Howard Cosell with David Letterman This is the second segment of legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell's 1985 appearance on David Letterman's show. By that time ABC had put Cosell out to pasture. Cosell was on the show to promote his no-holds-barred memoir 'I Never Played The Game.'

Jeremy Gelbwaks - Original Chris Partridge The Partridge Family was an ABC musical sitcom that ran for four seasons from 1970 to 1974. The show's premise was that recently widowed mother Shirley Partridge and her five children decide to form a pop group to make ends meet and earn money for the children's college funds. The show was loosely based on the real family musical group The Cowsills. In the show's first season Chris Partridge, the drummer and youngest son, was played by Jeremy Gelbwaks. (He seldom had more than two lines in an episode. In fact, in the last episode Gelbwaks appeared in, he had no lines whatsoever.) After the 1970-71 season Gelbwaks was replaced in the cast by Brian Forster. The reason why the change was made varies depending upon whom you ask. Gelbwaks' father was a federal government employee whose job forced him to relocate from California to Virginia just as the show's first season was concluding. The move made it difficult for Jeremy to continue his role as Chris Partridge. However, stories persist that Gelbwaks was a hellion on the set and the show's producers wanted to get rid of him. Danny Bonaduce (who played middle son Danny Partridge--and was admittedly no angel himself) once stated in an interview that Gelbwaks was "psychotic." David Cassidy (who played oldest son and teen heartthrob Keith Partridge) apparently couldn't stand Gelbwaks' on-set antics--which included kicking other cast members just before the director called "Action!" Whether Gelbwaks left on his own accord because of his family's out-of-state move or whether he was was forced out of the cast because of his bad behavior remains a matter of conjecture. Perhaps it was a combination of the two. ABC received zero letters of complaint regarding the cast change. Gelbwaks never worked in show business again. According to a fansite, Gelbwaks is married and lives in New Orleans. Gelbwaks appeared on Danny Bonaduce's short-lived syndicated talk show in 1995 when most of The Partridge Family cast gathered for a 25th anniversary reunion. Both Chrises made appearances on that program and there seemed to be no animosity among those who were present. (David Cassidy was unavailable to appear, however.)

Henry Blake Killed On MASH Thirty-nine years ago today (March 18, 1975) one of the most memorable--and shocking--moments in American television was broadcast: In the final episode of the third season of MASH, Lt. Colonel Henry Blake, the commanding officer of the 4077th MASH in Korea, was killed while on his way home. McLean Stevenson had wanted to leave MASH after three seasons, so the show's writers used Stevenson's departure to make a powerful statement: some people go off to war and don't come back. Never before had a sitcom's character's death been so dramatically part of the script. Colonel Blake's death had always been part of the episode's script, but the final page had been hidden from the cast members in order to keep their reactions throughout the rest of the show true to the happy storyline of Blake returning home to his family in Bloomington, IN. Only when all the other scenes had been filmed did director Larry Gelbart inform the cast about the missing scene. This clip shows company clerk Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) interrupting an OR session to deliver the tragic news. After the show aired, CBS was inundated with hundreds of letters from viewers who were outraged that a situation comedy had become a situation tragedy. Every person who wrote a letter got a hand-written reply explaining that MASH wanted to show the cruel realities of war.

George O Leary Resume Scandal In December 2001, the University of Notre Dame hired George O'Leary to be its new head football coach. Five days later O'Leary was fired because of falsehoods on his resume. Portions of O'Leary's resume, which had been made public by the university, claimed that O'Leary had earned a master's degree in education from NYU-Stony Brook University and three football letters from the University of New Hampshire. None of it was true. O'Leary had obtained only two credits from NYU and never graduated. Moreover, NYU-Stony Brook University does not exist. Also, records proved he had never played football at New Hampshire. The inaccuracies came to light when a newspaper reporter from New Hampshire wanted to write a favorable local-angle story about Notre Dame's new coach--and discovered that no one on the New Hampshire football team remembered O'Leary. O'Leary had successfully coached Georgia Tech to a national championship in 1991 and no one had thought to question his resume then.
