Canadas Most Famous Photo Here's a good question for this website's regulars: What's the most famous photograph in American history? Is it the flag-raising at Iwo Jima? Is it the VJ Day kiss in New York City. Is it Lee Harvey Oswald getting shot? How about the grieving girl at Kent State? There are probably a dozen photos that merit consideration. In Canada we have no such debate. This is it: Frank Orr's photo of Paul Henderson celebrating his series wining goal in Moscow in 1972. Orr got rich from its countless reprints.

Sailor in iconic photo passes at age 86 Glenn Edward McDuffie-He's the sailor in Alfred Eisenstaedt's iconic Life magazine photo grabbing and kissing a nurse in the middle of Times Square after finding out World War II was over. McDuffie died on March 9, but news of his death was reported Friday. He was positively identified as the sailor in the photo in 2007 after many men claimed it was them. According to his obituary, McDuffie joined the Navy in 1942 when he was 15 years old. The obituary said he found a friend to forge his mother's signature, saying he was old enough to serve. On August 14, 1945, McDuffie was part of Eisenstaedt's legendary photo.

Hal Block WML Outcast Hal Block was a regular panelist on What's My Line? from 1950 to 1953. He started his career as a joke writer in Chicago and once toured overseas with Bob Hope. He was not well liked by the other WML panelists because of his lack of dignity. Years later Bennett Cerf referred to Block as 'a clod.' WML producer Gil Fates recalled, 'Hal was a strange man. He was rumored to have come from a very wealthy family in Chicago, where he wrote material for some of the standout, stand-up comics in the business. He was stocky with curly black hair, heavy lips, and rather bulging eyes. He wore bow ties, stood around with his hands clasped behind his back, and smiled most of the time. He seemed completely uninhibited by either sensitivity or propriety. He referred to Ethel Barrymore as 'you doll' and planted big wet kisses on both Sister Kenny and Helen Hayes as they passed down the panel to say goodbye. For our deodorant sponsor he gratuitously coined the phrase, 'Make your armpit a charmpit.' Hal was totally oblivious to the panel's distaste for his jokes or to the icy correctness with which John Daly would greet one of his appalling observations. 'You're the prettiest nun I ever saw,' he once complimented a Dominican Sister in full habit. 'So what was so wrong?' he asked in defense. 'She was a real doll.' You couldn't teach the meaning of good taste to Hal any more than StarKist could teach it to Charlie the Tuna. Hal's relationship to the show was much like that of the small-town, stay-at-home wife to her rising young corporate executive husband. Hal had served his purpose when the program was young, but now that we were a class product his gaucheries were no longer tolerable.' In March 1953 Block was quietly replaced on the WML panel by the much more urbane Steve Allen. Block died, pretty much forgotten, from injuries he suffered in an apartment fire, in 1981 at age 67.

Our Gang - Dickie Moore Dickie Moore was an Our Gang regular in 1932 and 1933, becoming one of the troupe's lead male characters. Dickie was a clean-cut, likable boy who often played the 'straight man' parts against more comical characters. In addition to his Our Gang work, Moore is often remembered for his portrayal of the title character in the 1933 adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and as Marlene Dietrich's son in Blonde Venus (1932). He is also famous for giving Shirley Temple her first onscreen kiss, in Miss Annie Rooney (1942). With dozens of news cameras present to record the 'end-of-innocence kiss,' Moore has described the incident as the most terrifying of his life. (It was the first time in his 17 years that he had kissed any girl!) Moore was less successful as a teenage and young-adult actor, and retired from the screen in the early 1950s. Moore went on to teach and write books about acting, edit Equity magazine, perform on Broadway, in stock, and on television. He also wrote and directed for TV, produced an Oscar-nominated short film (The Boy and the Eagle), and produced industrial films. Moore, who married actress Jane Powell in 1988, passed away on September 10, 2015--just two days before his ninetieth birthday.
