Jack Johnson World Heavyweight Champion The first black boxer to hold the world heavyweight title was Jack Johnson of Galveston, Texas. Johnson held the crown from 1908 through 1915. A superb defensive fighter, he would sometimes go through several rounds without his opponent landing a meaningful punch. When he beat Canada's Tommy Burns for the title in Australia in 1908, correspondent Jack London wrote, 'Not one second of any round could legitimately be scored for Burns.' Johnson so outclassed his opposition that his title reign inspired the Great White Hope movement in America to find someone with the proper pigmentation to beat him. Nat Fleischer, who edited The Ring magazine from 1922 through 1972, rated Johnson as the greatest heavyweight ever.

Sugar Ray Leonard One of my all-time favorite boxers, Sugar Ray Leonard, is featured on the cover of a 1979 issue of The Ring magazine. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a renaissance in the sweet science. Leonard's skill and popularity were major reasons.

Confidential Magazine i remember my best girlfriend's grandmother laying on the couch reading Confidential Mmagazine and smoking Pall Mall cigaretes. we were too young at the time to know what the magazine was about, but knew it was bad (not compared to what's out there today) as it came in a brown envelope delivered to her gram's house.

First SI Swimsuit Issue The January 20, 1964 edition of Sports Illustrated was the first time the magazine featured swimsuit-clad beauties. The cover model, 21-year-old Babette March, looks positively Victorian compared to cover girls of recent years. (In case you're wondering, Babette's wearing a leather bikini!)

William F Buckley Jr Dies at 82 William F. Buckley Jr., the erudite Ivy Leaguer and conservative herald who showered huge and scornful words on liberalism as he observed, abetted and cheered on the right's post-World War II rise from the fringes to the White House, died Wednesday. He was 82. Editor, columnist, novelist, debater, TV talk show star of "Firing Line," harpsichordist, trans-oceanic sailor and even a good-natured loser in a New York mayor's race, Buckley worked at a daunting pace, taking as little as 20 minutes to write a column for his magazine, the National Review.

Vietnam Casualties One Week To show the human cost of the Vietman War, the January 21, 1972 issue of Life magazine printed the photos of every American solder who was killed there during the space of a week in 1971. I've often wondered what the public response would have been if Life had done something similar during the Second World War when an average of 1600 Americans were killed in action every week.
