Last Public Guillotine Execution 1939 Beginning in 1793, death by guillotine was the official method of capital punishment in France. Public executions were the norm and attracted large, enthusiastic crowds. The last criminal to be publicly executed in France was multiple murderer Eugen Weidmann who lost his head on June 17, 1939. His execution was clandestinely filmed by a spectator from his apartment window. (This photo is a frame of that film.) The wild exuberance of the crowd prompted the French government to cease all further public executions. Still, the death penalty remained on the books in France until 1981. The last guillotine customer was torture-murderer Hamida Djandoubi who assumed room temperature, away from the eyes of the public, on September 10, 1977.

Ouch Corporal punishment was still allowed in 1985 (in the UK) when this cartoon was first published in my book Microholics. I'm sure many of you can relate to "the bad old days" when teachers would use any excuse to cane you!

The Great Gazoo Partway through the final season of The Flintstones, a new character was added to the animated sitcom: The Great Gazoo. Gazoo was a tiny, green, floating alien who possessed magical powers. He was exiled to Earth from his home on planet Zatox as punishment for having invented a doomsday machine, a weapon of immense destructive power. Gazoo was discovered by Fred and Barney when his flying saucer crashed near Fred's car. Gazoo referred to Fred and Barney as 'dum-dums.' Gazoo secretly befriended Fred and Barney but constantly caused problems for them. Gazoo's name derived from the lyrics of a 1909 song, 'King of the Bungaloos,' by Charles Straight and Gene Greene. Harvey Korman provided The Great Gazoo's voice. Because Gazoo was introduced into The Flintstones midway through the sixth and final season (in the October 29, 1965 episode titled 'The Great Gazoo'), Gazoo's inclusion is often cited by fans of the show as the moment the series 'jumped the shark.' In total, The Great Gazoo appeared in 10 episodes of The Flintstones.

Richard Speck Murders 1966 On July 13, 1966, one of the most horrific crimes in American history occurred: Eight women aged between 21 and 23 were tortured and killed in a Chicago dormitory by Richard Speck. They were all student nurses who were a month away from graduation. The 24-year-old Speck (pictured here at his trial) was a lifelong felon whose lengthy criminal record included violent sexual assaults. On the night of the murders, Speck systematically killed his victims by strangulation or stabbing over a period of several hours. He also raped the eighth victim. Speck may have lost track of how many women were in the dorm room. A potential ninth victim, Cora Amurao, wriggled out of her bindings and hid under a bed while Speck's killing spree went on in another room. Amurao later identified Speck in court. Speck was found guilty and sentenced to die in the Illinois electric chair. The death sentence was later commuted on constitutional grounds. Instead Speck was given a 1,200-year sentence at Statesville Prison. For years Speck denied having any memories of the killings. However, in a 1978 interview he confessed to remembering everything. In a 1988 prison videotape, Speck was seen partying with fellow prisoners who were high on illegal drugs. The video recorded Speck mocking his victims. Portions of the video were broadcast nationally in 1996, increasing the support for capital punishment. By that time Speck was dead; he had died of a heart attack in prison on December 5, 1991, a day before his 50th birthday. No family member came forward to claim his body.

North Korean Soccer Team Punished For Losing The North Korean soccer team qualified for the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa. Their chances of success were considered slim. In fact North Korean television, fearing an embarrassment, planned no coverage of the team's games. They lost their first match to mighty Brazil by a close 2-1 score. With cause for optimism, arrangements were made for the team's second game to be broadcast in North Korea. To the chagrin of the communist regime, Portugal routed the North Koreans 7-0. As soon as the score reached 2-0, the signal was yanked off the air. In their final game, Ivory Coast beat North Korea 3-0. When the players returned home, they were publicly shamed: the team and its manager were forced onto a stage at the People's Palace of Culture in front of 400 government officials, students, and journalists. According to reports, the athletes were subjected to a six-hour barrage of criticism for their poor performances that was led by a TV commentator and sports minister Pak Myong-chol. The players were asked to step up in turn and publicly criticize manager Kim Jong-hun, who had apparently been singled out for punishment. He was forced into a construction job because, it is thought, his team's failure was seen as a personal betrayal of Kim Jong-un, the son of leader Kim Jong-il.
