Nat Pendleton was nearly forty years old when he made this film in 1935. He is portraying the internationally famous Victorian "strong man" Eugen Sandow, a pioneer in physical education. A hundred years ago, photographs of the nearly-naked Sandow sold by the millions. It was a logical role for Pendleton, whose career relied on the roles of cop, officer, boxer, wrestler, driver, goon, gunman, gangster and oaf. He had played this same type role (named MacHardie) in the Marx Bros. film 'Horse Feathers' (1932). A native of Iowa, Pendleton graduated Columbia University in New York in 1916. In 1914 and 1915 he was Champion of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association in the 175 pound category. In the wrestling field he earned the Silver Medal for the U.S. in the 1920 Olympic games in Antwerp. Before entering a film career, he was a sports manager in New York. His manager in these scenes is William Powell, as Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., and the fawning dowager is played by the prolific "stout" character actress Grace Hayle.

On April 21, 1980 unheralded Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line in the prestigious Boston Marathon. Her apparent victory in record time was immediately suspicious. First, everyone assumed Jacqueline Gareau was the leading female. Nobody saw Gareau lose the lead in the race at anytime after the eighth mile. Furthermore, Ruiz's running shoes were barely scuffed and she was hardly perspiring in the unseasonably warm weather. Two Harvard University students signed affidavits stating they saw Ruiz illegally enter the course just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Ruiz denied the accusations and maintained she had run unnoticed among a pack of male runners. Few people believed her story and she was subsequently disqualified after an investigation. To this day Ruiz has stubbornly refused to return her winner's medal, so Gareau was given a larger medal. Twenty five years later Gareau was ceremoniously allowed to break the tape--a thrill that Ruiz deprived her from experiencing in 1980. Ruiz had qualified to run in Boston by finishing the 1979 New York City Marathon with a decent time, but investigators discovered she had cheated there too. (She left the course after a few hundred yards, took a subway train to an area near the finish line, illegally re-entered the race and finished 26th.) Ruiz promised to prove her innocence by winning the 1980 New York City Marathon. She never showed up.

It was one of the greatest moments in American sports history--but very few Americans saw it when it actually happened. The 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team was made up of college players. (North American professionals were ineligible until 1998.) The Soviet Union's state-sponsored "amateurs" had dominated Olympic hockey, winning gold medals in 1956, 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. In an exhibition game prior to the 1980 Olympics, the USSR manhandled the awe-struck Americans 11-1 at Madison Square Garden. However, in the medal round of the Lake Placid Olympics, the Americans pulled off an enormous upset, beating the mighty Soviets 4-3. Only those Americans who lived close enough to the Canadian border to pick up CTV's feed actually saw the game live. ABC only showed a tape-delayed broadcast later that evening. (ABC did not want to deprive soap opera fans from seeing General Hospital that day!) Watch the last 90 seconds of the game and listen as a young Al Michaels makes his famous call: 'Do you believe in miracles? Yes!' Two days later the Americans defeated Finland for the gold medal.

I only put this up for people that went to NYC to jar their memory.When they crossed the street, they stopped to let by, what they thought was some nut ready to hit them. 1st way to spot a tourist,and afterwards they probally saw something they thought wasn't possible on a bike!Because you threw their timing off.When in fact they have your walking pace timed for an opening between your legs if they could fit!My heroes! In my early 20's I road raced hoping for a career,found out I was average.In my late 20's I lived across the river in Bayonne took my bike over on the commuter ferry for a job interview for messenger.So before I went I fueled up (too much) to "show em' my stuff!" Never made it;Good thing because you need total focus and concentration.Besides playing & listining to music and riding like this. Nothing has given me this rush of adrenaline and dopamine.A silver medal in the olympics was won by a messenger,they mainly use track bikes with no brakes,hold on to cabs, cabbies don't mind. For that slingshot effect.And when I found out in the 80's they could make as much as $800.00 a wk. I hopped on the ferry.

American sprinter Marion Jones 'won' the women's 100 metres at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Trouble was she was doped up on illegal steroids. Drug testing didn't catch her, but Jones later admitted to doping and returned her five Olympic medals from Sydney. On January 11, 2008 she was sentenced to six months in the sneezer for lying under oath.

These are the final two round of the gold medal boxing match in the light heavyweight divison of the 1960 Rome Olympics. Cassius Clay of the United States outpoints Poland's Ziggy Pietrzykowski. I wonder whatever became of that Clay fellow.

Anyone else remember heavyweight boxer Duane Bobick? He was a bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He won his first 38 pro fights and was thought to be the next Great White Hope. Then Bobick faced Ken Norton in Madison Square Garden on May 11, 1977 in a bout televised by NBC. With 42 million people watching, disaster...
