GI Joe going PC The show biz newspaper Variety reports: "G.I. Joe is now a Brussels-based outfit that stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, an international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organization headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer." Red Barn Commercial 1971 Red Barn was a hugely popular hamburger restaurant in my hometown in the early 1970s. (I used to get a free burger coupon in the mail around my birthday!) Red Barn was a chain of burger joints that had locations in 19 states and Canada. The facades of their restaurants were designed to look like barns. This is a 1971 commercial advertising the Barnbuster burger. The main character, Hamburger Hungry, looked too much like Ernie from Sesame Street and had to be redesigned not long after this commercial aired to avoid copyright troubles.

Stanley Cup The coolest trophy in sports is the Stanley Cup. The Cup was originally the silver bowl that is atop the present trophy. It was purchased for about $50 by Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor-General of Canada, and was intended to be awarded annually to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. It was first presented in 1893 to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association club. Professional teams were openly allowed to compete for it starting in 1909. The National Hockey League took permanent possession of it in 1926. Over the years it's had its share of adventures and misadventures: The Stanley Cup has been used as a flower pot, dropkicked into Ottawa's Rideau Canal, left on a Montreal street corner, and used as an exotic dancer's prop in a New York City strip joint.

The Empire Strikes Back TV trailer 1980 A rare instance of a sequel being as good as or perhaps even better than the original film, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) was the second of the original STAR WARS movies and benefited both from the direction of Irvin Kershner and a screenplay jointly written by Lawrence Kasdan, George Lucas and Leigh Brackett (who wrote such classics as THE BIG SLEEP and RIO BRAVO).

Controversial Tombstone This grave marker is considered so outrageous that Find-A-Grave won't allow in on their website. It is atop the final resting place of fifty-five-year-old John McCaffery who died in 1995 and was interred in a Montreal cemetery. His tombstone was jointly commissioned by his ex-wife and his mistress. (That's quite a combination!) Can you spot their subtle insult?

Cheers - Frederick Speaks My favorite Cheers moment: In a memorable ninth-season episode, Frasier and Lillith are concerned that their 11-month-old son Frederick hasn't yet spoken his first word. They jointly agree that their toddler needs proper intellectual stimulation--but Frasier takes him to the bar anyway. When Lillith discovers Frasier and Frederick at Cheers, Frederick dramatically says his first word!
