Jim Joyce Blown Call Incident It was one of the strangest feel-good stories in sports history: On Wednesday, June 2, 2010, Detroit Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga was one out from pitching a rare perfect game. Cleveland Indians' batter Jason Donald hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield. First baseman Miguel Cabrera moved toward second base to field the ball. Galarraga ran from the pitcher's mound to cover first base. Cabrera's throw to Galarraga beat Donald to the bag by about three-quarters of a step--but Jim Joyce, a highly regarded 22-year MLB veteran umpire, incorrectly ruled Donald safe. Galarraga retired the next Indians' hitter for a 3-0 shutout win, but Joyce came under immediate fire for missing the call that cost Galarraga a perfect game. Death threats were sent to his family members in Oregon. MLB Security provided extra protection to Joyce and his umpiring crew. However, Joyce did a remarkable thing: he publicly and candidly acknowledged his error and tearfully apologized to Galarraga in the umpires' room. Galarraga handled the situation incredibly well, telling Joyce that "we're all human." The next afternoon, Joyce was working home plate. Tigers' manager Jim Leyland sent Galarraga to the plate to present the lineup card to a teary-eyed Joyce (see photo). The crowd loudly cheered both Joyce and Galarraga. The dynamics of the situation completely changed: Joyce was then widely hailed as a hero for owning up to his mistake. He received hundreds of letters and emails of support from people from all walks of life. When Joyce's umpiring crew arrived in Philadelphia for their next series, they were applauded at the airport.

Taiwan Dominates 1973 LLWS The 1973 Little League World Series featured total domination by the team from Tainan City, Taiwan. In their three games not only did the Taiwanese team record three shutouts (18-0, 27-0, and 12-0), they did not even surrender a hit to their hopelessly outclassed opponents. Because there was no mercy rule in LLWS play at the time, in their final two games the Taiwanese players deliberately bunted into outs when victory was assured. Ed Vosberg, who became a much-travelled MLB pitcher (nine teams in 10 seasons), played first base for the Tucson, AZ team that lost to Tainan City in the finals. Vosberg had pitched a one-hitter in his team's semifinal victory versus Birmingham, MI. The dominance of the Tainan City team was so thorough it compelled the Taiwanese ambassador in Washington to issue the following apology: "I am sorry we were so good."

Isner-Mahut Wimbledon Marathon A first-round men's singles match at the 2010 Wimbledon tourney between American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut was, in many respects, the greatest tennis match ever contested. It is the longest match in tennis history, measured both by time and number of games. The extraordinary match, contested over three days, lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes with Isner eventually prevailing 64, 36, 67(79), 76(73), 7068 for a total of 183 games. The match began at 6:13 pm on Tuesday, June 22. At 9:07 pm, due to fading light, play was suspended at two sets all. After resuming on Wednesday, at 2:05 pm, the record for longest match was broken at 5:45 pm. The light faded again, and so play was suspended at 9:10 pm, with the final set tied at 59 games all. Play resumed at 3:43 pm on Thursday. Isner won at 4:48 pm, the final set having lasted 8 hours, 11 minutes. Both players broke numerous Wimbledon and tennis records, including each serving over 100 aces, with the match being referred to as "the endless match." Twice the score of the final set exceeded the scoreboard's ability to record it. (A computer technician was called in to address the problem both times.) Of course such a lengthy match is only possible at events such as Wimbledon where no tiebreaker is played in the final set.

Cincinnati Reds Comeback - 1972 NLCS The ballgame isn't over until the last man is out! That adage proved to be very true in the fifth and deciding game of the 1972 National League Championship Series. The Pittsburgh Pirates, the defending World Series champs from 1971, led the hometown Cincinnati Reds 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Reliever Dave Giusti entered the game to shut down the Reds. As this brief clip shows, the Reds would not be denied. Johnny Bench tied the game with a leadoff home run. Tony Perez singled and was replaced by pinch-runner George Foster. Another single by Denis Menke advanced Foster to second base and drove Giusti from the mound. He was replaced by Bob Moose. Cesar Geronimo flied out to Roberto Clemente in right field, which advanced Foster to third base. Darrel Chaney popped out. Hal McRae, pinch-hitting for Reds' pitcher Clay Carroll, stepped into the batter's box. Moose uncorked a wild pitch. Foster scored and the Reds were on their way to the World Series. Nobody knew it at the time, but Roberto Clemente had played his last game. He died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve. Bob Moose met an untimely end too: He died in a car crash on his 29th birthday in 1976. By the way, do you recognize the radio announcer? It is Al Michaels.

Jean Harlow 1911-1937 Jean Harlow was one of Hollywood's most popular actresses when she died of renal failure at the age of 26. Plagued with ailments throughout her short life, Harlow was in the midst of shooting scenes with co-star Clark Gable for the film Saratoga on May 29, 1937 when she was taken ill. (Ironically she was playing a scene in which she was supposed to be ill with a fever.) Between scenes she told Gable that she was not feeling well and asked to be taken to her dressing room. It was thought she just had the flu, and the shooting schedule would be delayed only a day or two, but when Harlow's condition worsened, doctors knew Harlow was in far worse shape than initially thought. Kidney failure was a death sentence in 1937. When Harlow succumbed on June 7 filmgoers were shocked. MGM shut down for the day of Harlow's funeral. She was interred in her crypt wearing a dress she had worn in the film Libeled Lady. Saratoga was finished using long-range and short-range doubles for Harlow's scenes and was a surprising box office hit. Even today scholarly audiences watch Saratoga to see if they can tell which scenes are truly Harlow's and which are the doubles'.
