Red Wings vs Prisoners - 1954 While occasional outdoor games have been all the rage in the NHL since 2003, the first known outdoor game played by an NHL team occurred on Tuesday, February 2, 1954 when the Detroit Red Wings played a team comprised of inmates from Marquette Branch Prison. The correctional facility in the state's upper peninsula housed some of the toughest convicts in Michigan. Most were confined to their cells 23 hours per day. Red Wings owner Jack Adams surprisingly agreed to the game--some say it was a personal favor for some notable inmates. A few Red Wings initially feared for their personal safety, but the warden assured them they were in no danger. "We were told we'd be special guests," recalled Ted Lindsay. "The inmates were looking forward to it. If anyone tried to harm us, he'd be dead in two minutes." The prisoners were put to work make to make a viable outdoor rink inside the prison walls. The weather cooperated nicely, with 22-degree Fahrenheit temperatures and no wind, which made the natural ice perfect. Several Red Wings said the ice surface was better than was what found in some NHL buildings. The game was not even close to being competitive. After the Red Wings jumped out to an 18-0 lead after the first period, the score was no longer kept. Several Red Wings joined the prison team for the final two periods to make things a little bit more competitive. Nevertheless, the prisoners presented the victorious Red Wings with a bucket modified to look like a trophy as a memento of their visit and easy triumph. Detroit would win a more substantial trophy--the Stanley Cup--that spring.

Tammy Grimes Show 1966 Frank's comment about ABC's 1966-67 schedule made reference to the short-lived Tammy Grimes Show. Here is a black-and-white version of the first 10 minutes of the first episode. Broadway star Tammy Grimes played madcap, free-spending bank heiress Tamantha Ward. Dick Sargent (later to be the second Darrin on Bewitched) played her brother, Terence. Only 10 episodes were ever made, and only four were aired before the series was axed. The Tammy Grimes show was produced by William Dozier, the man responsible for making Batman a huge hit on ABC. The network hoped Dozier could strike gold again with The Tammy Grimes Show. It didn't happen. Slotted against My Three Sons and Star Trek, poor ratings and negative reviews quickly killed this show.

The Pruitts Of Southampton starred Phyllis Diller A 1966 "zany" sitcom, "The Pruitts Of Southampton" starred the mad cap Phyllis Diller! Unfortunately low ratings forced ABC to retool the show and in January 1967 the show was re-titled "The Phyllis Diller Show" and moved it from Tuesday's at 9pm to Friday's at 9:30pm! I guess the damage was done because by the end of the season the "Pruitts" were cancelled:-( Silly sitcom yes, but no sillier than The Lucy Show over on CBS! BTW the exterior shot of the Pruitts home is actually the Biltmore Estate in NC!

The Exorcist Father Merrin Arrives The triva picture of Father Merrin arriving to perform an exorcism just doesn't do it justice so I made a quick video of it since I have the movie in digital format. The scene in the movie doesn't have the song "Tubular Bells" playing during the scene but I added it for effect! In the scene you'll see "Regan" or should I say the "Demon" realizing Father Merrin has been summond and also knows when he arrives. About 1 minute long....

Howard Cosell Muhammad Ali Montage Here's a montage of video moments featuring the unique interaction between Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali. (It was done in 1992 to celebrate Ali's 50th birthday, but the clips span several decades; I listed it in the 1970s because that's when I best remember watching Cosell interview Ali.) The ending is surprisingly touching.

Me and Little Andy Dolly's song "Me and Little Andy." Does anyone else remember this? Everyone I talk to has no idea what song I was talking about. I remember this from when I was little and it obviously made a lasting impression. I apologize for the really sad post.

Eiffel Tower Jump 1912 I haven't seen this clip in years! On February 4, 1912, an Austrian tailor named Franz Reichelt decided to test a homemade parachute by jumping off the Eiffel Tower. A camera crew was there to film the event.
