Sharon Tate i would much rather celebrate the life and beauty of Sharon Tate than focus on the terrible end of her life. . . she made just a few films during her brief career, including DON'T MAKE WAVES (1967; with Tony Curtis and Dave Draper), EYE OF THE DEVIL (1967; with Deborah Kerr),and my personal favorite VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1967; with Susan Hayward and Patty Duke), and THE WRECKING CREW (1969; with Dean Martin and Tina Louise). She was only 26 years old when she was murdered in August 1969. BEVERLY HILLBILLIES fans will recall Tate from her recurring role as Janet Trego from 1963 to 1965...

Leopold and Loeb murder case 1924 One of the most despicable murder cases in the twentieth century was that of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, residents of suburban Chicago, who murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks in 1924. Their motive: They wanted to kill for the thrill of it and commit the perfect crime. Both Leopold, age 20, and Loeb, age 19, were exceptionally brilliant students who considered themselves intellectual supermen. On May 21, 1924 they lured Bobby Franks (a distant relative of Loeb) into a rented car. Franks was bludgeoned with a chisel and suffocated with a sock. His body was dumped into a culvert in Gary, Indiana and doused with acid to make identification difficult. The culprits mailed a typed ransom note to Franks' parents indicating that Bobby had been kidnapped. However, Franks' body was found before any ransom could be paid. Also found near the body were a pair of eye glasses that fell from Loeb's pocket during the crime. The glasses were almost unique--only three pairs had been made by a certain optician--and they led the police to Loeb. The two young men, who were reputedly homosexual lovers, were questioned and their alibis discredited. Each eventually confessed his involvement in the crime, but insisted the other was responsible for the actual murder. They were brought to trial for murder and kidnapping. Their lawyer, the famous Clarence Darrow, entered pleas of guilty in order to avoid a jury deciding the twosome's fate--which likely would have been a death sentence. Instead Darrow argued with a judge to spare his guilty clients from the death penalty. Darrow gave a rousing 12-hour oration that spared his clients' lives. Instead Leopold and Loeb were each given life sentences plus 99 years. Loeb was murdered in prison in 1936. Leopold was pardoned in 1958 and died of a heart attack in 1971. Bobby Franks, often forgotten by history, remains 14 years old forever.

Was Dorothy Kilgallen Murdered Here's one for you conspiracy theorists to ponder: Was newspaper columnist Dorothy Kilgallen murdered? Famous for her role as a permanent panelist on the CBS show What's My Line? and for her Voice of Broadway entertainment/gossip column in the New York Journal American, Kilgallen often covered major news events--especially murder trials. She reported on the Sam Sheppard murder trial and the Lindbergh kidnapping case, among others. She also expressed serious doubts about the Warren Commission's investigation of JFK's murder. Kilgallen interviewed Jack Ruby in prison shortly before her death on November 8, 1965. Just hours after she had appeared live and quite chipper on What's My Line? from 10:30 to 11 p.m., the 52-year-old Kilgallen was found dead in her Manhattan home, fully clothed, sitting up on a bed in which she did not sleep still wearing the makeup and false eyelashes she had on the previous night. (Dorothy always removed her false eyelashes before retiring for the night.) A book she had finished reading months ago was on her bed. She needed glasses to read but her spectacles were nowhere near her. Although alcohol and barbiturates were found in her blood stream and a mysterious pink liquid in her stomach, Kilgallen's official cause of death was listed as undetermined. At least three different people in the household claim to have been the first to discover Dorothy dead on the bed: Her secretary, her hairdresser, and her maid. Reports of the time when Dorothy's body was discovered vary wildly--anywhere from about 10:30 a.m. to about 3 p.m. The coroner who did the paperwork was responsible for autopsies in Brooklyn--not Manhattan. Kilgallen's notes from her interview with Jack Ruby were never found--leading conspiracy theorists to wonder whether she had been silenced.

Ambrose Small Case 1919 One of the most intriguing missing persons cases is that of Toronto theatre magnate Ambrose J. Small. Small was last seen alive on December 2, 1919 after selling his theatre chain for $1 million--a fantastic sum in those days. He lunched with his wife Theresa at the King Edward Hotel, gave her the check to deposit in their bank account, bought some newspapers from a young street vendor--and vanished forever. Small's disappearance was not reported to the police by his wife for nearly two weeks, leading to speculation that she was involved. Theresa was well known in Toronto for her charitable deeds and was used to Ambrose vanishing without warning for extended periods while away on gambling binges. To spare Theresa embarrassment, the Toronto Police did not formally announce Small was missing until his disappearance was reported in the Toronto Star in January 1920. Small had made his fortune in the theatre business staging low-brow plays often with risque themes. After his disappearance it was discovered that Small had a secret 'love nest' above his Grand Opera House in Toronto where he often 'entertained' chorus girls. Not long after Small vanished, his bookkeeper John Doughty vanished too with $105,000 in bonds taken from Small's safe deposit box. Doughty was later found in Oregon and arrested for theft. He was given a five-year prison sentence. Despite international headlines and a $50,000 reward, no trace of Small was ever found. An elderly Grand Opera House employee claimed to have overheard a violent argument between Small and Doughty on the afternoon Small vanished. The case was officially closed by Toronto police in 1960. Modern investigators recently found a memo written by an investigating officer in 1936, a year after Theresa died. The memo stated there was ample evidence that Ambrose Small had been murdered and that both Theresa Small and John Doughty were guilty of the crime--indicating that the Toronto Police were somehow involved in a major cover-up. The ghost of Ambrose Small is said to haunt one of his old theatres in London, Ontario.

Canadians at Hong Kong 1941 This is the tail end of an excellent Canadian documentary about the defense of Hong Kong in 1941. In December 1941, some 2,000 green Canadian troops were sent to bolster the exotic British outpost against an expected Japanese attack. It was a suicide mission. The Japanese attacked with about 90,000 battle-hardened troops. The heroic defense of Hong Kong lasted about three weeks before the inevitable surrender. Japanese troops brutally murdered wounded hospitalized defenders. Captured Canadian and British troops were shipped to slave labor camps where they existed in horrid conditions for nearly four years. Lest we forget...

Documents and Other Evidence from JFK Assassination Plot Revealed Today Brass knuckles and a pistol holster that were in Jack Ruby's possession at the time of his arrest after he murdered Lee Harvey Oswald were presented along with other historical documents and memorabilia connected to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy during a press conference in Dallas today. Long-hidden items and documents related to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy were revealed for the first time after spending nearly two decades locked inside a courthouse safe. Dallas County DA Craig Watkins presented the articles at a Presidents' Day news conference while standing next to brown and white file boxes stacked in a pyramid. The items include a purported transcript between Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Oswald's killer, nightclub owner Jack Ruby; a leather gun holster that held the weapon Ruby used to shoot Oswald; brass knuckles found on Ruby when he was arrested; and a movie contract signed by then-Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade. Watkins said investigators told him about the contents of the blue, two-door safe shortly after he took office in 2007. 'And every DA up until the new administration decided that they wanted to keep it secret,' he said. But he decided 'this information was too important to keep secret.' One of the most intriguing items was the typed transcript of an alleged conversation between Oswald and Ruby. The transcript - which hasn't been examined by experts and has already been called farfetched by some - includes talk of killing the president at the behest of the Mafia.

Stella Walsh Gender Controversy Stella Walsh was one of the first female Olympic heroes--but she could never shake the accusations that she was really a man. The masculine-looking Walsh was born in Poland in 1911 and came to the United States before her first birthday. Naturally gifted at sports, she won track and field contests sponsored by a Cleveland newspaper that were supposed to lead to a place on the 1928 American Olympic team. However, the immigration laws of the era said Walsh could not become an American citizen until the age of 21. She toured her homeland in the early 1930s and became hugely popular. She competed for Poland at the 1932 summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won gold in the women's 100 metres. At the 1936 Olympics she finished second to Helen Stephens, who, ironically, had to undergo a medical examination to prove she was a female. In November 1980, television station WKYC was heavily criticized for airing a story that questioned Walsh's gender. A month later the 69-year-old Walsh was murdered in a botched armed robbery at a Cleveland mall. Through a court order, WKYC obtained the coroner's report to vindicate their earlier claims. It said Walsh had male sex organs, no female sex organs, and both XX and XY pairs of chromosomes.
