Dennis The Menace Today Best remembered for his lead role in the CBS television series Dennis the Menace. Chosen for the role by creator Hank Ketcham himself. Finding himself forever typecast as "Dennis the Menace," North quit acting and joined the Navy in the 1970s. He later served as a prison security guard in Florida. USS Forrestal Burns- July 29 1969 This is clipped from Trial by Fire: A Carrier Burns, a 1973 film produced by the United States Navy about the devastating 1967 fire aboard USS Forrestal off the coast of Vietnam. The film is unique in that it was produced from actual footage of the fire and emergency response efforts, both successful and unsuccessful, taken by on board cameras. Due to the first bomb blast killing nearly all of the specially trained firefighters on the ship, the remaining crew, who had no formal firefighting training, had to improvise. Though there were many firefighting tools available on the Forrestal, including emergency respirators, the general crew was not trained in their use and so were unable to use them correctly. In response to this tragedy, recommendations made were: development of a remote-control fire-fighting system for the flight deck, development of more stable ordnance, improvement in survival equipment, and increased training in emergency response and fire survival. This film has been used to teach new recruits firefighting and emergency response lessons learned in the mishap.

In Their Own Words In Their Own Words .. Remembering the Forgotten Theater of World War II The China - Burma - India Theater Throughout the history of the world, in times of peril and aggression, nations have called upon their military forces for defense against their enemies. Our country has been very fortunate for, whenever the men and women who comprise our Army, Navy, air forces and other services have been called upon; they have served their country bravely and faithfully, regardless of where they were sent or what they were asked to do. Many Americans remember their dedicated service and are appreciative of their performances, but, too soon after the danger is over, the services of these veterans fade into oblivion. 1st Lt. Three First World War Vets I found this remarkable photo on a British news website. It was taken today (November 11, 2008) at the British Armistice Day service in London. It shows three of the four surviving British First World War veterans. From left to right: 112-year-old Henry Allingham, 110-year-old Harry Patch, and 108-year-old Bill Stone. Allingham was an aviator, Patch was in the army, Stone was in the navy. (The fourth surviving veteran, 107-year-old Claude Choules, lives in Australia.)

1964 Notre Dame-Navy Game Here are the condensed highlights of the 1964 Notre-Dame-Navy game played at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. The game is noteworthy for two reasons: It featured a matchup of Navy QB Roger Staubach, the 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, and Notre Dame QB John Huarte, who would win the Heisman in 1964. The game was also noteworthy for being the first of Notre Dame's 43 consecutive wins over Navy.

USS America CV66 Last Cruise The third USS America (CV-66), formerly CVA-66, was a Kitty Hawk class supercarrier of the United States Navy that served from 1965 to 1996. She was the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Originally ordered as an Enterprise-class nuclear carrier, the ballooning costs of Enterprise during construction caused the cancellation of the nuclear CVAN-66 and her reordering as a conventionally-powered Kitty Hawk-class carrier. She would still be operational if it was a nuclear ship. She was decommissioned in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va on 9 August 1996.America was planned to be sold for scrapping. However, she was chosen to be a live-fire test and evaluation platform in 2005, to aid the design of future aircraft carriers. After the completion of the tests, America was sunk in a controlled scuttling on 14 May 2005 at approximately 11:30, although the sinking was not publicized until six days later. At the time, no warship of that size had ever been sunk, and effects were closely monitored; theoretically the tests would reveal data about how supercarriers respond to battle damage. The ship rests 16,860 ft. below the Atlantic Ocean surface, roughly 250 miles off the North Carolina coast

2009 Sikorsky Fallen Heroes Tribute It was an honor and a privilege to have been a part of Connecticut Fallen Heroes Memorial Tribute last Saturday, June 13,2009. This was a tough emotional video to begin with, but once I added the photos of the fallen heroes it personalized it and made it even more emotional.

Australian PM Vanishes - 1967 Harold Holt, the 58-year-old prime minister of Australia, who had been in office only 22 months, vanished while swimmiming in the ocean late in 1967. On the morning of Sunday, December 17, Holt together with friends Christopher Anderson, Jan Lee and George Illson and his two bodyguards, drove down from Melbourne to see the British yachtsman Alec Rose sail through Port Phillip Heads in his boat Lively Lady to complete a leg of his solo circumnavigation of the globe, which started and ended in England. Around noon, the party drove to one of Holt's favorite swimming and snorkelling spots, Cheviot Beach on Point Nepean near Portsea, on the eastern arm of Port Phillip Bay. Holt decided to go swimming, although the surf was heavy and Cheviot Beach was notorious for its strong currents and dangerous rip tides. Ignoring his friends' pleas not to go in, Holt began swimming, but soon disappeared from view. Fearing the worst, his friends raised the alarm. Within a short time, the beach and the water off shore were being searched by a large contingent of police, Royal Australian Navy divers, Royal Australian Air Force helicopters, Army personnel from nearby Point Nepean and local volunteers. This quickly escalated into one of the largest search operations in Australian history, but no trace of Holt was ever found. Two days later, the government made an official announcement that Holt was presumed dead. Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen was sworn in as caretaker Prime Minister until such time as the governing Liberal party could elect a new leader. There were many rumors surrounding Holt's strange death, including claims that he had committed suicide or faked his own death in order to run away with his mistress. The mystery became the subject of numerous urban myths in Australia, including persistent claims that he was kidnapped (or rescued) by a Chinese submarine, or the far-fetched claim that he had been abducted by a UFO.
