Olympic Protocol Gaffe - Korean Flag Error When play began at the Olympic women's soccer tourney on July 25, 2012 a major protocol error gummed up the works: North Korea's women's soccer team refused to take the field for its first Olympics match after an enormous diplomatic faux pax. The flag of their neighbor and ideological enemy South Korea was displayed alongside the players' names on the scoreboard at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland instead of the North Korean flag. North Korea eventually played its match against Colombia, winning 2-0, but only after receiving permission from the office of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. The diplomatic kerfuffle began after team officials ordered the players back to their locker room, delaying the start of the game for more than an hour. They informed Olympic staff that no further action would be taken until guidance had been sought from North Korea's national soccer federation. That federation is officially headed by Kim Jong-un, the son of recently deceased leader Kim Jong-il. The level of control exerted by the North Korean government over every aspect of life in the country means that all major sporting decisions must be approved by the leadership. North Korea and South Korea are technically still at war. The "peace" to end the Korean War in 1953 is only an armistice--not an actual peace treaty. Organizers profusely apologized for the "human error." The mistake came, ironically, only a few days after British Olympic organizers guaranteed there would be no errors with flags, national anthems, and other areas of international protocol during the 2012 Games.

Peter OToole passes at age 81 Hollywood legend Peter O'Toole died peacefully in his sleep last night. Peter had been in countless films -- including "Lawrence of Arabia", "Goodbye, Mr Chips" and "Venus" -- and holds the record for most Oscar nominations without ever winning. WWII: Massacre at Oradour-Sur-Glane On June 10, 1944, four days after the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, German SS troops descended on a small, peaceful French village, Oradour-Sur-Glane, in which about 700 people lived. In a matter of a few hours, Oradour-Sur-Glane ceased to exist. Virtually every person who lived there was indiscriminately shot or burned alive. Every building was also destroyed. After the war, the French government decided to leave Oradour-Sur-Glane's ruins as they stood as a solemn reminder of the horrors of war.

Mercury Dimes The coin commonly referred to as the "Mercury dime" was a ten-cent coin struck by the United States Mint from 1916 to 1945. It is one of the great misnomers in numismatic history. Designed by Adolph Weinman, it is properly called the Winged Liberty dime, as the face depicts a female Liberty figure rather than the male god Mercury. It gained its wrong but commonly used name as the obverse depiction of a young Liberty, identifiable by her winged Phrygian cap, was confused with the Roman god Mercury. Weinman is believed to have used Elsie Stevens, the wife of lawyer and poet Wallace Stevens, as a model. The coin's reverse depicts a fasces, symbolizing unity and strength, and an olive branch, signifying peace. The value of each Mercury dime is more than $2 because of the current price of silver. The Roosevelt dime replaced it in 1946.

The Rutles Piggy In The Middle Many considered the Rutles' Tragical History Tour more tragic than historical. When it was broadcast on the CBC on April 1st, 1968, it was even shown upside-down. People didn't know what to make of it. I realize now that what the Rutles were saying is that we ourselves should be upside-down when we were watching it. Then it would all make sense. Hundreds of young people all over the world joined me in doing just that. We were all part of something special. In retrospect I think it was all about the peace movement. It's hard to fight when you're upside-down. Mind you, the movie still didn't make sense, but the music was amazing.
