Columbo - I really love my work sir You know, sir, it's a funny thing. All my life I kept running into smart people. I don't mean smart like you or the rest of the people in this house. You know what I mean. In school, there were a lot of smarter kids. And when I first joined the force, they had some very clever people there. And I could tell right away that it wouldn't be easy to make detective as long as they were around. But I figured, if I worked harder than they did, put in more time, read the books, kept my eyes open, maybe I could make it happen. And I did. And I really love my work, sir.

Bloody Wednesday "Overshadowing September 11, 2001, another September day 139 years earlier remains the bloodiest single day in American history. On September 17, 1862, there were more than twice the number of fatalities that were suffered in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon . The number of casualties at Antietam was four times greater than American casualties at Normandy. more American soldiers died at Sharspburg (The Confederate name for the battle) than died in combat in all the other wars fought by this country in the nineteenth century combined:" James McPherson, historian This day has come to be remembered as Bloody Wednesday Bloody Wednesday Sharpsburg - September 17, 1862 Photos .. The Cloth Inferno Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire It was the worst factory fire in the history of New York City occurred on March 25, 1911, in the Asch building, where the Triangle Shirtwaist Company occupied the top three of ten floors. Five hundred women, mostly Jewish immigrants between thirteen and twenty-three years old, were employed there. The owners had locked the doors leading to the exits to keep the women at their sewing machines. In less than fifteen minutes, 146 women died. The event galvanized support for additional efforts to be made to increase safety in the workplace. It also garnered support for labor unions in the garment district, and in particular for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. Much material was provided by several websites, among them are; Photos: Brown Brothers Franklin D.Roosevelt Library Corbis Bettmann The Kheel Center, Catherwood Library, ILR School at Cornell University. Authentic History Center Shorpy.com The Office Museum The Library of COngress Audio National Public Radio Authentic History Center The Kheel Center, Catherwood Library, ILR School at Cornell University However, two of the above mentioned in particular, I want to call attention, the first for an overall exceptionally presented look back at this tragedy and a stunning presentation of the labor movement. Truly a brilliant multi-media presentation. The Triangle Factory Fire -- Presented by The Kheel Center, Catherwood Library, ILR School at Cornell University. http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/trianglefire/ and National Public Radio ... http://www.npr.org/templates/story/st... I can not recommend those two sites too highly. They are top notch.

In Their Own Words In Their Own Words .. Remembering the Forgotten Theater of World War II The China - Burma - India Theater Throughout the history of the world, in times of peril and aggression, nations have called upon their military forces for defense against their enemies. Our country has been very fortunate for, whenever the men and women who comprise our Army, Navy, air forces and other services have been called upon; they have served their country bravely and faithfully, regardless of where they were sent or what they were asked to do. Many Americans remember their dedicated service and are appreciative of their performances, but, too soon after the danger is over, the services of these veterans fade into oblivion. 1st Lt. Chepstow Caer Cymru If there is a castle that comes close to matching Harlech Castle in historical importance, that castle is surely Chepstow. Chepstow is a Norman castle perched high above the banks of the river Wye in southeast Wales. Construction began at Chepstow in 1067, less than a year after William the Conqueror was crowned King of England. It was his master castle builder in the person of his loyal Norman lord William FitzOsbern. FitzOsbern's fortresses were the vehicles from which the new king consolidated control of his newly conquered lands. Chepstow Castle became the key launching point for expeditions into Wales, expeditions that eventually subdued the rebellious population. Teach Your Children Well Before we called them - "Buddy" or "Pal" ... They were our children. In hard times or good times - they were at our side. We talked with them, listened to radio together, we read to them, laughed with them, played and worked with them. Today, we teach our "Buddies" and "Pals" to work hard, to get a good job ... so you can buy good things on credit - I wonder what our father's father was taught by his parents???? The Weather Underground- Warning Strong Language In 1969, a small group of college students announced their intentions to overthrow the U.S. government in opposition to the Vietnam War. This documentary explores the rise and fall of this radical movement as former members speak candidly about the passion that drove them at the time. The film also explores the group in the context of other social movements of the time, featuring interviews with former members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Black Panther Party. The documentary also examines the U.S. government's suppression of dissent during this turbulent era. Using archival footage from the 1960s and 1970s, the film also intersperses recent interviews with high profile ex-Weathermen like Bernardine Dohrn, David Gilbert, Bill Ayers, Mark Rudd and Brian Flanagan, who talk about their involvement in the organization, their experiences, and the trajectory that led them to be placed on the FBI's Most Wanted list.
