Misfits of Science Misfits of Science was a short-lived NBC science fiction program. Only 15 episodes were made for the 1985-86 season--and just 14 aired--before it was cancelled due to low ratings. Misfits of Science featured young adults with unusual powers who were melded into a crime fighting unit. Among them was Dean Paul Martin (Dean Martin's son). He played Dr. Billy Hayes who organized the unit. Kevin Peter Hall, who was anywhere from 7'2" to 7'4" tall, played Dr. Elvin Lincoln who had the ability to shrink himself to a height of just six inches. A young Courteney Cox played juvenile delinquent Gloria Dinallo who possessed telekinetic powers. Here is the show's very strange opening montage.

Baseball Fan Killed By Stray Bullet - 1950 On Tuesday, July 4, 1950, while awaiting the start of a Brooklyn Dodgers-New York Giants holiday doubleheader at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan, 53-year-old Barney Doyle was killed from a bullet to the head. Doyle, a passionate Giants fan from New Jersey, had come to the sold-out event with his 13-year-old neighbor, Otto Flaig, who had been eagerly awaiting the trip to the Polo Grounds for weeks. Just as the teams entered the field, Doyle turned to speak to his youthful companion and then suddenly slumped over. Fans seated nearby thought Doyle had merely fainted, but quickly realized the situation was far more serious when they saw blood pouring from a severe head wound. Police later discovered that a 14-year-old boy, Robert Peebles, at a nearby housing project on Coogan's Bluff had fired the shot indiscriminately over a five-foot parapet to celebrate the Fourth of July. He had found the .45-caliber gun in Central Park. Newspapers also reported that fans who had bought standing-room passes for the sold-out doubleheader callously fought over Doyle's vacated seat. Because of his age, Peebles shockingly could only receive a juvenile delinquency charge. Doyle had recently been forced to retire from his job due to health concerns; attending ballgames had become one of the few outings he was permitted to do. The photo below ran in the next day's New York Daily News. (If anybody cares, the Giants and Dodgers split that day's doubleheader.)

The Rover Boys - Book Series The Rover Boys, or The Rover Boys Series for Young Americans, was a popular juvenile literature series authored by Arthur M. Winfield, a pseudonym for Edward Stratemeyer. Thirty titles were first published between 1899 and 1926. The original Rover Boys were brothers Tom, Sam, and Dick Rover. Their children (Fred, son of Sam Rover; Jack, son of Dick; Andy and Randy, twin sons of Tom) became the main characters of the shorter "second series" that began with Volume 21, The Rover Boys at Colby Hall, published in 1917. The elder Rovers continued making appearances in the second series. The Rovers were students at a military boarding school. They were adventurous, prank-playing, flirtatious, and often unchaperoned adolescents who were frequently causing mischief for authorities as well as criminals. The series often incorporated novel technology of the era, such as the automobile, airplanes (The Rover Boys in the Air) and news events, such as World War I. Although the last installment of the series was published in 1926, the whole Rover Boys series stayed in print for years afterward.
