Ripleys Believe It Or Not Ripley's Believe It Or Not was a regular feature in newspapers for many decades. Its creator, Robert Ripley, hoped to be a professional baseball player but an arm injury ended that dream. Instead, Ripley decided to write about sports. He compiled some odd sports facts and presented them in cartoon form. Ripley intended to call it Champs & Chumps, but settled on Believe It Or Not so he could go beyond sports. His first cartoon panel premiered in the New York Globe on December 19, 1918. At one point, there were 80 million loyal readers of Believe It Or Not in daily newspapers. Much of Ripley's research was done by Norbert Pearlroth. For 52 years, Pearlroth spent 10 hours per day, six days a week in the New York Public Library searching for obscure facts and trivia for Ripley's cartoons!

Bob Hope Classic Line Here's a clip of Bob Hope in the movie "The Ghost Breakers," where he says what is considered to be one of his funniest lines ever. Politically sensitive folk beware; he knocks democrats. Keep in mind, however, that politically parties represented an entirely different set of beliefs in the 1940s. That said, it is interesting to see a movie from 1940 crack a joke about democrats when it is more commonplace in today's films to see the same jokes said about republicans.

Jack Johnson World Heavyweight Champion The first black boxer to hold the world heavyweight title was Jack Johnson of Galveston, Texas. Johnson held the crown from 1908 through 1915. A superb defensive fighter, he would sometimes go through several rounds without his opponent landing a meaningful punch. When he beat Canada's Tommy Burns for the title in Australia in 1908, correspondent Jack London wrote, 'Not one second of any round could legitimately be scored for Burns.' Johnson so outclassed his opposition that his title reign inspired the Great White Hope movement in America to find someone with the proper pigmentation to beat him. Nat Fleischer, who edited The Ring magazine from 1922 through 1972, rated Johnson as the greatest heavyweight ever.

High Hopes From the movie 'Hole In The Head' 1959 and recorded as a single in 1961 this is a song I still get that chill of enjoyment from. I thought about this as a fitting memory to post on the anniversary of Franks passing. Doesn't seem like ten years.
