A Vintage 1965 Superboy and Krypto Built Model Kit by Aurora Plastics Corp. Aurora Plastics Corporation put out a line of model kits base on D.C. and Marvel Superhero Comic Book Characters. This is the original version kit. Aurora was the leader in producing all plastic figure assembly kits. I stripped off all of the old gloss paint (remember Testor's glossy enamel paint?) and put putty into the seams that I was able to do without losing detail and repainted the kit using acrylic paints. Acrylic paints make the kits look more realistic. This kit shows Superboy and Krypto encasing a dragon into a rock! I had a golden retriever (may she rest in peace) and I named her Krypto.

A Vintage Original Issue Superman Built Up Model Kit by Aurora Plastics Corp. 1964 Superman, "The Man of Steel" busting through a brick wall. Another in a line of Superhero model kits put out by Aurora Plastics Corp. The popularity of figure model kits fizzled with the introduction of G.I. Joe. Now kids could have a figure that moved instead of a motionless model kit. Aurora held its own and still produced kits. I stripped off the old glossy paint and used acrylic paints to make it more lifelike.

Space Age Lodge in Gila Bend Arizona circa 1960s Another of those tacky motels that appeared across America. This one is in Gila Bend, Arizona (pronounced Hee-La) This motel is southwest of Phoenix on the way to Mexico and took its que from the popularity of the space craze in the early sixties. The hotel was shut down for many years and recently renovated and is even tackier. I wasn't aware that it had been renovated until I went looking for pics of it in the 60's. I drove by this area a few years ago and it was abandoned.

The Comedy of Nichols and May This is one of the funniest sketches I've ever seen. It's about as close to the mother-child relationship as you can get. Mike Nichols and Elaine May created perfectly improvised scenes that were outrageously funny, yet simply understated. Their dry wit and wry satire allowed them to lampoon faceless bureaucracy and such previously sacrosanct institutions as hospitals, politics, funeral homes, and even motherhood. Like other great comedy duos, Nichols and May perfectly complemented each other. They seemed so attuned and at ease with each other that the mis-communication they often based their skits on were all the funnier. Within a short while of arriving in New York, they were the talk of the town, appearing on The Steve Allen Show, introducing a nationwide audience to a humor unlike any on television. Nichols and May spent much of the next three years traveling the country performing together on stage, radio, and television. In 1960, "An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May" had opened on Broadway to rave reviews, but by 1961, Nichols and May would announce the end of their partnership. Interested in pursuing individual careers, the two left behind one of the most popular and imitated comedy acts of its time. Mike Nichols has directed and produced a variety of hit films, such as The Graduate, Silkwood, The Birdcage, Primary Colors, and The Remains of the Day. Elaine May is a two-time Academy Award nominated director, screenwriter, and actress.

September Morn Controversy A painting of a nude maiden standing shin deep in a lake created a major scandal in America in 1913. Matinee de Septembre (September Morn) was painted by French artist Paul Emile Chabas over three summers, ending in 1912. The next year, when it was in the window of a Chicago art gallery, a complaint was issued to the mayor's office and the owner of the gallery was subsequently charged with indecency. He beat the rap. Two months later a similar controversy erupted in New York City when the painting was displayed by another art dealer. Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed crusader against vice, vowed to file obscenity charges against the man but never followed through. The surrounding publicity naturally made September Morn the most sought after piece of art in America. Thousands of lithograph reproductions were made in the next decade. The painting is often denounced as kitsch by art critics who claim it lacks contrast, co-ordinated lines, and a worthy subject. Today the original painting is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

BETTY GRABLE SHOWER OF STARS 1954 This wonderful Musical Variety aired live once per month in the time period normally occupied by the dramatic anthology series Climax! Both were sponsored by the Chrysler Corporation and shared the same host, Mr. William Lundigan. There were occasional plays and lots of music and skits. The most familiar face on the Shower of Stars was Jack Benny who appeared in several shows. Grable appeared in the Premiere Episode. . .
