REMEMBERING GRACE KELLY Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia on Nov 12, 1929. As a young child, Grace decided she wanted to become an actress, and studied acting (primarily theater) at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and worked as an actress and model in New York before moving to Hollywood. When she was in New York, Grace promoted Old Gold cigarettes and appeared on the covers of magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Redbook. Grace debuted in the film 14 Hours, in a minor supporting role, but then starred in High Noon, in which she was cast as a mousey Quaker bride. She then appeared in Mogambo with Clark Gable, which won her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Her work in High Noon and a screen test for the film Taxi caught the attention of director Alfred Hitchcock, who molded Grace into his ideal of the elegant, beautiful blonde. She gave Hitchcock wonderful performances in Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief. But Grace went against Hitchcock's vision of her for the film The Country Girl, which won her the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role of 1954. The success of the song in this clip, True Love, performed by Grace and Bing Crosby, is from the film High Society, which earned her a gold record. In 1956, she was voted the Golden Globe's World Film Favorite Female Actor. In 1956, she married Prince Rainier Grimaldi III of Monaco to become Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco. Because of her royalty, she was forced to give up her successful acting career, in which she made eleven films. She had three children: Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. Grace died on September 14, 1982, after her car went off a road on the cliffs of Monaco. Rest in peace Grace, we'll never forget you.

Grace Kelly Both literally and metaphorically, Grace Kelly was the cinema's fairy-tale princess; beautiful, elegant, and impossibly glamorous. . .

REMEMBERING MAMA CASS ELLIOTT Dream a Little Dream Cass Elliot was born Ellen Naomi Cohen on Sept 19th 1941. Her restauranteur father nicknamed her'Cass' after the Trojan princess, Cassandra. She adopted the name Cass Elliot during her teens. The name Mama Cass evolved from her involvement with the Mamas and Papas. This is what John Phillips said about Cass in an interview in August 1995 at Paramount Studios: "Her father had a deli in New York. I remember her as a little, chubby girl, with the stained apron on, behind the counter. [Laughs] We were sort of infamous in that area, and when she got to New York, she knew who we were, but we didn't know who she was. And she had met Denny, and Denny said, "I know this girl that sings wonderfully. We should have her over and sing with her." It happened to be that LSD was actually legal at the time. It wasn't a banned drug or anything. We searched all over the Village and found some contemporary artist who had some and he gave it to us. We were about to take it that night, when the knock on the door came and Cass came in. So we all had it together the same night, for the first time, and I think that formed a bond between the four of us that we just never stopped singing. We just went on and on and on and on, until the trip wore off, which was about four years later." Cass Elliott died July 29, 1974. Contrary to what many people have been led to believe over the years, she did not choke on a sandwich. According to her doctor, the cause was heart failure.

Virginia Mayo Virginia Mayo is well-remembered for portrayals of Ladies and Princesses and other patrician, goody-two-shoes, blueblood types in comedies and song-and-dance movies. But when she went bad, she went all the way. In Raoul Walsh's WHITE HEAT, she was sleeping around, shooting mother-in-laws in the back, ready to rat out anybody or everybody, whatever would serve her purposes...

SNLs Coffee Talk With Mike Myers A Classic Linda Richman's (Mike Myers) hero was Barbra Streisand. She constantly "dedicated" the show to her, often claiming her to be the greatest actress in all of history. In what could be considered to be the sketch's most memorable moment, Myers was joined by two special guests Madonna and Roseanne Barr as two other Jewish women (and they were authentic, take my word!). They discussed Streisand's movie, The Prince of Tides, on the show. Near the end of the sketch, the women compared Barbra to "buttah"-and suddenly, a voice announced, "All this talk about food, I'm getting hungry, girls." It was Streisand herself in a surprise appearance; none of the actors had any idea that she was to appear. All three managed to remain in character as the audience went wild. Though Streisand only stayed long enough to give each character a kiss and wave to the audience, the moment has become one of the most memorable in the show's history.

Braveheart 1995 Putting politics and any media circuses aside, this was a great film from the 90's, based on the legend of William Wallace, who gained recognition when he came to the forefront of the First War of Scottish Independence by opposing Edward I of England and subsequently abetted by Edward's daughter-in-law Princess Isabelle and a claiment to the Scottish throne, Robert the Bruce.

American Bandstand 1952 to 1989 October 6th marks the first televised appearance of American Bandstand. I found some interesting trivia concerning the show. It was customary on AB to have Clark perform a mini-interview with the guest band members. Clark says the most difficult interview he performed was with Prince, an unknown at the time of his appearance. Prince was unresponsive and would generally answer his questions with only a hand gesture or a single word. Clark in fact asked Prince how many instruments he played, Prince responded with, "A thousand." Another famous mini-interview Clark is famous for is one with Madonna, who, when asked what she would like to do 20 years from now, answered coyly, "To rule the world!" B.B. King and Jerry Lee Lewis were the only recording artists to actually sing on the program. They were uncomfortable with miming their performances and requested that they just perform the songs live on the set. In 1961, Tony Orlando performed his then-hit song "Bless You" with his trousers zipper open!

Hollywoods Sex Goddess Rita Hayworth Rita Hayworth was born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn NY, on October 17, 1918. She found fame as an American actress during the 1940's as the era's leading sex symbol. Although there was prejudice against Hispanic actors at the time, she is now widely regarded to be one of the first Hispanic-American "sex goddess" of "Golden Age" Hollywood with leading roles in film. Rita left her film career in 1948 to marry Prince Aly Khan, the son of the Aga Khan, the leader of the Ismaili sect of Shia Islam. After the marriage collapsed in 1951, Rita returned to America to star in a string of hit films, Affair in Trinidad, Salome, and Miss Sadie Thompson. Then she was off the big screen for another four years, due mainly to a tumultuous marriage to singer Dick Haymes. In 1957 she starred in Fire Down Below. Her last musical was Pal Joey. She got good reviews for her acting in such films as Separate Tables, and The Story on Page One, and continued working throughout the 1960s. It was during that time that she suffered an early onset of Alzheimer's disease, which was not diagnosed until 1980. In 1964 she appeared with John Wayne in Circus World and in 1972 she made her last film, The Wrath of God. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease in 1987 at age 68.
