From February 22, 1953, the Five DeMarco Sisters team up to be the mystery challenger on What's My Line. (I must admit I had never heard of them. Apparently they were big on radio--especially Fred Allen's show.)

I just read a new twist on an old trick. This time they are using a Mystery Shopper ploy. Here is how they go:
You receive a check in the mail, often times a cashier's check that looks very real. It is always made out for a large amount, they tell you to cash it and send the difference back to them. The problem is the check will bounce, you will be liable for the money and penalties and you just mailed real money to the crooks. In this case they are send out $4,000 checks, telling you to spend $600 on start up expenses and a few test purchases. When you fill out the paperwork on this test you are to send them the $3,400 to them to see if you qualify as a mystery shopper.

She has always been one of my favorite actresses and I think she's one of the most underrated and overlooked actresses of her generation. Kim Novak was a unique phenomenon. As the last of the "manufactured" screen goddesses and Columbia's answer to Marilyn Monroe, Kim had a more refined sex appeal than the other blond goddesses of the 1950's. She radiated a kind of mystery that harked back to the days of Garbo and Dietrich. Onscreen Kim Novak seems distant, enigmatic, thoughtful and somehow sad. She has been referred to as the reluctant goddess, the melancholy blonde and the lavender blonde. The studio created the idea that lavender was Kim Novak's favorite color as part of her movie star image. However, I think the term Lavender Blonde fits Kim Novak - it sets her apart from the sunny Doris Day or the gilded Marilyn Monroe. Lavender is closer to blue - makes you think of Madeleine in Vertigo, lost in thought by the seashore.

This was the opening sequence for the final season of The Odd Couple (1974-75) Why this funny show isn't more widely shown in reruns is a mystery to me.

The classiest game show ever to grace the airwaves was What's My Line. On this June 21, 1959 episode Jack Benny is the mystery challenger. Hilarity ensues. Why can't TV be this good nowadays?

The original classic Sunday night version of What's My Line ended its run of more than 17 years and 876 shows on September 3, 1967. Everyone figured the final mystery guest would be a biggie. Some newspapers even speculated it would be President Lyndon Johnson. (Hence, Arlene Francis' question about being 'voted into office.') Instead host John Daly was himself the mystery guest! Quite a fitting conclusion, I'd say!

Red Skelton is the mystery guest on this WML episode from September 26, 1954. The rules at that time permitted a panelist to keep questioning a mystery guest until a negative response was given. Fred Allen keeps getting affirmative answers from Red. When it's obvious that Allen knows who the mystery guest is, he makes a classic remark.

Twenty-three-year-old Barbra Streisand is the mystery guest on this April 23, 1965 episode of What's My Line. Barbra was quite the looker in 1965!

The classy and lovable Jimmy Durante was a very unsuccessful mystery guest on this January 31, 1965 episode of What's My Line. His voice was just too recognizable! (Despite the reference to Durante's age, he would outlive three of the four panelists on this show.)

Baseball's greatest hitter appears as a mystery guest on What's My Line in 1954. How impressive would Ted Williams' stats be if he didn't miss six seasons serving two stints in the Marines? This man is an American hero.
