Patsy became a legend, both with country and non country fans. She had a voice so strong and clear, I remember her making me cry more than once, and what a great yodeler! Like many musically gifted performers she died tragically, and too young. I often wonder what other music she would have given us if she hadn't left us so soon.

Marcel Marceau, who revived the art of mime and brought poetry to silence, has died, his former assistant said Sunday. He was 84.A French Jew, Marceau survived the Holocaust - and also worked with the French Resistance to protect Jewish children.
His biggest inspiration was Charlie Chaplin. Marceau, in turn, inspired countless young performers - Michael Jackson borrowed his famous "moonwalk" from a Marceau sketch, "Walking Against the Wind."

From a 1954 "General Foods" television special devoted to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. I remember sitting and watching this with my family as clear as if it were yesterday. These shows of Broadway stars were so popular in the early days of television that this special was broadcast simultaneously on all the networks.
Ezio Pinza, Italian-American bass, (born Fortunato (Ezio), Roma 1892 - died of a stroke, Stamford, Connecticut 1957)
A big star at the Metropolitan Opera house starting in 1926, he continued his career in films, TV and Broadway after he retired from the Met in 1948. Pinza created the part of Emile de Becque in the original Broadway production of "South Pacific". His performance of "Some Enchanted Evening" on the original Broadway cast album was a big hit, and introduced him to a mass audience.
From the time I was 4 yrs old I remember hearing the beautiful sounds of Ezio Pinza coming through my grandmother's old RCA Victrola. Some memories will never fade, no matter how old we get.

Although she did a few films early in her career, Mary Martin was generally passed over for the filmed version of the musical plays in which she starred. She once explained that she didn't enjoy making films, because she did not have the "connection" with an audience that she had in live performances. The closest she ever came to preserving her stage performances were her famous television appearances as Peter Pan (she had starred in a musical version on Broadway in 1954, and this production was subsequently performed on television in 1955, 1956 and 1960). While she didn't enjoy making theatrical films, she did apparently enjoy appearing on television, as she did frequently. She died, aged 76, from colorectal cancer in California on November 3, 1990. Bob Hope began entertaining troops in May of 1941, when Bob, with a group of performers, went to March Field, California, to do a radio show for airmen stationed there. He would continue that tradition through peacetime and wartime for another 60 years. On December 22, 1968, Bob's "Operation Holly" performed at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. This video records that event. The original film was silent, so the audio from his performance at Long Binh Army Depot that same Christmas has been dubbed onto the video.

Television shows like American Idol are hardly new. From 1947 thorugh 1970, Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour gave aspiring performers a chance to display their talents in front of a television audience. (Viewers were encouraged to vote for their favorite acts--by postcard!) This is a 1967 Ted Mack clip of eight-year-old Irene Cara singing.

Like most African-American performers of his generation, comic actor Dudley Dickerson played more than his fair share of Pullman porters, bell-boys, waiters, and shoe-shine boys. But from the late '30s until the mid-'50s, Dickerson was the most prominent black actor working in two-reel comedies. Contracted by Columbia's short subject department, the roly-poly supporting comic brought a refreshing energy to his portrayals of, yes, Pullman porters, shoe-shine boys, and the always demeaning "frightened Negro domestic." Closer in type to Mantan Moreland than Stepin Fetchit, Dickerson was especially good opposite Charley Chase in His Bridal Fright (1940) and the Three Stooges in A-Plumbing We Will Go (1940). Dickerson played a Pullman porter once again in his final film The Alligator People (1959), after which he concentrated on television work. The veteran comic died of cerebral thrombosis.
