And Away We Go Surprising as it may be, 'The Great One' made only one appearance on The Tonight Show, this was in 1985. A six-pack a day smoker for years, he battled colon cancer, liver cancer and thrombosed hemorrhoids even while he worked. He was hospitalized at one point in 1986-87, but checked himself out and died quietly at the age of 71 at his Inverrary, Florida home on June 24th 1987.

Jackie Gleason Game Show Flop On January 20, 1961 a game show called You're In The Picture, hosted by Jackie Gleason, debuted on CBS. It was a disaster and the TV critics savaged it. The next week, instead of hosting the game show, Gleason appeared on the air to apologize for 'the bomb.' This time the critics loved Gleason's candor and praised him! This clip shows about a minute of Gleason explaining the game show's rules on January 20 and about eight minutes of his apology from January 27.

Moses Walker Predated Jackie Robinson Everybody knows that Jackie Robinson was the first black major league baseball player, right? Wrong--by 63 years! Moses Fleetwood (Fleet) Walker, a barehanded catcher, played 42 games for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association way back in 1884 when the AA was a major league. Walker's presence on the team created considerable controversy. Walker was subjected to death threats and snubbed by his own teammates. His brother Welday joined the team for a while too, appearing in five games as an outfielder. However, with owners, players and fans all showing open hostility toward blacks, the major league moguls made a 'gentleman's agreement' not to sign any more black players after 1884. This tacit pact stood until Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers on opening day 1947.

Gale Storm- Early TV star dies ale Storm, whose wholesome appearance and perky personality made her one of early television's biggest stars on "My Little Margie" and "The Gale Storm Show," has died. She was 87. Storm, who had been in failing health in recent years, died Saturday at a convalescent hospital in Danville, said her son, Peter Bonnell. Before landing the starring role in "My Little Margie" in 1952, Storm starred in numerous B movies opposite such stars as Roy Rogers, Eddie Albert and Jackie Cooper. After her last TV series, "The Gale Storm Show," ended in 1960, she went on to a successful singing career while continuing to make occasional TV appearances.

Jackie Gleason on Whats My Line Jackie Gleason was the mystery challenger on the March 8, 1953 edition of What's My Line. Amazingly, he has the panel stumped for quite a long time. I guess he wasn't yet the showbiz legend in 1953 that he later became.
