Bob Crane Show - 1975 This is the opening montage of The Bob Crane Show--a best-forgotten 1970s sitcom. Hoping for another hit sitcom after a terrific six-year run on Hogan's Heroes, in 1975 Bob Crane was cast by NBC as businessman Bob Wilcox who suddenly decides to make a radical life change and enroll in medical school. Trisha Hart played Bob's wife Ellie who became the family bread-winner. Erica Petal played their teenage daughter Pam. Despised by viewers and critics alike, The Bob Crane Show was a huge flop. Total Television calls the sitcom "insipid." It premiered on March 6, 1975 and was gone by June 19 after just 14 episodes. Crane blamed the show's failure on a lack of chemistry among the characters.

The Original Peter Pan Mary Martin It's 1955, you and your family are all seated around your brand new twelve inch color TV. Mom made snacks, which are sitting on top of TV trays, (all the rage). This is a momentous occasion. Tonight, you will witness a magical event, a live broadcast of Peter Pan, straight from Broadway. It has music, adventure and best of all it's in color thanks to the NBC peacock. The production also starred Cyril Ritchard as Hook, and Sondra Lee as Tiger Lily with Lynn Fontanne.

Remembering Mary Martin Although she did a few films early in her career, Mary Martin was generally passed over for the filmed version of the musical plays in which she starred. She once explained that she didn't enjoy making films, because she did not have the "connection" with an audience that she had in live performances. The closest she ever came to preserving her stage performances were her famous television appearances as Peter Pan (she had starred in a musical version on Broadway in 1954, and this production was subsequently performed on television in 1955, 1956 and 1960). While she didn't enjoy making theatrical films, she did apparently enjoy appearing on television, as she did frequently. She died, aged 76, from colorectal cancer in California on November 3, 1990. Here's a clip of Larry Hagman giving a wonderful speech in honor of, and to, his mother, during the Kennedy Center Honors in 1989.

Gene Pitney 24 Hours From Tulsa Gene Pitney passed away last April, 2006, of natural causes, he was 65, but he left a legacy of hits going back to the early 60's and had been touring for the last 40 years. His songs have been recorded by some of the world's biggest stars, Hello Mary Lou was released by Rick Nelson, Roy Orbison recorded Today's Teardrops as the B-side to his million-selling single, Blue Angel. He is also credited with helping the Rolling Stones break into the American market with his endorsement of the band. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote his hit That Girl Belongs to Yesterday which became the Stones duo's first composition to reach the American charts. Gene once recalled how his first solo performance at school degenerated into an embarrassing whimper as he was petrified by the expectant audience. Overcoming his nerves over the next few years, Pitney learned to play the guitar and piano and formed a schoolboy band. It was during one of their gigs that his distinctive voice was discovered by the proverbial "fat man with a cigar" who took him off to New York, and the rest was history.

Chicago Hard to Say Im Sorry 1982 The band began as a politically charged, sometimes experimental rock band and later moved to a softer sound, becoming famous for producing a number of hit ballads. They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Second only to the Beach Boys, Chicago, in terms of singles and albums, is one of the longest running and most successful U.S. pop/rock and roll groups. According to Billboard, Chicago was the leading U.S. singles charting group during the 1970s. In 1973 the group's manager, produced and directed Electra Glide in Blue, a movie about an Arizona motorcycle policeman. The movie starred Robert Blake, and featured Cetera, Kath, Loughnane, and Parazaider in supporting roles. The group also appeared prominently on the movie's soundtrack. 1978 was a tragic and transitional year for Chicago. The year began with an acrimonious split with long-time manager James William Guercio. Then, in late January, guitarist/singer/songwriter Terry Kath died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound (reportedly incurred while cleaning his gun), delivering a devastating blow to the band. Another version describes Kath's drunken last words to the band: "Don't worry, guys. It isn't even loaded. See?".

Americas Sweetheart at 61 Happy Birthday to Sally Field! Sally is the daughter of actress Margaret Field and step-father Jock Mahoney, also an actor as well as a stuntman. Sally managed to finish high school, but early on it was clear she would follow in her parents' footsteps, and she soon got the lead role in the 1965 TV series "Gidget", quickly followed by "The Flying Nun" which ran from 1967-1970. American was in love with her wholesome, girl-next-door persona. The role that got Sally noticed as a more serious dramatic actress, was her portrayal of the title character in the TV movie Sybil, a woman suffering from a multiple personality disorder. The part won her an Emmy in the Best Actress category in 1976. Hollywood now saw Sally Field as more than just a pretty face. She had raw talent they were more than happy to exploit. But Sally didn't altogether abondon her comedic side and proved this by starring opposite Burt Reynolds in the two Smokey And The Bandit films. Nevertheless, her best work came through in dramatic roles, and Sally went on to win Oscars in the Best Actress category for both Norma Rae and Places In The Heart. Aside from acting, she has also produced and directed several projects for television, including directing an episode of the acclaimed mini-series, From The Earth To The Moon. Sally has two sons from her first marriage, Peter and Eli. And Samuel, from her second marriage.

Undercover Putin Met President Reagan A picture has emerged apparently showing Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in his former days as a KGB officer. The 20-year old photo depicts two world leaders - US President Ronald Reagan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev - in Moscow. But, according to the man who took the photo, it also captures Mr Putin disguised as a tourist. Pete Souza, now President Obama's official photographer, captured the moment when he worked for President Reagan during the political thaw that soon ended the Cold War. Mr Reagan took a stroll around Red Square accompanied by the Russian leader, who then introduced him to a group of tourists. In an interview, Mr Souza recounted being surprised at the "pointed" questions these supposed tourists asked the US leader.
