Cheap Trick Surrender 1978 Budokan brings success: 19781981 Not one of Cheap Trick's first three albums made it into the Top 40 in the United States. In Japan, however, all three albums became gold records. When Cheap Trick went to Japan to tour the country for the first time, in 1978, they were received with a frenzy reminiscent of Beatlemania. During this tour, on April 28, 1978, Cheap Trick recorded a live show for their loyal Japanese fans at the Nippon Budokan. When that show was released as a live album titled At Budokan in 1979, their American obscurity changed for good. In Japan, they have remained popular superstars, even to the present day, and in fact, have been often referred to in the Japanese press as the "American Beatles". At Budokan launched Cheap Trick into international stardom. Initially intended for release in Japan only,[3] the album went triple platinum in the United States and reached #26 on the Swedish music charts. The smash track was the live version of "I Want You to Want Me", a song originally released on In Color. It reached #7, and "Ain't That A Shame" peaked at #35.

We Missed Allan Melvin Passing aka Sam The Butcher Some how we missed Allan Melvin's passing back in January. A character actor best known for playing Sam the Butcher on "The Brady Bunch," has died. He was 84. Melvin died of cancer Thursday at his home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles, said Amalia Melvin, his wife of 64 years. The jowly, jovial Melvin spent decades playing a series of sidekicks, second bananas and lovable lugs, including Archie Bunker's friend Barney Hefner on "All in the Family," and Sgt. Bilko's right-hand man Cpl. Henshaw on the "Phil Silvers Show." But his place in pop culture will be fixed as butcher and bowler Sam Franklin, the love interest of Brady family maid Alice Nelson, who was played by Ann B. Davis. Melvin played the role from 1970 to 1973. Born in Kansas City, Mo., in 1923, Melvin grew up in New York and attended Columbia University. He was appearing on Broadway in "Stalag 17" when he began his decades-long television career with "The Phil Silvers Show," playing a role his wife said was always his favorite. "He was proudest of that show," Amalia Melvin said. "I think the camaraderie of all those guys made it such a pleasant way to work. They were so relaxed." He saw steady employment as a voice actor from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, most famously providing the voice of "Magilla Gorilla" for the Hanna Barbera cartoon of the same name. His other credits include several guest appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire 1911 On March 25, 1911, 146 employees of the Triangle Shrtwaist Company in New York City--mostly female Jewish immigrants--perished when fire engulfed their factory. Death came in many hideous ways: Some workers were trampled to death in the panic. Others suffocated on the smoke-filled ninth floor. More than 50 chose to jump to their deaths rather than burn once they discovered the emergency doors had been locked by their employer to keep them from leaving work early. Though nearly forgotten today, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire was responsible for many fire safety regulations and labor laws that exist today.

Ebbets Field Perhaps the most nostalgic ballpark of them all was Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, home of the National League's Dodgers for 45 seasons. Built in 1913, it was one of the era's new concrete and steel stadiums. It held 32,000 of baseball's most loyal and colorful supporters. Brooklyn fans witnessed some of the worst baseball ever played in the National League--and some of the very best. Despite consistently strong fan support since 1890, after the 1957 season owner Walter O'Malley ripped the heart out of the borough by uprooting the Dodgers and moving the club 3,000 miles away to Los Angeles. Most Brooklynites would have preferred seeing the Brooklyn Bridge dismantled rather than lose their beloved baseball club.

Room 222 Promo remember this show? . . . the series focused on an American History class at Walt Whitman High School in Los Angeles, though it also covered other events at the school. The class, Room 222, was taught by Pete Dixon (Lloyd Haynes), an idealistic African-American teacher. Other characters featured in the show were guidance counselor Liz McIntyre (Denise Nicholas), who was also Pete's girlfriend; the principal, Seymour Kaufman (Michael Constantine) and fidgety, somewhat "wacky" Alice Johnson (Karen Valentine) as a student teacher. . . Cliffy posted a clip of this in color, but i like this one too, in black and white and with Dudley Doright!!
