Rebecca Schaeffer Murder 1989 Pretty Rebecca Schaeffer (pictured below) had an all-too-brief acting career. After she appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine, she landed the role of Patti Russell on the short-lived CBS sitcom My Sister Sam. (The show ran from October 1986 to November 1987). During the show's run, an obsessed fan, Robert John Bardo, began writing letters to Schaeffer which were answered by CBS employees. Bardo twice tried to see Schaffer on the set but was turned away by security. After the show was cancelled, Bardo found Schaeffer's home address with the help of a private investigator who, for a $250 fee, obtained the information from California's Department of Motor Vehicles. On July 18, 1989, Bardo knocked on Schaeffer's apartment door and had a brief conversation with the actress. She asked him not to return. A little while later Bardo did return and fatally shot Schaeffer in the chest after she opened the door. She was 21. Bardo was apprehended a short time later, quickly confessed, and was sentenced to life in prison. Schaeffer's murder led to the first anti-stalker legislation in California (which has been widely copied in many jurisdictions). Among the celebrities who have benefitted from it or similar laws have been David Letterman and Madonna. The state of California also toughened its security policies regarding residents' personal information.

Salvador Sanchez Had Mexico's Salvador Sanchez lived longer, he may have gone down as the greatest featherweight champion in boxing history. As an unheralded 21-year-old, Sanchez upset popular Danny Lopez to win the WBC version of the featherweight title on February 2, 1980. Combining punching power and boxing skill, Sanchez defeated all comers and became a fixture on network TV--a rarity for a Mexican fighter. He defeated Lopez in a rematch and a young Azumah Nelson, who would become a great champion himself. On July 21, 1982, Sanchez was killed in a single-vehicle automobile crash in Mexico. He was 23 years old. His pro record was 44-1-1.

Cynthia Lynn Lovely Cynthia Lynn (pictured here in a CBS publicity photo with Bob Crane) played Fraulein Helga, Colonel Klink's secretary, in the first season of Hogan's Heroes (1965-66). In the series' pilot episode, Helga unabashedly works with the prisoners to sabotage the German war effort. In the first season however, Helga only assists Hogan and his cronies with small favors usually paid for with bribes of luxury items. The next season, Lynn was suddenly replaced by Klink's new secretary, Fraulein Hilda, played by Sigrid Valdis (who later became Bob Crane's second wife!). Why was Lynn replaced? No one has ever satisfactorily answered that question for Hogan's Heroes buffs. One persistent rumor had Lynn engaging in an off-screen affair with the married Crane. When the romance became known, Lynn quit the show. Lynn did return a few times late in the show's run in bit parts.

Come Alive Pepsi Ad Campaign In the early 1970s, Pepsi-Cola introduced a new catch phrase to promote its product: 'Come Alive!' Not bad...until it was translated into some foreign-language markets. In Germany the phrase meant, 'Rise from the grave with Pepsi!' In China the phrase meant, 'Pepsi brings back your ancestors!'
