Worzel Gummidge the TV series Worzel Gummidge, started in 1979,he is a scarecrow, and his love Aunt Sally, a life-size wooden fairground doll, both of whom can walk and talk and pass themselves off as human. The only people in on their secret are a couple of children, John and Susan. The Crowman, who created Worzel, also provided him with a set of different heads for different tasks: a thinking head, a brave head, a counting head and a clever head.

Eddie Gaedel Midget Pinch Hitter Probably my favorite sports story is the day a midget, Eddie Gaedel, batted in a major league game. The date was August 19, 1951. The lacklustre St. Louis Browns were hosting the Detroit Tigers in a Sunday doubleheader. Browns' owner Bill Veeck promised that anyone who bought a ticket would see a memorable sight. He was right. Gaedel, all 3'7" of him, took part in a brewery promotion between games. Gaedel, clad it a batboy's uniform bearing the number 1/8 and carrying a toy bat, made baseball history in the first inning of the second game when he batted for outfielder Frank Saucier. Bob Cain, the Detroit pitcher, nearly doubled over in laughter at the sight of Gaedel and walked him on four pitches--all of them high. Once Gaedel trotted down to first base he was replaced by pinch runner Jim Delsing. Gaedel's picture appeared in virtually every newspaper in North America the next day. That same day American League president Will Harridge banned midgets from baseball. Most of the players involved in the stunt relished their connection to it. Jim Delsing said, 'A lot of guys have hit 50 home runs in a season, but I'm the only guy who ever ran for a midget.'

Ann Meyers Ann Meyers made sports history in 1979 when she inked a deal with the Indiana Pacers, becoming the first female NBA player. She didn't last long. She was cut before the regular season started. Her signing was widely considered to be a publicity stunt. Red Auerbach of the Boston Celtics commented, 'I know Annie, and she's a nice girl, but this is reminiscent of Bill Veeck signing that midget.'

The Terror of Tiny Town One of Hollywood's true curiosities was The Terror of Tiny Town (1938)--an all-midget musical western! The cowboys ride Shetland ponies and enter the saloon by walking under its swinging doors! Many of the cast members would also play Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz in 1939.

Freaks Movie Trailer - 1932 This is a contemporary trailer created for the cult classic film Freaks long after its original 1932 release. This Tod Browning film is set in a circus sideshow and centers around the camaraderie of the "freaks"--and uses real carnival sideshow performers. The plot has two able-bodied members of the circus plotting to poison a midget to gain his inheritance. Originally planned for 94 minutes, it was cut to about an hour after very bad test screening results. (One woman claimed to have suffered a miscarriage from viewing the film.) It was a box office disaster in 1932--losing about $150,000. In the United Kingdom, Freaks was considered so shocking that it was banned for 30 years. The film was rediscovered by horror buffs in the 1960s. Shown at special midnight screenings, it developed an appreciative audience and has become a celebrated film.

Odd Couple - Family Portrait Scene From a December 1972 episode of The Odd Couple (titled "The Odd Father), Felix takes daughter Edna to the home of clients so she can see him in action as a professional photographer and be his assistant. The unexpected size of the parents in the family portrait leads to some comic scenes--especially the last gag.
