Upstairs, Downstairs was a BAFTA and Emmy award-winning British drama set in a large townhouse in Edwardian London that depicted the lives of the servants "downstairs" and their masters "upstairs". It ran on ITV for five series from 1971 to 1975. First shown in the US in 1974.
Upstairs, Downstairs attempted to portray life in a high-status house set against the events of early 20th century. Great events are featured prominently in the episodes but minor or gradual changes are noted as well. It stands as a document of the social and technological changes that occurred between 1903 and 1930. The lives of the servants are integral to the story.

Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia on Nov 12, 1929. As a young child, Grace decided she wanted to become an actress, and studied acting (primarily theater) at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and worked as an actress and model in New York before moving to Hollywood. When she was in New York, Grace promoted Old Gold cigarettes and appeared on the covers of magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Redbook. Grace debuted in the film 14 Hours, in a minor supporting role, but then starred in High Noon, in which she was cast as a mousey Quaker bride. She then appeared in Mogambo with Clark Gable, which won her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. Her work in High Noon and a screen test for the film Taxi caught the attention of director Alfred Hitchcock, who molded Grace into his ideal of the elegant, beautiful blonde. She gave Hitchcock wonderful performances in Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and To Catch a Thief. But Grace went against Hitchcock's vision of her for the film The Country Girl, which won her the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role of 1954. The success of the song in this clip, True Love, performed by Grace and Bing Crosby, is from the film High Society, which earned her a gold record. In 1956, she was voted the Golden Globe's World Film Favorite Female Actor. In 1956, she married Prince Rainier Grimaldi III of Monaco to become Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco. Because of her royalty, she was forced to give up her successful acting career, in which she made eleven films. She had three children: Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. Grace died on September 14, 1982, after her car went off a road on the cliffs of Monaco.

"Every Woman in the World"
The duo of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met in May of 1975 while performing in the Australian production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Their 1980 album, Lost in Love, contained three U.S. Top Five singles, including the title track, plus "Every Woman In The World" and "All Out of Love" (sample). The album sold two million copies in the U.S. The following year they released "The One That You Love" and the title song was released as a single and went number #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart. It also featured two other Top 10 hits, "Here I Am" and "Sweet Dreams". Their third album, in 1982, "Now & Forever", continued the group's popularity with the Top 10 hit, "Even The Nights Are Better" and two top 40 singles "Young Love" and "Two Less Lonely People In The World". However, Air Supply wasn't finished yet. In spite of the somewhat declining popularity of "Now & Forever" compared with previous releases, the next year would prove very big for the band. in 1983, they released their "Greatest Hits" album with a new single called
"Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" written by Jim Steinman. The song was one of their biggest hits ever spending three weeks at number 2 and the album eventually sold 5 million copies. Air Supply released their first live video, Air Supply Live in Hawaii. In 1985, they had one semi-major Billboard hit with "Just as I Am" and a couple of very minor hits. Russell and Hitchcock recorded a 1987 Christmas album before taking a break from studio recordings. During this time, Russell Hitchcock released his self-titled in 1988 which was not a big seller. However, he did have the single "Swear To Your Heart" in 1990 from the movie soundtrack for "Arachnophobia" which received a lot of airplay.

And you thought those people that set up a room full of dominos to knock over were amazing... believe it or not, just unbelievable!! When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation, including the costs. There are six, and only six, hand-made Honda Accords in the world. To the horror of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make this film. There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time, exactly as you see it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again.
The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. The film cost six million dollars and took three months to complete including full engineering of the sequence. In addition, it is two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a lifetime. Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars. And how about those funky windshield wipers...?? At a cost of $6.2 million for 90-sec commercial, this is the world's costliest ad and hands down winner in the world of ads.

One of the most famous trials in American history was the Scopes trial of 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee. John T. Scopes, a young science teacher, was charged with violating the Butler Act, a state law that prohibited the teaching of evolution. Scopes was quickly relegated to a minor character in the trial as the two lawyers took center stage. Civil liberties groups hired famed defense lawyer Clarence Darrow (on the left) to represent Scopes. The prosecution obtained the services of former presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan (right), a renowned creationist and famous orator. The highlight of the trial occurred when Darrow called Bryan to testify as an expert on the Bible. Scopes was eventually found guilty and fined $100. The conviction was later overturned on a paperwork technicality. (Scopes was not at school on the day cited in the charges.) Nevertheless, the Butler Act remained on the books in Tennessee until 1976. The trial inspired the movie Inherit The Wind.

Longtime "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek was hospitalized Tuesday after a minor heart attack, a spokesman for the game show said.

Trebek, 67, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center late Monday night and was expected to remain there about two days for tests and observation, said show spokesman Jeff Ritter.
"Thankfully it was a minor heart attack," Ritter said. He did not give other details.

Evelyn Nesbit was a beautiful teenage model at the turn of the twentieth century. She supported herself and her widowed mother by posing for various artists and photographers. Her good looks won her a job as a Broadway chorus girl. This photo of her was taken in 1901 when Evelyn was 16. That same year she caught the eye of renowned architect and womanizer Stanford White--who was 47. White was married, but he often 'befriended' attractive teenage girls. Because of White's wealth and prestige, Evelyn's mother encouraged the relationship. White often 'entertained' young female friends in his lavish tower apartment at Madison Square Garden (which he designed). In the apartment were numerous strategically positioned mirrors and a red velvet swing. White apparently derived much pleasure watching his nubile young ladies cavort on it. According to Nesbit, White took advantage of her one night in the apartment after getting her to pose for suggestive photos in a yellow silk kimono and plying her with champagne. After deflowering Nesbit, White lost interest in her. Nesbit later became involved with Harry Thaw, the son of a Pittsburgh coal and railroad tycoon. Thaw himself was a possessive, sexual sadist who often beat Evelyn. Nevertheless, the two were married in 1905. Thaw became obsessed with Evelyn's stories about White. On June 25, 1906, Evelyn and Harry had two chance encounters with White. The first was at a cafe. The second was at a theatrical performance at Madison Square Garden's roof theatre. Thaw, who always carried a pistol, fired three shots into White's face at close range, killing him instantly. He is said to have shouted, 'You ruined my wife!' Thaw was tried twice for White's murder. The first trial ended with a deadlocked jury. At the second trial Thaw pled temporary insanity. Thaw's mother encouraged Evelyn to testify that White had raped her and Harry shot White to avenge her honor. Evelyn was supposed to get a quickie divorce and $1 million from the Thaw family. The divorce was granted, but Evelyn never got a penny. She was a minor celebrity for a few years and vanished into obscurity. She died in 1967 at the age of 82. Thaw was institutionalized until 1915 and died in 1947. Late in her life Nesbit claimed that Stanford White was the only man she ever truly loved. The story of the scandal was made into a 1955 movie starring Joan Collins titled The Girl In The Red Velvet Swing.
