Love American Style - The Elopement Love American Style was a light-hearted program that aired on ABC from 1969 to 1974. It was usually comprised of three unrelated segments that involved some sort of romantic entanglement. The show had no ongoing cast; familiar actors from other TV shows normally played the lead roles. The show's main segments were separated with 'blackouts'--short, comedic vignettes. Love American Style was considered somewhat risque for its time because of its bedroom humor. Here's a good example: Davy Jones and Karen Valentine star in this 10-minute clip from 1970 about an elopement that goes wrong when the groom-to-be enters the wrong girl's window. It is preceded by a 'blackout' that would have raised a few eyebrows in 1970. (Try to ignore the logo that appears in the middle of the screen.)

Jenny Jones Talk Show Guest Driven to Murder On March 6, 1995, Jenny Jones, the hostess of a TV talk show that bore her name, attempted to shock one her guests. The talk show had debuted in 1991 but had failed to deliver significant ratings until its subject matter became more sleazy starting in 1993. Jones' plan that day was to have a homosexual Michigan man named Scott Amedure admit to having a crush on his neighbor Jonathan Schmitz. Schmitz, a heterosexual, agreed to appear on the program because he had been led to believe that his secret admirer was a female. Unbeknownst to the show's staff, Schmitz had a history of mental illness, so Amedure's revelation weighed negatively on his mind. The media at the time gave a woefully incomplete account of what happened. It portrayed Schmitz as someone who became violent almost immediately. However this clip from the show--which never aired--shows that Schmitz accepted the news as gracefully as could be expected given the circumstances. Only after he received a sexually charged letter from Amedure after taping the show did Schmitz snap. He took some money from his savings account, purchased a shotgun, and fatally wounded Amedure in the latter's mobile home. Schmitz called police shortly thereafter to report what he had done. Schmitz was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to between 25 and 50 years in prison. A successful appeal resulted in a retrial--where Schmitz was again found guilty and the prison term was reinstated. Amedure's family won a $25 million lawsuit against The Jenny Jones Show. That decision was later overturned on appeal. The Jenny Jones Show ended in 2003.

Love on a Rooftop - Failed Sitcom Judy Carne and Peter Deuel (a.k.a. Peter Duel) starred in Love on a Rooftop, an ABC sitcom that had potential but was not renewed beyond its premier 1966-67 season. This is the opening sequence. The plot revolved around a newlywed couple, Dave and Julie Willis, and their humorous struggles to survive in San Francisco on Dave's meager weekly salary of $85.37 he earned as an apprentice architect. Matters were complicated by the fact that Julie came from a well-to-do family. Her father did not approve of their less than luxurious lifestyle and often took it upon himself to try to improve it--causing friction with Dave. Rich Little appeared as neighbor Stan Parker. The show began its 30-episode run on Tuesday nights but switched to Thursday in January 1967. It drew better ratings than another new sitcom, That Girl, that followed it on ABC's Thursday lineup. Strangely That Girl was renewed and ended up having a solid five-year network run while Love on a Rooftop pretty much entered sitcom oblivion. ABC aired reruns during the summer of 1971 partly to promote Peter Duel's new light-hearted western show Alias Smith and Jones. Duel committed suicide on December 31, 1971. He was 31 years old.
