Keystone Cops The Keystone Cops were a regular feature in Mack Sennett's silent Keystone comedies. Their heyday was between 1912 and 1917. The ensemble that played the comical police force changed from film to film. (Many were per diem actors who remain unknown to this day.) Ford Sterling usually played the police chief. In this still photo silent screen buffs will recognize Roscoe Arbuckle and Edgar Kennedy.

Bill Barilko Mystery One of the oddest sports stories ever is the disappearance of Bill Barilko of the Toronto Maple Leafs. In the spring of 1951, Barilko became a Leafs hero when he scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal against the Montreal Canadiens. That summer, Barilko and a dentist friend, Dr. Henry Hudson, flew to northern Quebec in the dentist's private plane to do some fishing on the Seal River. For their return home, they loaded the plane's pontoons with 120 pounds of fish they had caught, took off for southern Ontario--and were not seen alive again. The RCMP began a huge search for the missing men. (Some thought the police's interest in the case was far beyond what might be expected.) Nearly eleven years passed before the plane's wreckage was discovered in a densely wooded area of northern Ontario. The skeletal remains of Barilko and Hudson were found in the plane. Oddly enough, the plane was facing the opposite direction one would expect--and the 120 pounds of fish were not found in the pontoons. One persistent and fascinating rumor insists that Barilko, who hailed from a gold-mining community, was using his dentist friend as a mule to move a significant quantity of gold nuggets and dust he had illegally obtained from the mine. (Since dentists need gold for fillings, they have connections with gold suppliers.) The plane's pontoons had mysteriously been sliced open.

Bernard Goetz Subway Vigilante Bernard (Bernhard) Goetz was riding a New York City subway train on December 22, 1984. Four black youths, aged 18 and 19, menacingly surrounded him and demanded money. Goetz, who had previously been mugged twice, opened fire with a small-calibre handgun. One shot severed the spinal cord of one of the assailants, permanently paralyzing him. The other three were less seriously wounded. Goetz fled the subway car but eventually turned himself into police nine days later. Dubbed the Subway Vigilante by New York's newspapers, Goetz was hailed as a hero by crime-weary New Yorkers after it was discovered the four youths all had long criminal records and admitted to being on their way to steal money from machines at a video arcade. (At the time, an average of 38 crimes were committed in the New York subway system each day!) Goetz was only convicted of a third-degree gun possession felony and served eight months in jail. The three able-bodied felons all committed serious crimes afterwards. One was sentenced to 25 years for raping and sodomizing a pregnant woman.

Before Britney No one is surprised that photographers are always there to document Britney's every move, but I wonder how this 1942 photo of Frances Farmer came to be. Did cops tip off the press in advance? Initially, Farmer was arrested by Santa Monica police for drunk driving. She got into a heated exchange with a cop before being dragged off to jail. By the time she was re-arrested for violation of parole, Farmer had dislocated a hairdresser's jaw, got into a late night bar brawl, and streaked topless through Sunset Strip. She signed "C@#ks*&ker" as her occupation at the Hollywood police station. there is nothing new in the world...
