Whitney Houston Live I Will Always Love You An awesome performance of "I Will Always Love You", (from the 1992 film The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner) at Divas 1999. Whitney Houston was one of a few black artists to receive heavy rotation on MTV in the 1980's during a male rock dominated time, in the network's early years. AOL Black Voices said "Though her success seemed like a lightening rod, it was always validated by Whitney's polished and powerful vocal abilities - making her known as "The Voice". After marrying R&B singer Bobby Brown at the height of her career, rumors of drug and spousal abuse led to a decline in her album sales and her public image. Her personal troubles were talked about more than any of her music, and she regularly appeared in the tabloid press. Houston began looking and sounding less like the singer people came to know and she stopped making public appearances. She underwent two drug rehab programs in 2005 and 2006. After a successful second program in 2006, she divorced Bobby Brown and gained custody of their daughter, Bobbi Kristina. She has since been working on her 7th studio album with music mogul and close friend and mentor Clive Davis.

Another Blast From The Past PJ PROBY PJ Proby was born James Marcus Smith in Houston TX, 11/06/38. I don't know what show this was from, but "Hold Me" was a big hit for Proby in 1964. There's a story about him that goes something like this: PJ was known for his exhausting visional stage performances. It was one of these performances on January 29, 1965, at Fairfield Hall, Croydon in London that Proby, who was the first male ever to wear his hair in a pony tail in the last century at least, burst out of his skin tight velvet bell-bottoms doing his act, based on the black shows he had been used to attending in the rougher areas of Downtown LA. He explained to the frantic press that the ripped clothing was an accident due to the weak velvet material, but when two days later the same thing again happened, the audiences were wild with excitement, as they had never witnessed such body movement onstage or such provocative mood and they loved him. However, the British system that governs the music scene was less enthusiastic. PJ was banned from all theaters in Great Britain and not allowed to perform his recordings on the B.B.C. or A.T.V. television stations. By February 24th, Proby was unable to perform almost anywhere although he was headline news in every newspaper.

Whiz Kids Whiz Kids was a television series which aired from 5 October 1983 to 2 June 1984 in the United States. The show was about the adventures of a group of teenagers who worked as amateur computer experts and detectives. The show was basically a copy of ideas from WarGames, toned down and expanded for TV. The series starred Max Gail as the group's mentor. The cast also included Matthew Laborteaux as Richie Adler, Dan O'Herlihy, Todd Porter as Hamilton Parker and Andrea Elson as Alice. Richie Adler lived with his mother and sister - his father worked away from home. Periodically, Richie's father would send him obsolete pieces of electronic and computer equipment including in one episode, a programmable robot called Herman. Richie collected these pieces of equipment from his father and connected them together to form "RALF" - his pet name for his computer system which included, in one episode, a primitive webcam. The show was based on Richie and his friends coming across mysteries which they (mainly Richie) would attempt to solve using his computer skills with RALF's power. Guidance was provided by Farley (their mentor). The series aired on CBS. Initially, it aired Wednesday nights, but it began airing Saturday nights on 7 January 1984, replacing Cutter to Houston.

Howard Cosell Final Boxing Broadcast Here are the final two rounds of Larry Holmes' one-sided heavyweight title defense against Randall (Tex) Cobb in Houston in 1982. The fight was notorious for Howard Cosell's negative, anti-boxing commentary. Cosell never worked another bout.

Marriage Proposal Rejected At Basketball Game I've been waiting for this to happen at one of these public marriage proposals: At a February 13, 2008 basketball game, a Houston Rockets fan asks his girlfriend to marry him--and she says no! (On the bright side, the Rockets did beat the Sacramento Kings 89-87 that night. I'm sure that cheered up the poor fellow!)

1978 AFC Championship Game Here's a treat for you NFL fans: the first 10 minutes of NBC's broadcast of the 1978 AFC Championship game between the visiting Houston Oilers and host Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was played on January 7, 1979 in miserable conditions at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium. Cold rain, huge puddles, and partially frozen artificial turf made this contest difficult for both teams. The Steelers won the game 34-5 and then beat Dallas 35-31 in Super Bowl XIII two weeks later.
