Born Sofia Villani Scicolone, in Rome Italy on September 20, 1934. An illegitimate child from a poor home in Naples, she became a teenage beauty queen and model. Her film debut was as an extra. She came under contract to film producer Carlo Ponti, later her husband, and blossomed as an actress. An international career followed and she won an Oscar for La Ciociara, (1961, translation Two Women). Frequently appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, her many films include The Millionairess (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964). In 1979 she published Sophia Loren: Living and Loving (with A E Hotchner) which was filmed for television as Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980), in which she played herself and her mother. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991.
How she stays so gorgeous is anyone's guess, but being Sicilian myself, I would be willing to bet there's something in the olive oil, no kidding. In any case, I better get me a few barrels of it lol

Nat Pendleton was nearly forty years old when he made this film in 1935. He is portraying the internationally famous Victorian "strong man" Eugen Sandow, a pioneer in physical education. A hundred years ago, photographs of the nearly-naked Sandow sold by the millions. It was a logical role for Pendleton, whose career relied on the roles of cop, officer, boxer, wrestler, driver, goon, gunman, gangster and oaf. He had played this same type role (named MacHardie) in the Marx Bros. film 'Horse Feathers' (1932). A native of Iowa, Pendleton graduated Columbia University in New York in 1916. In 1914 and 1915 he was Champion of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association in the 175 pound category. In the wrestling field he earned the Silver Medal for the U.S. in the 1920 Olympic games in Antwerp. Before entering a film career, he was a sports manager in New York. His manager in these scenes is William Powell, as Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., and the fawning dowager is played by the prolific "stout" character actress Grace Hayle.

Florence Lawrence was America's first big movie star--but no one knew her name. During the first decade of the twentieth century, movie companies did not publicize their actors' names in order to keep their salaries down. Florence Lawrence made dozens of films for D.W. Griffith's Biograph Company and became the studio's most noteworthy star. Nevertheless she remained anonymous. Known to her fans only as 'the Biograph girl,' she was earning just $25 per week. When she left Biograph in 1910 to join the newly formed IMP company, her new studio started a false rumor that she had been killed in a streetcar accident in St. Louis. It then announced that 'the Biograph girl' was Florence Lawrence. She was alive and well and about to star in a new film for IMP. This was likely the first Hollywood publicity stunt.
