only 13 episodes aired sporadically on ABC from February to June 1976. Here is the show's intro. Don't blink: It runs for a mere 17 seconds.

1987 Little League World Series Blowout Entering the final of the 1987 Little League World Series, the American champions from Irvine, CA had won 18 games in a row. Two of the wins were in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the single-elimination tourney by scores of 13-0 over Dover, NH and 8-1 versus Chesterfield, IN. Their opponents in the final would be the team from Hualien, Taiwan--a country that had dominated the tournament for years, crushing all opposition. Jim Palmer, doing commentary for ABC, opined that the Irvine team might have what it takes to beat the seemingly invincible Taiwanese team. It didn't work out that way. Irvine lost 21-1 in the most lopsided LLWS championship game ever. The game was so one-sided and was taking so long to complete that ABC terminated the broadcast so its affiliates could go to their scheduled local news programming. The relentless rout also persuaded the LLWS poobahs to adopt a mercy rule to prevent similar beatdowns in the future. Therefore Taiwan's record 20-run margin of victory is likely to stand forever.

Shirley Temple Birthday 1935 Here's a brief clip, narrated by Lowell Thomas, chronicling Shirley Temple's birthday festivities in 1935. This newsreel says Shirley is celebrating her sixth birthday. That's what Fox studios and Shirley herself thought. Nope. She actually had her seventh birthday in 1935. (Her mom had chopped a year off her age, listing 1929 to be Shirley's year of birth instead of 1928. Mrs. Temple had been advised by the father of another child actor to fudge the year of Shirley's birth to make her appear even younger. It was supposed to enable her to get more acting roles. I guess it worked.) Be that as it may, Shirley was an adorable child--at any age.
