Our Gang - Janet Burston The final leading lady of the Our Gang comedies was Janet Burston. She joined the troupe in 1940 as a five-year-old during the MGM era and stayed until the series meekly ran its course in 1944. After Darla Hood left in 1942, Burston became the Gang's female lead by default. She is pictured here in a scene circa 1942. Note that Spanky McFarland is still part of the Gang, as is Billie (Buckwheat) Thomas. That's young Robert Blake (who acted under the name of Mickey Gubitosi) on Burston's right. In the final movies of the series, Janet was the romantic interest of Froggy Laughlin (standing between Spanky and Buckwheat). Fans of the series often criticize Burston for her over-the-top acting. "Oh, I was a ham!" she said in an interview late in her life. "But that's the way they wanted it--the hammier, the better!" Burston didn't have much of a film career after her Our Gang days ended. Married four times, she died of cancer in 1998 at the age of 63.

It Happened One Night Walls of Jericho One of the great pictures of the early takies era was It Happened One Night (1934) starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Colbert plays a spoiled heiress who runs away from her domineering father to marry her playboy fiance. Gable plays a reporter who finds her. He arranges to help her in return for an exclusive story. This scene finds the two strangers sharing a motel cabin. Gable establishes his quaint version of the 'Walls of Jericho' to keep their arrangement platonic.

Walt Disney The Old Mill This is the '50s re-issue print of the Oscar-winning 1937 Silly Symphony, 'The Old Mill'. The original opening title featured a 'Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures, Inc.' credit. No matter though, the power and depth of the 'Multiplane' camera, demonstrated here, is still impressive, 70 years later.

The Beatles HEY JUDE This song, recorded by The Beatles in 1968, and originally titled 'Hey Jules', was written by McCartney to comfort John Lennon's son, Julian, during his parents' divorce. Julian discovered the song had been written for him almost twenty years later. He remembered being closer to McCartney than to his father: 'Paul and I used to hang about quite a bit more than Dad and I did. We had a great friendship going and there seems to be far more pictures of me and Paul playing together at that age than there are pictures of me and my dad.' Although McCartney originally wrote the song for Julian, John thought it had actually been written for him: 'I always heard it as a song to me. If you think about it... Yoko had just come into the picture. He's saying. 'Hey, Jude—Hey, John.' I know I'm sounding like one of those fans who reads things into it, but you can hear it as a song to me. Subconsciously, he was saying, 'Go ahead, leave me.' On a conscious level, he didn't want me to go ahead at all.'

Radio Contest Death On January 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three from Rancho Cordova, California pictured in the photo below, was found dead in her home by her mother. It was only a few hours after she had tried to win a Nintendo Wii game console on a radio contest. KDND 107.9 FM's Hold Your Wee for a Wii contest involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. The cause of Strange's death was determined to be a rare condition known as water intoxication--basically when too much water is consumed by a human being. Civil charges against the radio station were filed by Jennifer's family. They were eventually awarded $16.5 million in the ensuing wrongful death lawsuit. Everyone connected with the contest was fired from KDND. Oh, yeah...Strange did not win the contest.
